Picked up three 55 gallons barrels of Trix cereal, "Trix are for kids, silly bears!" :) One 55 gallon drum of assorted cookies and 12 pails of buttercream frosting. Going to get my baits out next weekend. I did not run a bait last year due to the bad knees. Knees are worse this year, but the wife is going to help me and one of my baits is on private property and I will be able to ride the ATV right up to the barrel. Looks like my Daughter may come up and hunt with me in May and try and get her first bear.
-
Feast fit for any bear, that's for sure. Good luck this year, hope your daughter gets a nice one.
-
I must be part bear.
Cause I want to eat out of your barrel. :chuckle:
-
Glad you are getting out this year. I will be following along
-
Following along, hope it "bears" fruit for you!
-
Health complications and injuries are never fun and definitely a hardship. Try to make the best of it and keep pushing forward. Modifying how you have to do things to still enjoy some time outdoors. Will follow along and can’t wait to hear how your adventures go. Good luck
-
Get at it Fred !! I know your knees are needing rebuilt but with some extra hands I hope the season is a good one !!!

Orange Frosting and cookies
-
Trix cereal

With no Spring Bear season here this year we will all be living vicariously through you. Good luck to both you and your daughter!

Got my first bait out last night. New location, so I don't expect much, if any, activity for a bit. Going to get bait #2 out tonight and bait #3 out Friday after work.
-
Can’t wait for more stories from your season! Gawd, I miss baiting! Used to run 50 or more every year in the Okanogan back in 80’s and 90’s! So much fun!!
-
Ill be up there a few times this spring, if you need a hand filling barrels let me know. I can zip over in SXS in 15 min from house

Make us proud, Fred.

Went last night to put in my second bait, but thwarted by the snow.

Sounds like you need to get the wife some snow shoes.

They do tend to get an attitude after a few years.

Best of luck!

This warm weather should melt that out pretty fast

Had a lion walk past my barrel Saturday morning.

Good that you got some private to run baits! I probably need to do that eventually. Hope you have a great season

Well that sucked, went in to my favorite spot to bait yesterday and someone is already baiting there. Heck they put their bear baiting tag on my ladderstand and screwed their trail camera onto my trail camera mount.

At times some people are amazing, talk about not having respect for other hunters! :yike:

So was able to make contact with the guy who put his bear baiting tag on my treestand. Super nice guy who got some misinformation. He was told by a buddy that the site had been abandoned a few years ago. He's working on getting his 15 year old Son a bear. I told him the site was his and I'd be happy to help him keep the bait full since I live pretty close by. Once his boy kills a bear then he and I can coordinate on who hunts the bait site on any given night. I'm meeting him up there today to top up the bait and put a cellular trail camera out. Should be fun!!

Way to turn it into a positive

Bears are hitting one of my baits. Gotta go back in and adjust the camera angle. But at least three bears hitting it. I'll post some photos tonight. One pretty little color phase bear and one decent sized coal black.

Nice

That warm spell really brought them out, good luck!

I'm waiting with
bated baited breath for photos.
-
Going over tomorrow to fix the camera position.
-
Bait #2 in.
-
Got the camera position fixed. Same bear, finally spending so time at the bait barrel.
-
Bait #2 got hammered sometime in the last three nights. But the sucker snapped off my metal trail camera mount and chewed up my trail camera. He also broke off the limb I had my three bear bating tags, but luckily they were still at the base of the tree. Got the barrel re-stocked, but no photos of the culprit yet.
-
Busted and chewed up trail camera and the barrel re-stocked.

Good luck Machias...
-
Lots of bears out and about now. We have a few that are tanks.... :bash: :bash: and now we have to wait till the fall. Good luck...hope you whack a big one.
-
Good luck!
-
Calves are not on the ground yet, get'er done, thanks
-
One of the big boys showed up last night. I'll post a couple photos this evening.
-
Can't wait for the pics!! Way to post them up so we can live through you.
Do you get alot of color phase bears in your area or are they mainly black?
-
Quite a few color phased bears in this area.
Nice big boy showed up.
-
Little red cinnamon also showed up.
-
Boy, what a beautiful sow that showed up tonight with a couple of cubs.
-
Young bear
-
Three little cubs!!
-
I have one bait getting hammered, empty every couple of days. Having trail camera issues, so no good photos. But tonight, he was so close I could smell him, it was overpowering!! Pretty sure he was watching me.
-
Pretty cool feeling!
Bears have such a distinctively sour smell

Getsum Fred !!

Hey Fred, how is the hunt going? Finding any shooters on your baits?

So my season in Unit 5 is over. Pretty dismal spring season, but still had some fun. I never actually hunted a single day this spring for bear. I had one bait in a brand new location on private property. I have a couple of bears on camera last year. I did not expect much activity, but did expect "some" activity. The bait was never touched. Second spot had all kinds of camera trouble, but what I was getting was no daytime activity at all expect one small rubbed bear. One decent sized bear coming in at night. This bait is a looong atv ride around to get to it, so I did not hunt it. I was also saving it for when my daughter came to visit, but then she decided not to buy a tag with the slow activity this spring. Last bait was fairly busy, with a total of 7 bears hitting it, that is counting 3 tiny cubs, so really 4 bears. I was sharing this bait with a really nice guy and his son. That turned out to be, not such a good idea for me. I agreed to only hunt it after his son killed his bear and then he and I would coordinate who was hunting which nights. He ended up only taking his son once and they ended up leaving at 7:30 because his son was bored. They had a golden opportunity to kill a really beautiful blonde bear, but they let the bait barrel run empty and then nothing showed for a week. In some ways it's probably good that I did not hunt this stand as I probably would have shot the blonde bear, even though it was not a really big bear. Also I was a bit worried about them hunting the bait. They both have never killed a bear and the big sow with the 3 cubs was occasionally hitting the bait right before dark. However most of the time she would show up and the cubs would not show up for 45 minutes to an hour. I was afraid they would take her. She is a really big sow with a beautiful brown coat. I would venture to say out of 45 days that bait was out this year, bears were on the bait in shooting light 6 times. Had a huge black male in quite a bit, but never once during shooting light. I'll be hunting moose a LOT this fall, so I figure I'll have a pretty good chance of seeing a few bears this fall while out looking for moose. I'll pull my cameras tomorrow, so I should have a few more photos to share soon.

Well, no harvest but that's not why we do this. Sounds like a prerty educational spring all in all!

Kind of a bummer the other guy didn't hardly hunt after you agreed not to hunt. Hope you had fun with it anyway and like Rob said, chalk it up as a learning experience to help in the future. On to the moose
