I will get right to the point. Hunters give hunters a bad name. I'm sure there are still some good ones out there, probably most of you folks I'm guessing. I've been at this in Washington for over 40 years and I can't think of one single year where I haven't been sickened by the actions of my fellow hunters. Quite frankly I find a good portion of the hunting community to be *censored*s. Take trail cameras for example. What do you do when you are out hunting on public land and you run across a camera? I've seen hundreds in the woods and have never messed with any of them. Yet we all have stories of getting one stolen. Am I to believe that there is group of anti-hunting thieves prowling around the woods stealing cameras? Nope. Not buying it. It's fellow hunters. My son had his camera stolen from a state piece south of Cheney this week. So if you are the guy that took it, thanks for reminding me again why I have no faith in mankind. It's *censored*s like you that give hunters a bad name.
-
I have had two trail cameras stolen by bears and one stolen by an elk.
Found all three within 100 yards with photos of the culprits.
-
I had the same thing happen in the last couple years in Pierce County on a small piece of land. Of course right after getting 3 different individuals walking a game trail during season. It is a shame. I feel tgese clowns doing this are not liking others in what they think is their spot. And it does suck. Theyare giving the hunting community a bad name. And seperating or deviding us among each other. Sorry tohear it happened to you to.
-
On the other hand, I’ve lost trail cams due to wind storms, down trees, my neglect, or whatever, and have been called by another hunter that found my cam and wanted to return it. (I leave my phone # in the cam for just this very reason).
The world, and hunters, are not all evil thieves.
-
Never stole a cam.
I have had cam and SD cards taken.
I use those cables ,you can buy on Amazon for 15 bucks on sale.
Then I take tree stand steps and put two in the tree.
Put cam up,find a stick,or pinecone or anything and jam it behind the cam in the back. To kinda get it pointed down.
Cablelock it,unscrew steps,make sure you can't reach it .
It works. They can break it,they can cover with a branch.
But chances are something will still be there.
Trust no one.
I agree it sucks.
I've had more people on cam this year than any other.
I'm sure not all are hunters. But sure some are.
Most these types are lazy, they see it too high, and a cable.
They can't handle it.

THIS :yeah:
Pretty positive that 90+% of "stolen" cams are not actually stolen by humans. Web strapping is no match for an elk or bear.
I run quite a few cams every year, have never had 1 stolen. Have had hundreds of bears and elk screw with them though.

It's true.
I even had a cub ,climb the tree and mess with cam.
After I put it up with tree stand steps.

Have had the same experience. But have also had people mess eith cameras. Try to pry off lock boxes from trees, erase memory cards and steal a camera right after messing with it.
-
Technically speaking a bear is a hunter? :chuckle:
As for humans messing with cameras, lots of non-hunters out in the hills since covid hit.
Had a trap smashed by a non-hunter type. I have no idea why they would be where the trap was?
-
It’s the sad reality of this day and age. Can’t trust anyone.
I use 4” lag bolts and a lock box for all my cameras and still had one pried out of a tree and taken. Have a clear image of an individual on another camera trying to do the same thing and the sheriff department says they can’t do anything because the camera was not actually taken. No matter what we do you can only keep the honest out, sad but true
-
I feel for you. I average one stolen per year. Mile back at the least and maybe 1-2 people a year is all I get. I also lag them and use 3/16 welded boxes we make ourselves. Have come to check or pull them only to find 4 shiny studs where someone actually packed a sawzall in to cut it off a tree. Had them stolen on private land as well. It’s always frustrating. I agree with you on that when secured hard, it’s another hunter. Just the reg strap that comes with it, could be anything. Sucks being a part of this club, but going higher is probably the best option, even with a box.
-
Side note, I’ve found a lot of cams over the years. Just randomly run across them while out and exploring. I’ve never once thought to take one. I try and avoid the cam shot so I’m not on there and also to not screw up the area. I don’t get why people think it’s ok
-
I caught one of the thieves this year. :bash: :bash: :bash:
If I find him, I’ll make him dinner and mount his head on my wall.

This one is in a lock box.

I mean really... you can't blame them, you were spying on them :)
-
I am a little concerned about one of my spypoint cell cams, hasn't been active for 2 weeks. I use it as a security camera at our cabin and everything was good, now it has no service and lost power... which is weird because its solar. Either it died or someone jacked it without getting their picture taken which is unlikely... dunno :dunno:
I have never touched anyone's camera, possibly an inappropriate picture opportunity, but never touched one....

