Muzzle Brakes are a vented device that is fitted by a gunsmith and screwed onto the end of your rifle barrel; and is Designed to Significantly Reduce the Rifle’s RECOIL. In magnum calibers, recoil can cause flinching and other bad habits leading to loss of accuracy. Expanding gases from powder being ignited in the cartridge causes acceleration of the bullet through the barrel. When the bullet leaves the barrel so do the gasses; this action causes the violent reaction of the rifle forcefully slamming rearward into the shoulder causing disruption of your focus on the sight picture through the scope to the target. A miss or less than desirable shot placement can occur.
Muzzle brakes reduce recoil by diverting some of these gasses out to the sides, through the vents or ports (holes) taking away a portion of recoil. The effectiveness is dependent on the design of the brake and the caliber of the rifle. You can expect any where from 35 to 50% recoil reduction. A .375 H&H will have the felt recoil of a .30-06; and a .338 will feel close to a .270; a 7mm Rem Mag and a .300 RUM will have the felt recoil of a .243
The muzzle brake, fitted on to the end of your rifle barrel by a qualified gunsmith, will add a few inches to the length of the barrel, with no loss of velocity of the bullet. The bullet never touches the device as it passes through; the expanding gasses still accelerate the bullet as normal. It is the deflected gasses that allow the rifle to remain considerably more still.
The sight picture of the target is easier to engage when "FLINCH" is ELIMINATED from the Mind of the Shooter. Also, when hunting alone without the aid of a "spotter" with binoculars; the quality muzzle brake will Allow the Shooter to Spot His Own Long-Range Shot, and how the animal reacts to the shot.
And yes, there is some Disadvantage to muzzle brakes. The increase of muzzle blast is substantial. They can be VERY LOUD and damaging to the ears! The risks can be diminished hearing with some permanent hearing damage. Regular earmuffs can reduce noise levels by 25dB +/- while the sound levels of a muzzle brake magnum can be as high as 128dB +/-
meaning noise levels with earmuffs on are in excess of 100dB !! A hunter in the field shooting without protection, will experience immediate, and near complete temporary hearing loss. Hearing returns after three or four minutes, but a small portion of hearing is permanently lost each time a shot is fired.

Good explanation........ :yeah:
-
No wonder I can't hear!
-
WHAT? HUH? :chuckle:
-
Great explanation! More people need to read this one!

I hate muzzle brakes. I like to hear :chuckle: :chuckle: I have a friend that has a 300rum, who is scared to shoot it. It is in my opinion useless to him. I also know a few people who have sold their magnums because they are affraid to shoot them. I shoot a 300rum no brake, my brother has one with a break. I make damn sure I am standing well behind him when he is shooting. I have just convinced myself that it doesn't kick that bad.
-
Who would need a brake on a 300rum? :dunno: Oh wait let me take a guess, hmmm, someone who probably should not be shooting it in the first place. :P
-
I thought about getting a brake when I purchased my 300rum but was talked out of it by a couple of gunsmiths. I'm glad they did. The only time that I don't like to shoot my rifle is when sighting in, but solved that with the lead sled. Bear
-
338-378 with a muzzle break without ear plugs is not the greatest sound in the world. especially in a covered area.
-
I have an adjustable muzzle break on my 300 WSM. I have also added a mercury dampening system into the stock. I can crank up the horse power and it still feels like shooting my .243. It will however, suck the air out of your lungs if your standing near it when it goes off with the break open. :o
-
when i was 8 years old i went pig huntin with my dad. I shot this big ferrel sow in the head and it started to run in circles making its way toward us, so my dad quickly took the back up shot. Unfortunately, i was sitting 2 feet directly to the side of him when he shot his .300 remington ultra mag equipped with a new muzzle brake. My ears were ringing for days. No permenent damage thank goodness. No lie about making your gun louder

Sorry, I just saw that Bucklucky beat me to the joke. :bash:

