Title: Stupid question
Post by: Bean Counter on June 03, 2009, 05:17:54 PM
I have really, really bad animal allergies. are there any good dogs for bird hunting that wouldn't cause me to sneeze to death? Not willing to get allergy 'medicine.'  How about bear/cougar hunting? need hounds for that?

Not sure about bear & cougar hounds but for the most part your not suppose to use them in WA as near as I can tell.

For birds, I think your shorter-haired dogs will be less alergenic, but unless it is something odd like a portugues water dog I think they all have some... Seems like I heard the full sized poodles (some of which hunt) are better than some breeds.

God Bless,

Dogs that have hair are not likely to have allergies with. Dogs with fur the dander is what causes problems.

You should look into a Pudelpointer  :dunno:

Full size puddles won't aggravate your allergies

Don't think the pudelpointers are the same as poodle crosses when it comes to alergies, closer to like a Griffon.

With a few exceptions for cougar hunting, no dogs allowed for hunting except upland game and waterfowl

How can a dog that is NOT (lab) allergy free and breed it to a dog that IS (supposively) and possibly get a promise the dog is allergy free. Make's no sense to me! I have seen these dogs and they have more hair than a lab on it's own!!!
Not my choice..If you want a poodle buy a poodle..if you want a lab, buy a lab.

I would find something short haired, have it bathed often, buy a portable air filter system or keep it outside. All dogs shed, just to different degrees. Weimeraners aren't bad for shedding.

This is not necessarily the problem.  I'm allergic to cats and it's not the actual hair that I'm allergic too.  It's the SALIVA.  When they lick their hair it falls off and the saliva is on it.  Most people aren't allergic to the actual hair.  :)

Rabbits and coons as well.

Pudelpointers are hypoallergenic. It doesn't matter how long the hair is but but that it is hair and not fur. I have a pudelpointer and she does shed but very little. I didn't care if she was hypoallergenic but she is the best hunting dog I have ever had. Pudelpointers are actually a breed that is older than the German Wirehair and not a fad designer breeding like the Labradoodle. Getting a Labradoodle to be an all around hunting dog would be an uphill battle in my opinion.

Shannon,
Good point, I should have noted that about the Pudelpointer.  I really like em and will look very seriously at them for my next.  How old is yours now?  I think you may have told me in the past and I forgot, what is your pups coat like?

Mine is 18 months old. Her coat is slick for a Pudelpointer. She is more like a shorthair. Great for upland hunting but I would need to watch her on freezing water duck hunting. I hunted her this last winter when it was in the teens and she would break ice for a retrieve but I would have to go to jump shooting when she started getting to cold. Some pudelpointers can handle any weather but I would say if your planning on hunting over water in subfreezing weather every day get a different dog. Snow and cold upland hunting doesn't even phase her but the water mixed with super cold is hard on her. She wants to do it and would go until she died so I have to keep an eye on her. If its super cold I usually jump shoot the open water anyways so she meets my needs. On upland birds she is fun to watch. I would recommend Cedarwoods Kennels in Boise if your interested in one. He did a great job and I let him pick her out for me and I got exactly what I wanted based on my conversations with him about what I wanted.

My wife is VERY allergic to dogs. we wanted one but just coudn't find anythign that she could be around. we found that she could be arounf my couzins Wiem. and even cudle and play with it. we ended up getting one of our own and had no problems. It eve nlived in the house with us.

Word of caution if you get a Wiem. be sure to research them first. These dogs need lots of human affection and attention. they will be with you every move you make!!! They will follow around every step and even to the bathroom. If you want a dog that wants to do everything for you these are the ones. they thrive on makeing the master happy.
