If I drew the tag, is it worth getting excited about? :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
I’ve spent the evening going through the search reading.
-
any tags worth it these days
-
If u don't want it I'll take it....very respectable possibilities with that tag.
-
I've put in for this tag for well over 20 years. My 15yo son drew it this year. I'm glad I get to at least be a part of this hunt. I'm really looking forward to it! Sled, congrats on pulling a quality tag!
-
I was joking. I am very thankful to have the tag
-
Hell ya it is.....some great deer in that unit. Enjoy the big bulls too
-
That’ll be a great hunt

Oh my your gonna have fun with this one. Lots of good bucks last year. Lucky man enjoy
-
Curious on what a good buck is out there ? I live and hunted that unit for 40 years and between the four legged and two legged predator there’s not much left. Not saying a guy can’t shoot a 155-160 buck is not possible but it’s a long way away from a true quality hunt. We had the tag two years ago and hunted almost every day and never saw a buck over 160. Couple of those day I walk from cross over road to the river.

I do wish you all the luck in the world. And it is truly a fun hunt but just not what she use to be.

I too live here and I think 170 is doable. It’s definitely not as good as it was 10 years ago but its cool country.
-
While processing a cow elk in a well known canyon in 2016 we had two really nice mule deer walk past us. Not wall hangers but 140 ish. It I had the tag I would start up top and hike down the canyons.

Been a few years since i've been in there but I was hearing how it had gone down hill back then. I found plenty of really nice bucks. ended up with a 165 point buck. The biggest one i saw would probably have gone 180 if he hadn't been broken up so bad. I'll take this tag any time.
-
Nice buck, dagon!
-
Thats a beauty Dragon. I've told my son to shoot one that he will want to look at the rest of his life. I believe he understands to wait for "the one"...
-
I think you'll find there are more then one that's the one. And even better I don't think I saw another hunter after all the elk hunters left on Sunday. Got mine on Monday opening day.
-
And forgot to mention I got him on top of the ridge just west of the visitor center. Have fun.
-
Dandy buck Dagon!
-
So exciting!
-
I can tell you that it has gone downhill unless it’s rebounded in the last year or so.
-
Who cares if it's gone downhill, there are still some WA studs in there for sure. I'd love the tag.
-
Great buck dagon. What year was that?
-

:yeah: We're all aware that mule deer hunting in WA is nowhere near what it used to be. Everything has gone downhill. No need to continually crap on the excitement of every QD tag holder out there with these comments IMO

I wasn't trying to crap on anyone's enthusiasm, but it isn't bad to have a realistic idea of how to approach the hunt IMO. I was also responding to his original post, as I hadn't read the replies yet. My bad!
I'm sure there are great bucks in there still. I first hunted there in the early 2000s. We killed a buck that scored over 180. Hunted again a few years ago. Hunted all but a couple days and never saw a mature buck. We saw dozens of young bucks with good genetics. I talked to tag holders the last two years, and they never saw a mature deer either. I'm sure the genetics are still there but the old deer are fewer and farther between.
I still put in for the tag. When and if I draw, I'll be far from any road hoping to find a mature buck that escaped the pressure.
-
Great buck dagon. What year was that?
looks like I have 15 points this year sooooo!!! There ya go. Thing is everyone was saying how bad things had gotten back then with hair loss (never saw one with that) and over hunting (don't think so). Anyway I'll take it next year if you guys will all promise to put in for something else. Really it sucks now. lol

is the quilomene a true spike area?

Title says Quilomene Quality Deer, and there were lots of good posts.
I'd love to draw that tag.
I love that country.
-
I drew that tag, I think it was 23 years ago. After I drew I came down with a severe eye disease, too blind to drive but had a lumpy contoured eyeball that gave me better vision spots here and there. If I turned my head to and fro and up and down I could usually find a spot of fairly good vision. I was so messed up I hadn’t planned to hunt but my son talked me into going. He drove and did almost everything and I would hang on to his coattail if we needed to walk much.
We had scouted a LOT, saw LOTS of bucks and never saw a really big buck, though a couple of pretty racks, one a 6x6 maybe 23 inches wide. We saw none that looked as big as Dagon's dandy buck.
I passed ten bucks before shooting one on the second weekend, and I was almost blind. There were a lot of deer. The best we saw during my handicapped season was a bit bigger than average 3x3 on opening morning. We thought that the bigger bucks were off of the top rim down in steep stuff where I simply could not manage the terrain. Another permit hunter we talked with had a nice wide buck, maybe 28 inches or a bit more, but short 2x3 (or 2x4?) tines.
Our friends were sure my son had shot a buck for me but I did the deed, at 208 yards no less. With lots of time and a leaner on a tree… I missed the first shot. The buck raised his head, stepped more into the open and turned broadside, looking around. Dropped him with the second shot. My son said, “That was real sporting of you to give him a warning shot!”
Five surgeries and nearly two years into the disease I got to drive again and got back to 20-20 with glasses. Once I was blind, but now… gives me goose bumps to recall it all. I am fortunate.
-
Great story and good job.

