Title: F150 Engine light ?
Post by: CP on May 03, 2023, 07:22:08 AM
The little check engine icon has popped up on my 2018 F150.  I can't get an appointment for a fix until next week.  Any danger in driving it as is until then?

  :dunno:

Can you take it down and get the code ran?  Most auto parts stores have the ability to run codes.  That would likely help make the decision as to whether or not you should drive it.  My guess is it is find to drive if you are not seeing, hearing or feeling any performance issues.

Probably emissions related, I would either get the code read as mentioned or you can buy a reader from Amazon for $20-30, probably same day delivery.

Does it flash when you step on it?

No it doesn't flash, steady on, no other symptoms.  Maybe its just telling me that my warranty ran out 3 days ago?

That's probably it, lol. You are ok to drive until you can get it in. Be easy on it and don't drive more than you have to. If it does start to flash you need to stop right away.

Thanks, I ordered this one:

Hopefully it will help.

I'd bet it's gonna be a code for a slight emissions leak. My F150. Pops that code often as does a friends. No big deal, easy to erase and  pretty much any auto parts store will.test for free  I got a code reader from Amazon couple years ago. Cheap and handy to have.

If no performance issues it's probably a bad 02 sensor. Usually the hardest one to change. That said with the newer trucks it could literally be anything.

Do you have the truck connected to FordPass?

Super rare for that truck to have a bad oxygen sensor. Not saying it’s not possible. Just saying there are much more common issues that that in that particular truck.

No, I've never heard of FordPass.

Like a loose hose now that you said, I remember getting an alert and checking the code. My friend who is a mechanic told me to check a particular hose. It had come loose.

Evaporative Emissions small/medium/large leak detected. I think the small leak code would be P0456.

Yes, I just checked it last week.  Maybe I didn't get it back in correctly.

Make sure you didn't unplug the MAF sensor that's right next to the filter housing.  :twocents:

I may have had a similar experience......went to my mechanic, he cleared it and said that it might be due to me driving less during covid and just making short trips. Said to get it out on the road, build up some speed and then let it slow down and then goose it. Light never came back on.

There's a TSB to replace the MAP sensor for that code.

Found on the interweb:

Quote
P0096 - Intake Air Temperature Sensor-2 Circuit Range/Performance Bank-1

Description:
This DTC sets when the IAT2 sensor PID does not correlate with the CACT sensor or the IAT sensor PIDs at ignition ON. It also sets if the IAT2 sensor PID exceeds the maximum calibrated temperature threshold while driving.

Possible Causes:
Slow responding IAT2 sensor
Damaged IAT2 sensor

Diagnostic Aids:
The IAT2 sensor is located on top of the intake manifold. Aftermarket heaters that are attached to the engine, transmission or battery may cause DTC P0096 to set in cold weather climates after a 6 h soak period.

This DTC may be accompanied by other DTCs. Check for other DTCs and diagnose those first.

Personally, for that code, I'd clear it and see if it comes back.  From there I'd likely chase the MAP sensor per the TSB.

I did just that.  I cleaned the MAF connector and airbox, changed the air filter and I updated my Synch software.  I cleared the code and, so far, it hasn’t returned.  I didn’t find a smoking gun cause so I have no idea what the problem was.

Oddly enough, it seems to shift more crisply now.  Software update?  I have no clue.  But no more engine light.

Sync has no effect on anything but the radio/screen/etc.  I'm not sure how cleaning the mass air flow sensor is going to fix an intake air temp sensor code. The TSB that related to that code is to replace the MAP sensor. Not the MAF sensor.

Issue: Some 2017-2021 F-150 vehicles equipped with a 2.7L EcoBoost engine may exhibit an illuminated malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) with diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P0096 in the powertrain control module (PCM). This may be due to an issue with the manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor. To correct the condition, follow the Service Procedure to replace the MAP sensor

Thanks,

I’ll change the MAP sensor if it comes back.

Shifting change might be due to resetting the keep alive memory?  I did disconnect the battery.

I used to work with a former Ford software engineer, he had some interesting stories that make me wonder about what’s really going on in there.

Resetting KAM will not cause it to happen, but maybe if you disconnected the battery, it might erase the adaptive shift strategies. 100 miles of driving should get that relearned and back to normal.
