Title: Successful start to deer season
Post by: Mulie87 on August 05, 2023, 11:09:46 AM
2023 deer season has started off good. The wife and I drew 2nd deer in Whidbey island. Last night was our first sit in the blind. We were hunting private property over an apple tree. When we arrived at the blind at 7pm we saw a doe bedded 22yds away on another property. 29min later a second doe snuck in and was at the tree. The wife leveled the Savage 220 20ga slug gun and dropped her.

33min later, as I made my first cut on her deer, the original doe we saw bedded was now at the apple tree…only 50yds from us. Now it’s my turn. Due to my backstop, I had to low crawl back towards the blind for a safe shot. As i got close the doe spotted me. I would freeze and she would go back to eating the delicious apples. We played this game for several minutes until she gave me enough time to shoot. I quickly rose to an unsupported double kneeling position. I leveled the shotgun on her shoulder and let the 260gr Remington Accupoint fly…hit! I hit her low and broke her leg. She ran past my wife and bedded. I wound up finishing her off with a second shot. All of this took place within 1hr and 2min.

It was a great start to the hunting season. Next month is a modern rifle quality elk hunt.

How did those accupoints do? Full pass throughs? Ever tried sst, or other varieties? I'm new to the slug game

Good question. Usually the slugs expend all their energy internally with no passthrough. I had passthrough on my second shot because I was standing next to her when I fired. That’s the exit hole you see on the second deer.

We’ve taken 8 deer with these slugs, with shots between 30-50yds. Deer either drop or run 20-30yds and pile up. I’m very satisfied with the Accupoints. I’v never used SSTs, but not against it once I get through my supply of Accupoints.

Indeed. We were eager and happy to get drawn. In June one of us forgot to completely close our garage freezer and lost everything in it, including wild turkey; venison; and salmon🤦🏻‍♂️. This fall is freezer restock season.

Has me thinking sitting in the blind in my shades with a cool drink with an umbrella in it.
Great Start

This guy came in at night. My goal is to hunt him during general and late season.  I’ll eat my tag if I don’t get him.

My daughter shot an apple tree doe, it was by far the best deer I have ever eaten.
