Title: Area 11 won't reopen August 1st
Post by: hunthard on July 28, 2023, 10:45:37 AM
Well you can kiss fishing for kings goodbye, buddy just got off the phone with WDFW, 11 will reopen 9-1 for Pinks and Silvers but no retention for Kings. What a joke the Gay Dept I mean game dept is.

I find that hard to believe.
No pink fishing until September?  :dunno:

There is still 5-600 fish left in the quota.  I imagine they would open it up mid Aug for 2 or 3 days.
**From the July 15 notice**
Reason for action: Salmon fishing is being temporarily suspended because the sublegal encounter limit has reached 83% (3,209 of 3,845) of what was agreed to in this year’s List of Agreed Fisheries (LOAF). Feedback from Puget Sound Sports Fishing Advisory Group and other members of the public indicated a desire to preserve salmon fishing opportunity for August. Therefore, WDFW will suspend the fishery now to preserve opportunity for later in the summer season.

Ok, we will revisit this on August 1st.

I spoke with a local bio friend yesterday that said WDFW has no intention of opening it up. He said they have 100+ chinook in the pens earlier than they have ever had them, and that’s with low warm water even. They think it should open for sport angling.

The derby scheduled for next week is going to be in trouble.

I believe the derby has been cancelled.  I also heard from a good source that they are not going to re-open chinook fishing in area 11.  13 will probably be next.  Death by 1000 cuts as far as hunting and fishing goes in this state.  What a CROC!

Any clue what their reasoning is for not opening it for pinks?

This bums me out.

My understanding is that the quota for "encounters" with undersized fish has been exceeded. I believe they determine this through in the field interviews with people fishing or at the ramps and reports from their research boats that fish the local waters. They then apply a super scientific formula to determine the number of actual encounters.  It has nothing to do with the actual catch quota of legal fish.  Consequently, they aren't going to allow any fishing in order to avoid any further encounters with sub-legals. It's all about their expert science and political agenda.   >:( :bash:

Why do we use barbless hooks if the magic formula is all about encounters? Oh I might know, cuz WDFW.

I would like them to revisit the “no fishing from a floating device” closure so we could hit the beach for pinks, but that won’t happen. So now I’m forced to go to the year around docks and try to catch as many wild kings as I can. Lol

Well, since no one is fishing at all, I guess their agenda has already been fairly effective. But I guess I don’t have any skin in the game since I don’t have a boat and am limited to catching unicorns off the pier/beach. I do appreciate the never surrender attitude, but I think they’ve already won the war and I’m just trying to get my 3 year old hooked into a pink off the beach. Lol

I’ve been fishing areas 9.10 and 13 over the last 4 days and have harvested 2 coho, 2 pinks and just list a chinook at the boat.

So since you’re slammin salmon in other areas from your boat, I don’t see the problem with letting people catch pinks from the beach in 11.

So the season was closed because of encounters with sub legal chinook.  Now they re-open it for shore and dock fishing but you can't keep a legal chinook?  WDFW science at it's best. :dunno:

Chinook are chinook, when you hit the quota you're done.

The fishery was closed because of sub legal encounters. And by the way, most of these in area 11 were net pen fish they released from Pt. Defiance in June.  We never came close to hitting the quotas for legal chinook. So why can't we keep them now?

Because the people who represent the sport fishery aren’t representing.

Fish checker interviews and what anglers report. They also do their own test fishing with wdfw employees. Once they have a sampling of data they apply it to the total participation and come up with a figure. It's pretty much an educated guess.

I'm not exactly sure and I don't think they are either.  It must be some kind of super scientific formula they apply based on legal fish checked, interviews in the field and their "research" teams out fishing.  Maybe something along the lines of assuming 4 sub legal encounters for every person interviewed or observed fishing daily.  I don't really know.  I can think of 2 sub legal encounters personally during June and July, and I fish quite a bit.  They're playing a shell game with us.  Hoodwinking; gas lighting whatever you want to call it.
Title: Re: Area 11 won't reopen August 1st
Post by: Stein on August 10, 2023, 03:20:42 PM
I don't think it matters if they are sublegal or native.  If you catch one, it's an encounter and we only have so many encounters.  It doesn't matter if you catch 10 resident blackmouth, 10 shakers on their way out or 10 Stilly natives, they count the same.

Many of us don't say anything alteady. DFW has that factored in. Whether you say yes or no to releasing anything, you get their number figured in.
Title: Re: Area 11 won't reopen August 1st
Post by: hunthard on August 11, 2023, 08:59:14 AM
Unless I have a fish punched on my card I tell them I didn't catch a thing, i've even had them ask me if I caught any dogfish, I don't know this for a fact or not but I bet they just take the number of boats and what ever a couple of boats said they caught and then avaerage it out.
Title: Re: Area 11 won't reopen August 1st
Post by: KP-Skagit on August 11, 2023, 10:47:11 AM
Unfortunately the DFW is very aware that no one tells them the truth. So its most likely that they take the number of boats and apply what the test fisherman caught.

And likely that method is biased as test fisherman fish all day every day and probably do better on average then the fleet.

Or their luck has a huge sway because there are not a ton of them. I fished next to a test fishery boat the landed a half dozen or so shakers. In the same timeframe we caught one large wild we released.

I almost never interact with them in my area. I have spoken briefly with them in Neah Bay and Shilshole, but keep it very simple and offer no extra info. Just whats on my catch card.

I do because they also collect data that probably helps manage the fishery.

They have planes that count boats and know how many rods per boat, so at some level the dock checks only refine that.  If you skip it, they still know you fished.

I do not believe that it helps anymore. I do believe that the new direction is to be hands off for any consumptive use for resources. Every check mark hurts them emotionally but in the long run furthers their excuses for less opportunity. I feel they do not care about sportsman, so I no longer care about them. I fish and enjoy on my terms now. I do feel bad for LEO as they are good people who love the sport but must enforce others regulations.

30 fish day today, I was busy! :chuckle:

14 shakers, and 16 legal size, lost 9 with these damn barbless hooks. We released pinks netted and ended the day on a double.

Sad note, we helped out a old guy who’s fishing buddy died as they were netting his fish.

We were out Friday, lost a decent fish, ton of shakers.  Guys next to us had it dialed in fishing bait trolling with lead.  Fish were there, we just weren't throwing the right stuff out.

Hoping it stays decent, have family coming in end of the week.  If salt slows down, hoping to find some rivers not blown out.