The best thing WDFW ever did for the mule deer here is to make the 3pt or better rule.

So every time I make the trip on I90 passed the Quilomene, I get disgusted seeing all the wind turbines in the beautiful country. I am curious how those turbines have effected the Mule Deer and elk in the area?

Man, I hate those things too. Watch the sun set from my house, and see all the blinking red lights on those dog gone things is disheartening...

Man me too I hate those dang things that pay my salary and provide enough energy for 100 houses when they're running. Such a pain to fix and climb.

When I was hunting and hanging out in that area throughout the years, I saw quality deer in the same spots like it was clockwork. Those spots were in draw tag areas.
I’d be excited if I drew it.

So, in about 2.5 miles in below the fog on the wind farm and so far I’ve only seen some range cattle. March on. Looks like it’s socked in up top.

Be happy you don't have an alkali tag next door. I haven't seen a single buck in 20 miles of hiking and hundreds driving trying to fill a cow tag. They call this the rut?

I saw some just down from the intersection of box canyon and quilomene ridge road on saturday

Thanks they were there on Thursday and the fog screwed us. I know they rode it Friday and Saturday but the fog was so thick. I’m not sure if they got them.

Bet it makes it tough! Do you/they intend on letting them get that low? Or do they get pushed? In 2018 dad had a muzzy bull tag, and we were down brushy working on cutting up his bull when we talked to a couple folks on horses looking for cows that had gotten pushed towards the bar. Always wondered if they found them, and was slightly jealous. Not that it’s all the glory that it seems, but I’d love to spend some time on the back of a horse in that country
-
The range lease covers all that from the river to the top. The weather kind of screwed them this year they usually just split up. Everybody takes a Canyon on a horse and pushes them up over the top of the park creek. Got 18 pair out of brushy on Thursday. One good thing is a cow needs water, so just check the water holes in the springs.

Well, I saw one spike Buck today, about 20 Does, and a bunch of Elk. Several nice bulls to look at. I did see a 3pt in a truck headed out, and maybe someone gutting one at almost dark.
-
Keep at it Sled, you’ll get one.

Fog, rain, then wind were rough Monday. Wind blew about as hard as I've ever seen a sustained wind yesterday morning. Appears that the weather should be good today! I bet Sled gets on some deer after a couple of tough weather days. Hoping the wind may have made the roads less slick. Bucks are with about every group of doe.

Good to hear, my Teanaway tag starts Monday!

Weather sure isn’t helping you, at least maybe it isn’t foggy. Any luck Sled?
-
Bucks are rutting hard. Hopefully today is a good day for you.
-
How’s your hunt going?
-
I’ll give an update tonight. I’ve tried a couple times but it doesn’t post
-
Unfortunately before the season started I lost my job. The third day in I received an email for an interview that I would need to come home for early from the hunt. Go figure an oil tag damn near you plan for all your life and a wrench gets thrown into the works to screw it up. That’s just life. I took a buck I’m more than happy with!
-
Damn. Be a hunt you’ll always remember. Hope all is well with the job hunt
-
Can’t wait to see pics. My last quality buck tag was the same way…..took a new job and had to cut a 10 day hunt in half. Such is life…..hope you still had a good hunt.
-
Congrats on your buck my friend. I like the height of it.

Did I miss the pic of your buck Sled? Once again, congrats, that is a tough way to start out the hunt. Hope you landed the new job!

I agree 100%
whoever came up with the idea for those god awful things should be strapped to one of the blades for the rest of their miserable life.

I see hundreds upon hundreds of elk on both sides of I-90 during most times of the year. And I have helped with I90 elk diversion fences along that section. I don't think the elk are bothered by the wind farm, at all. I-90 seems to be the biggest barrier to their safety as there are elk carcasses on the side of the road many times of the year.

Any pics Sled?

I think the wind farm is a pretty bad eye sore, but the elk don't seem to mind them at all.