A few years ago I had someone take the batteries and sd card out of a camera. I happened to be telling a buddy about it and mentioned the general area. He told me he had a camera in that area that they unbolted off the tree (yes, he had it lag bolted in a security box) and they took a chainsaw in to cut his tree down and steal his treestand.
The more we got to talking we realized that both of these thefts happened within a year of each other and about 100 yards from each other.
To this day I wonder if there was some freak show giant buck in there that somebody didn’t want anyone else to know about, or if there was just some general dirt bag POS hunting around that area.

That really sucks. I think some members may think that was a bear messing with you. :chuckle:

I kid you not, I put a ranting rave on here about it and a guy seriously thought a bear could have popped open the camera and oh so carefully removed the batteries and sd card.

If a cam is missing from a bear there’s always evidence that a bear took it. It simply doesn’t just take the camera from the tree. There’s usually busted pieces from cam , claw marks on tree. Elk love to mess with cams, but once again they don’t take them off tree without busting them and usually however the straps are attached to cam is what breaks and I’ve never had a elk take a cam ever and I run allot of cams in elk country .
-
I've found several that have obviously not been attended to in recent times.(i do with them what I do with every other one, try to give a wide berth) I can't help but wonder how many people hang them and forget where the hell they put them, then blame someone for stealing them. Return to the right tree
-
This one is in a lock box.
That is a great shot!
-
It's a combination of all of it. I've had bears knock them off before, but I've also had obvious human theft of sd cards or whole cameras. The worst time to leave up a cam is modern rifle season. I swear almost every theft has happened during mid October.
-
Made a post about a month or so ago. We all know bears like cameras. Found several half eaten and pieces spread all around the area. They didn't take this one they vandalized and left it for me to find. I agree with th OP it's not just cameras that get taken or messed with. You would think knowing there is somone that you know carrying a weapon that could show up any second would be enough to prevent but I guess a$$holes just need to fart.

:chuckle:

My Bil went and checked his cameras out of Carbanero this am and 1 was stolen. Same place where they took my sd card a few yrs again. Live and learn I guess. I will say it and maybe get some flack for it but there is some white trash hood rats down there that do not care about anything but themselves. See you in the woods in the coming weeks. >:(
-
I pulled down two cams today.
It was kinda on a ridge.
So I put one cam below the road, one cam above the road.
Maybe 500 yards apart from each other, had different animals on each cam. Which was surprising.
But I've had 9 different people on the two cams.
Never the same people on both.
Not one legal buck on each, one spike mule deer ,one time since the beginning of June.
But ya pulled them,if I leave them there I'm just asking to get jacked.
Not even a decent buck around to make it worth it.
-
My hunting partner had a camera go missing in the Manashtash a few years ago. He put it up in July and went to retrieve it when we went hunting in October but it was gone. Fast forward a couple of years and he's hunting the same area and low and behold there's his camera covered in debris and dead batteries but still on the same tree he hung it on. He just looked in the wrong place but he was sure he was right. I think Boneaddict is spot on with his assessment.
-
I've never found evidence of people messing with mine though half have caught people on them at some point. Seems like most people smile and wave if they notice it. Or in this case, "Rock On"

It was about 20 people's honey hole I guess...total zoo up there. We were a couple days ahead of him packing my buck out though :chuckle:

Never had a camera stolen, but did have one jackwagon pick up my block of salt and pack it around a bit before he dropped it back on the ground. Don't think he ever did see the camera, or maybe he did and saw that it was a cel camera and decided to not swipe anything :dunno:

I've lost 2 cameras to thieves just this year. I think there's a subset of hunters that take pride in bending as many rules as they can. I've met some before. They usually like chew and energy drinks, take long shots without practice, and steal people's trail cams or memory cards. Other hobbies may include burning tires, dumping trash on the side of the road, and claiming spots.

I've only had one guy mess with a cam. Was on video walking up to it and opening it, then looked around, closed it and walked off. I imagine he thought another cam was on it.
This one I'm surprised stayed up, he knocked it all around.

I currently have 10 cameras out in WA and haven't ever had anyone mess with any of them. Most of my stuff is on private where if someone did notice them they would probably be more inclined to steal them to cover their tracks.
On the flip side, I had 4 out in ID this year and 2 of them were stolen (not by 4 legged animals) as of 2 weeks ago. I'm sure the locals will say it was a fellow apple maggot that stole them.

