Great thread idea!

I'll tag along. I don't have any pack out pics to share, but my grandpa used to breed appaloosa mules for pack strings. I love seeing pictures like this

First photo is my Peaches hunt from 2014.

Second one does not have any animals in it, but this was our pack animal train pulling into camp for our Goat hunt in the ONP in 2020.

This trip was with my Dad, and friend of my uncles, from back in the 90s. Dad killed this 5x5 late in the evening on day 4 of the hunt. A long, LONG ride out in the dark put us back in camp well after midnight. I went back in the next day with Phil, my uncles friend, now our friend, to pack out the bull. We went in the same way we came out. Was a lot easier in the dark as you could not see the certain death cliff we rode for at least a 1/4 mile. You could reach out and touch the rock wall on one side, and fall to certain death on the other. As long as your pony stayed on the narrow trail, you were fine. Riding this in the daylight caused a ridge to form in the center of the leather stretched over the seat of my saddle. Wish I had a picture of that section of trail, but I remember not wanting to mess with a camera for some reason....I really took in the scenery of where Dad killed his bull while we were breaking the bull down. Dad made a good shot on the bull. The bull fell, and began to roll. About the time it was really picking up momentum, the bull hung up in a down pine on a "flatter" spot on the mountain side. As you can see in the ivory collection picture, had the bull rolled much further, he would have had a long way to go to the bottom. Sure glad I have these memories with my Dad.

Sounds like a story wanting to be told  :dunno:

 :chuckle:
I spent the whole summer before the trip breaking colts for people in order to pay for the hunting trip, neglecting the pack horse training on my own horses. Mine were in shape from team roping all summer but they’d only done 1 practice ride with pack gear.

After 11 hours driving, we had to chain up all 4 on the pickup and 1 axle on the trailer for the last 5 miles to the trailhead.

From the time we left the trailhead to our planned camp spot (21 miles) we had countless wrecks and rodeos. It took us significantly longer to get there than expected so it was full on dark when we got there.

We’d never set my wall tent up with logs before, just with a kit I built out of conduit. It took us 2 hours to get the tent up and almost multiple fist fights.

And that was just the first 48 hours!

Nope. We got snowed out 4 days in and had to pack back out. Hunted the next few days from the truck and got into elk but weren’t able to seal the deal.

I probably should have been more specific, you thinking about getting stock once again?

Used to head up to the BCH annual spring ride up Beaver creek through Pipestone. Riding a 3yr greenbroke Appy filly one year. An old boy from Twisp was riding his Appy stud. It was a rodeo several times on that trip keeping them apart! I think you might know the gent?😉🤠

This thread makes me wish I'd taken pics of all my pack trips into Frosty Pass in the High cascades back in the '70's with Norm Trapp and my one pack in trip to the Lost Fork of the Judith River in Central Montana. The horse I was given had quite an attitude. Must have know I was a rookie when it came to horses.
