Looking forward to viewing this thread again in a month, here's a pic from this spring.
-
Damn, nice bears, the one on the left is uge
-
Well I’ve been out since 430 this morning and no bears seen yet. Did cut some fresh tracks down in a Creekbottom full of ripe berries. Which could also be the case with these guys getting bears on the first day. Maybe they put their time in and scouted and found the ripe berries. I did….. unfortunately I just haven’t seen anything yet so I guess I won’t be accused of baiting since I haven’t been successfull. Always cracks me up when guys think something is impossible just because they can’t do it. Tons of stuff I can’t do but that definitely doesn’t make it impossible or make the people that are achieving it cheaters
Good luck everyone. Get out there and fill a couple bear tags. Find the berries, call them in, spot and Stalk…. you can’t get them if your not out there. The deer and elk will thank you

Nice bears so far.
Congrats to the successful hunters.
-
Thin em out
I hope all are successful 👍
-
I’ve had bears on cameras all spring and summer. I’m sure if I sit in my spot for a couple days I could shoot one pretty easy. Like others have said they are getting thick.
Congrats and a huge thank you to the successful hunters so far.
I hope plenty more are successful and I hope they post the success photos.
-
Took a couple guys who had never killed a bear before today. Fun to see them so excited.
Going up tomorrow taking my daughter and her boyfriend. See if we can get another.
-
Just checking in here to follow along. Can't believe some of the posts I've seen deleted here today out of this thread.
Sure is unfortunate to see that out of fellow hunters. Keep it on track.
-
Went out today and saw 1 bear, was a shady area with some Salal berries he was eating. Saw a bunch of cougar & bear tracks in the area. Didnt notice him at first, took my pack off and got some water out and as I was drinking I heard him stand up and start sniffing around, scared him off as I leaned over to pick up my rifle.
Thanks again for all the help over the last few months! was awesome to find one, I need to stay calm next time though!

I've only seen 1 bear while hunting in my life and you guys got 2 in 1 day! Nicely done.
-
Congrats to the successful bear hunters!!!! Hope our group gets to add to this thread in the next month or two. Lots of bears to be had and any dead bear is a good bear!!!
-
Great to see some success on opening day! Hopefully a good pile of them end up on here by the seasons end
-
Awesome bears hitting the ground!

Last year same spot same opener my daughter and I doubled. So that’s two years in a row. I never really saw many bears until I really tried to focus on being where they were at for the time of season.

That is fact....if your not actively hunting them, its easy to not see them. Once you learn how and where to hunt them.....it becomes a lot easier to see them. I would never see them, now I see them all the time.

Jackpot. Be where the bears are.
-
It’s just like any other hunting. If you see a bear in a certain area even if you shoot it another bear will move in. Bears hang out where they hang out. It’s just like s hood turkey spot, deer spot or elk spot.

First day magic! Been keeping tabs on a few bruins frequenting a trail near some river bottoms. Been trail cam’ing this area for a few years and I’ve found bears to be very pattern prone as long as they aren’t messed with. Climbed into the tree stand today at 3pm and an hour and half later I could hear one moving through the brush. Almost busted out the predator call when I wasn’t hearing anything but waited and about 5 minutes later this boar came walking below the stand about 50 yards away down the trail. One shot and this 5 foot, 175lb boar didn’t move. Not huge but pretty stoked about his white ‘heart’ patch in the center of his chest. Best of luck to everyone this year!!
-
Congrats Joel. Nice bear
-
Well I almost joined the club today, would have been awesome to get one on the opener. Unfortunately I missed the shot.

Congrats Joel! Cool patch on that dude for sure!

What weapon did you use up in that tree stand? I've been considering tree stand slug hunting

Used a Marlin 30-30 lever action with open sights. Longest shot in the that spot was about what I took at 50 yards and its about the only open sight rifle I have with the exception of a shotgun. Thought about using a shotgun but I just dont like the ballistics of a slug (too big of a hole!) and 00. buck i think would be a little too light on a bear with their thick hide and lots of fat. I was taught by a great bear hunter to shoot IN the back half of the shoulder, not behind the shoulder, capturing damage to the scapula which "takes out their front driveline" while still getting lead in the breadbasket. Has worked very well for me in this placement, but I dont know if .00 or .000 buck would have enough to get through that bone and still open the bear up for bleeding/bloodtrail if they take off. Have shot 3 bears in the brush with this 30-30 and every one DUMPED in its tracks...lots of knock-down power.
-
Congrats everyone, keep em coming!!

Love these threads. Congrats on the harvests so far!!

Folks.
This is a success thread. If you’re not posting dead bears or congrats posts for someone else’s dead bears, take it somewhere else. This is not the thread for debate, criticism, anything other than your dead bears and congrats posts and thanks for sharing posts. That’s it. I’m going to nuke a bunch of posts now and it’s probably going to aggravate some folks.
Don’t care.
Start a new thread.

Got a pretty good one last night. Not a giant bear but judging by its lack of teeth it appears to be pretty old.. really skinny like the last 7 or so bears.

It was unfortunate for the group to all miss opening morning. But we made up for it dropping 2 bears for the afternoon hunt. It was a late night for both being in different areas but we got it done. Himalayan Black Berries seem to be starting off a bit slower but salmon berries and thimble berries and trailing blackberries have made up for it. Definitely a lot of food out there but the rest of the week has shown minimal bear sign in areas. Just gotta keep covering ground and searching for more.