Rock star

You was close. :chuckle:
I got to tell why Rock star. Ever try to freeze one.
Stuff is like anti-freeze,if your gonna drink that stuff.
Might as well go big,or go home. :chuckle:
I do still have one here or there. I was starting to have digestive problems. So I had to slow it down.
Monsters are probably better for ya than rock star.
Favorite rock star. Zero sugar silver ice.
I'm down to like one a week now, instead of one or two a day.
Back on topic ,about these trail cam stealing SOB.
-
Those critter trail cam pictures always make me smile. Thanks!

From the opening post: I will get right to the point. Hunters give hunters a bad name.
Careful now, there seems to be a right opinion to hold and a wrong opinion and anyone who deviates form what the powers that be decide is the consensus opinion that "we all need to stick together." Who are you to judge? etc.

So recently I've been out checking cams alot.
Discovered someone has put a cam up about 30 yards from one of my cams. No harm ,no foul ,public land.
I kinda pride myself in trying to get decent public land bucks on cam. The only thing that made me worry is it was the only cam I didn't have locked with a cable. So the first time, which was a few days ago and when I discovered it. Went past and checked my cam.
All that was at the other cam was salt. So I put my hat over my face and pretended I was a big buck licking on the salt. My kid stood behind the cam tree , laughing away at me.
Today figured I'd whip in there, cause I have an extra cable lock from other cams that I have pulled for the season.
So now there is a salt block, and a deer block. So I figured they had to get the pics of my first encounter. :chuckle: :chuckle:
So checked my cam.Just a few doe pics. It's only been a few days anyway. This spot has never been a hotspot ,like a month soak I'll end up with a 100 pics. Not a lot at all. There is a decent buck in there. But both cams sit on the property line of public to private.
I've hunted this spot for many years, Archery they may have a chance. Modern I would be very surprised to see anything but you never know.
Anyway.....
I didn't touch or mess with anything on there setup.
Which is the way it should be.
I locked my cam with a cable,so my card or cam doesn't get stolen.
So I'm kinda waiting to see if my pic gets posted on the forum in the next few years or whatever. Should be funny,me pretending to be a buck.
I would think they would know by now, with this being the second event of me pretending to be a buck on there cam.
That I'm not the guy that wants to screw with there stuff.
Maybe we will cross paths at some point. I would love to trade pics.
Or just talk about the area a bit.
And I'm kinda waiting to see if my stuff gets messed with.
So I'll probably let it soak for a while,if they are archery I don't wanna be there screwing up there hunt. But will return right before modern to see what's going on.

Hunters and illegal off roaders mess with my cams. Only one has truly been stolen no doubt by a hunter.

PLEASE quit blaming hunters..........,,,
Unless you SAW IT HAPPEN you have ZERO PROOF it was a hunter, just speculation.
Your camera is gone regardless of the reason, calling out fellow hunters with no proof just gives us all a bad name.
This is not only for the OP, but ALL FOLKS who blame hunters for the theft

Gosh maybe it was tree huggers during hunting season that bushwacked through a very steep nasty canyon to get to absolutely no where productive. I hadn't considered it could have been mushroom pickers in terrible weather hiking a flooded creek for two miles to avoid the nasty canyon either. You right I'm sure it wasn't hunters.

Well discovered another cam today.
Forest service road about 10 mile long ,got to the dead end.
Get to the end, four piles of corn and sweet cob.
I'm turning around and noticed the Camara.
I pulled forward out of view ,walked back lifted my shirt and let them see some old man nipple.
Other than that didn't mess with it.
But also want to say .....
If your the type to put your cam on a main road.
You can't put your cam a 100 yards off the road.
You got piles of corn on the main road.
Everybody that turns around at the end of the road gets there picture taken.
Your kinda asking for someone to steal it.
Told the wife, hope he takes that down before modern.
Cause that will definitely get stolen.
Like said, public land....put it wherever you like.
I showed my wife about five others spots on the way out, that had water, cover, food, that you could easily walk a 100 yards and setup a cam . With no elevation gain. Probably be way better.
Someone like that gets there cam stolen I can't really feel that sorry.
Heck maybe next year I'll slap a cam in one of the better/other spots next year. :dunno:
