Title: Your Maximum Range Rifle
Post by: dbllunger on November 18, 2007, 01:57:59 PM
Just wondering what everyones self imposed range limitations are.  This would be the nice broad side shot with time and everthing to your advantage.

My max point blank range is 325 yards, i am 2 inches high at 200 with my 300 win mag. I am comfortable to 400...

depends on the circumstances. I can bomb coyote sized game at a grand on a no wind day, good light and known range, from a steady rest with my 6.5-06. I can miss an elephant at 100 paces in a blowing hailstorm. so I guess it depends is my answer.

I don't set a personal limit, I just make field decisions as to weather or not I think I can make the shot.

I shoot a Sako TRGS chambered in Lazzeroni Warbird 7.89 and have practiced ALOT at 500 yds. The rifle has no problem doing it's part. It all boils down to me doing my part. It is imperative that you do alot of range time IMO if you are going to be taking shots in excess of 400yds.

800 yards......holy balls.  I would go as far as 500 if the conditions were right.  I do love training coyotes at 1000 yards with the 25-06. :chuckle:   I personaly want a 50 cal mounted o my garage roof for those 1000 yard shots here in the wenas.  Anyone know how small a deer looks at 800 yards. :)

bone you need a quick twist 6.5mm. they are crazy at range. poke a 142gr SMK somewhere in the 300fps neck of the woods and there is no place a coyote can hide. my 3.5-14 scope is enough to drill a clay piegon at better than a grand....ya oughta give it a whirl.

If I have some time this weekend I am going to take some long range coyotes, by long range I am thinking 4 digits. If the weather coop's I will post some pics.

Come on now, 700-800 yards??? That's half a mile!!! A slight breeze will throw your shot off. Your crosshairs will cover the whole deer!!!

only if you are using a firefly reticle on 4X

300mag...not with a decent quality scope it won't.  I shoot a 4.5-14, a 4-12, and a 6.5-20 on my long range guns.  I can assure you the reticle does not cover up the whole deer at 800yds.  I shoot groundhogs at 600+ with my 7mm STW with a 6.5-20 in the 16-18 range and I can hold and see where I want.  Get a good quality higher power scope and you will be able to easily see what you are shooting at.

High Country, "somewhere in the 300fps neck of the woods and there is no place a coyote can hide."

My Mathews bow will do that all day long and I dont need a scope for it either :chuckle:

I shoot a 270win. . Model 700. If Im shooting cheap rounds, I can pick clays @ 300yrds.  With good rounds I can add about 60-70 more to that.

If I cant see the deer without bino's or the scope, its to far to shoot.  Where's the thrill in a 4-5-600 yrd shot.  Theres no bigger thrill than getting within 75 or less.