I haven't been able to get out yet and it's driving me nuts. I'm seeing ripe blackberries up to about 500' ASL. How high are you guys seeing ripe ones?
Thanks,
Okie John

The morning of the second the wife spotted one we put a stalk on for an hour plus. We set up three times for shots but the bear never slowed enough to get it done. Eventually we were winded. A half hour later she spotted another bear a mile away. We watched that bear for four hours before it move into a good spot for a shot. Fortunately the winds shifted in our favor too. We got to within 225 yrds where she dropped it on the spot. While boning it out two more bears walked into our area. One was 20 yards away standing watching us. If we weren’t so hot and getting eaten alive by flies I would have taken that one. We had an amazing 24 hour period in which we saw seven bears.

Close to about the same elevation. But in one area they are starting to ripen. Then the next they are still flowering or green at equal elevations. Struck out again on the morning hunt. Just trying to put in the time to get another tag filled.

Thanks for the inspiration! Seeing some gorgeous bears in the dirt. Haven't seen much sign and zero bears so far, but going to keep pounding dirt until i find berries or bears.

We hiked into some higher elevation spots this weekend in Western WA. Around 3,000'-4,500'. Huckleberries and blue berries were just starting to get a tad bit of purple showing. Salmon berries were just starting to rippen as well. Not much for ripe berries. I think those are down lower based on where I saw many rigs parked. Another week or two and the bears should be gorging themselves.

This sounds terrible! How could I ever avoid such a horrible bear infested area?

This was an Unbelievable day. My first ever bear. I called in with a rabbit in distress call that I made. We dropped the meat off at the butcher and it’s going to be a gorgeous rug at the cabin.
Thanks to my bro Chad Rowden and cousin Jason for all the help!

Curious what a taxidermist does with that nice throat/chest patch? Any specific plans? I had a bear with a nice patch. Rugged it and ruined the whole patch. I should have done something different.

I believe there is a couple called in.
This topic or thread is for success stories and photos only.
So it would be best to start a new topic for calling bears.
I might give it a try in the next few days.
Nothing better to do in 100 degree weather.

Not a big one but I’m super stoked about it still.

A dead bear is a good bear.....especially with a bow. Our family is not picky with our first tag....we get a little more picky with our second tag, mostly because bears are the one big game animal that allows you to be in the woods for most of the hunting seasons.
Stong work!!

Looks like a good one, congrats 👍

I haven’t read all of the posts just looking at the pictures. Has anyone used a call to call one in?
Little Pathfinder killed his bear last year (2022) with a call.
We tried it a couple of times this year but didn't get a response. I think the right bear has to be in the right mood. I also think smart, old bears circle you and try to catch your scent before coming in. The bear he killed last year with the call wasn't real big. He was also in a tree stand last year. We were on the ground trying to call them this year. :dunno:

That must have taken some considerable strength! Remind me never to get on little pathfinder’s bad side :chuckle:

Wife got a nice bear yesterday. Measured 6’ 8” long. Skull still have flesh on it but it looks like it will be in that 19”-20” range. 227# gutted super skinny.

Congrats, this is a beautiful bear. Hoping the heat wasnt too much of an issue, and you can enjoy all of the meat.
Of course. #1 priority.

My first bear after 8 years of buying tags and only seeing three.
Every time I was in one spot, he’d show up on camera at my other spot. This went on for a few days. My mom said he must have had cams on me and decided to play with my mind. After seeing him on cams for a week while was away, coming back and playing cat and mouse for three days, I was mad at the bear. Yesterday I sat for half the day hoping to catch him in his pattern, and of course he deviated. I never saw him in person since he was at my other spot for a few minutes and there’s no way to get their quickly. Looking back through cams I saw he like to be in one spot regularly between 8am-9am. So on a few hours of sleep, I was there shortly after 6am. At 6:33am he took a 300WM 180gr Accubond to the heart and into a rear quarter that spun him 180 degrees, then he let out two death rattles. That was a sound I’ll never forget.

OOOOwe! I'd smoke that for a dollar.

2nd bear tag filled yesterday evening on this 300lb (yes, I weighed him) bruin. Tree stand setup on a well used trail in some cool river bottom with heavy brush. Trail camera showed a few bears moving through around 5-6pm. 6:30 came and went and I busted out the mouth predator call and spent 2-3 minutes making a varying rabbit in distress/fawn whine. 10 minutes later this big boar walked out of the brush, stone silent with his nose in the air and looking hard. Well placed shot in the shoulder and he dropped 100 yards later with only a few spots of blood found on his death run.
It was chore getting him out! Scale weighed, minus guts, heart, lungs, etc. said 268lbs which puts him just over 300lbs live weight.
I’m sore this morning!
-
Big mits

That's a big boy!

Awesome job everyone! Enjoy seeing the kids success. There’s definitely nothing like it. I still think I get more excited when my son or wife are successful than when I am. Just gets me jacked up to be able to get somebody out there Who may not yet have all the refined skills you have and have it all come together by teaching and coaching them through the highs and lows of the hunt. Mine has came full circle and is 18 now. Still have all the great memories and I can still drag him away from his girlfriend for a weekend or two during bear, elk and deer season. But my days of planning my whole season around when he can get out around his practices, school, social life are definitely over. Bitter sweet but at least he has the skills he can accomplish it with or without me. I felt kind of left out the first time he said him and his friends were going to go fishing and didn’t need me to tagalong. But at the same time was pretty proud when they came back with a stringer full of fish. Cherish each day you have a field with them and if we are lucky they will let us shuffle around their hunting camps when we are old and keep the coffee hot while we tell the same old stories of the good old days every night

I'll add one to the pile. The result of a long steep hike on Friday, and a much more brutal trek down the next. Just had to pick the last two hottest days of the year this time.

First thing I’ve shot with a smoke pole which made it pretty cool. Only ever been a modern or archery guy.
