Title: Early goose
Post by: crabcreekhunter on August 28, 2023, 04:54:37 PM
Anyone heading out for early goose this weekend?  Been many years since I’ve hunted early geese but have a field that’s been holding birds like clock work the last month, has me excited.  Always nice to get out in  at shirt and shorts for geese in the morning and doves in the evening.  Btw good steel goose loads are hard to come buy, had to splurge on some Bismuth.

Im trying something new and floating a river on kayaks. Ive narrowed down a couple of loaf spots and a potential roost I plan to hit, and Im stoked about the idea of shooting geese while chilling in the water instead of sweating out a gallon of water in a layout blind.

Floating the rivers is great. Steelhead, sea runs, deer, and geese all in one trip.

One of these days! I'm an upland hunter who would like to hunt waterfowl. Just curious, have you tried Hooked on Sports in Wenatchee for steel goose loads? I've had decent luck finding non-tox there in the past.

A kayak hunt would be a blast, might have to do that one of these years.  Found some Hevi-Shot bismuth for slightly more than decent steel loads so good to go. Didn’t make it over to hooked on toys but usually have a good selection like you said.  3 1/2 BBB doesn’t seem as popular as it was a few years ago.

Horrible fire danger over here on the east side. Around 300 homes or structures gone in such a short time.  Be careful because many ways wildfires can start as we all know.

My early goose hunts are always a float down the river. Have never needed the big candle sticks, or even a 12. If I'm looking for deer, I just use the bow. No deer, my 20 with chukar loads will usually get 2 or 3 in one shot. It isn't cannon loud which is great cuz there is usually another big group within 200yds.

My plan was a lot better than my shooting. Time to hit the trap range and pattern these shells again.

That’s awesome!

Early goose was an interesting one for sure. Packed with a bunch of different setups and fisherman out and about. Well most were fisherman. One was acting like a fisherman motoring at the geese shooting under power of the motor extremely long shots right toward a park like setting. Not cool on many different levels and of course illegal. Of course he didn't get anything. But other fisherman decided to walk down and set up really close to us keeping most of the geese from coming our way. Oh well public ground and the fisherman were having a good time catching a few fish. So we relaxed most of the morning watching things play out and had a group of 3 geese swing over us. Brother got one and I dropped one with my 410. I should have shot the second bird to but was excited seeing the first goose of the year drop on first pull of the trigger. Tss hammered that thing. So a pair of geese for us and a good set of shots. Should have taken pics. Hope everyone had a good time on the opener.

I scouted having to stay closer to home because of gas prices and didn’t see a reason to buy a license and practice on clays.  Maybe next time my spots will work.🤣

The 100 birds or so that we’re using the field the last month morning and night must have been worked over on the way from the roost.  Never showed but knocked a couple down Sunday.  Doves on the other hand were fantastic, between them and the pigeons my shoulder is pretty sore.

I need to get back to dove and pigeon hunting.  I have have 3-4 dozen dove and the same in pigeon decoys.  Just not as many around here as their used to be.