I have a 338Rum iam thinking of putting on a brake so i can shoot it in the offseason, when i first got the gun it had a hard rubber pad and it bruised me from my chest to elbow, put on a limbsaver pad its a lot better, but after 20-30 rounds i get a little flinchy,so iam thinking a brake so i can practice long range, then take it off for hunting.
-
was thinking about putting a brake on my .300 remington ultra mag also. Decided i'm gonna just slap a limbsaver recoil pad on their and call it good
-
When I had my Long Range Rifle built (300 RUM) I went with a 30" Varmint bbl fluted and had a muzzle brake put on it. the rifle weighs in at 13 lbs. The sharpness of the recoil has been damped out and it is not violent enough to break your skin should you creap in to close to the scope.
In '85 I had a custom 300 Wby built on a LH M700. That rifle has a 27.5" Douglas bbl that is sporter weight and no muzzle brake. This rifle weighs in at 11 lbs. I have received a magnum eye brow more than once from this puppy over the years, it is much more violent in recoil.
My brother recently had a muzzle brake designed by Shawn Carlock of Defensive Edge put on the M700 factory original 300 RUM. The nice thing about Shawn's brakes is that they vent out the side and not downwards, therefore you do not throw a bunch of dirt up in the air when shooting from the prone position. Plus, Shawn's brake have a tough look to them, that send a very clear non-verbal message.
-
The next time I get a brake, I'm going to make sure that it doesn't have vents on the bottom. I got one for a Tikka .300 WSM - it doesn't kick particularly hard, but it jumped awful bad (scoped myself with it) - and didn't consider the vents on the bottom. I ducked down to shoot a grouse under a tree limb and debris jumped all over the place when I pulled the trigger.
-
brakes are great if you were ear protection less felt recoil stay on target better i am putting one on my 300 win mag when i save up the money most are not cheap i am looking at 220.00 for blued
-
Brakes or breaks, either one, they are not for me. Too danged much noise, to easy to get damaged hearing just from shooting at game. If your that scared of the recoil, it aint gonna change much by putting one of them on your rifle. Instead shoot a rifle with less recoil that you can shoot well and save everyone around you their hearing. I Know of a gal in Ak who works as a guide, shoots handloaded 250gr bullets through her 338 win mag, refers to those wholes on the front of the barrel as "sissy slots". Nuff said. :twocents:
-
My ears are still ringing from shooting my 300 Win Mag with a muzzle break on it a month ago. Usually there is little to no time (and it is the last thing you are thinking of) when out hunting an an opportunity presents itself. Muzzle breaks do work, but at what expense... Your hearing. Don't be the spotter sitting next to a guy with a muzzle break. WOW! That hurts. :bash:
-
It is easy to do because they don't kick that bad. So they kick a little more than some of the other cal. So what? It isn't bad and all and certainly doesn't hurt. I don't ge what all the fuss is about with a little extra kick. Just shoot the dang thing for a while and you will understand that it is nothing. Unless of course you don't have a good recoil pad on it and it does hurt you. If that is the case, please people, put a recoil pad on it.
I shot my elk this year with a 200 gr bullet from my 300 rum and I was sure glad I had ever bit of gun I had.
Elk are big criters and are better treated as such. Big Bullets out of Big Guns. Of course you can shoot them with smaller cal. and they will die too. But I like to see them bite the dirt when I pull the trigger. :twocents:

I have a 300 Winny that came with a boss/brake. I'll tell you what... I HATE shooting it because of the noise...I also HATE hunting with it, because I dont like to hunt with ear plugs and muffs one!!! :o The other day I took a crack at a wounded deer without hearing protection and my left ear is ringing much more than normal (my ears have been ringing for 15 years.... :'()
However...holy mack... this gun kicks "about" like a 243... I have no idea what it would kick like without the break... but its a pleasure that way...
Noise is unbearable though. I am going to see a smith soon to see about replacing it with a nonvented boss or taking the boss completely off and just having a normal barrel....

No need to see a gun smith, browning sells a solid boss, called the Boss cr (conventional recoil), for your gun..
-
Cool... I"ll google it...
So, have you guys seen the, I think its a savage, that has a muzzle break that opens and closes... that would be cool... while target shooting with your muffs on its open, reducing kick... then when you go hunting, close her up and reduce the boom factor...

When he was 8 my son got a ruger compact 7mm-08 with a muzzle break. Sweet shooting gun. We unscrewed the break for hunting though so we didn't have to mess with hearing protection. With the break and the very short barrel it was the loudest gun I ever shot. The blast was about 12" from your ear.
Real men don't need a break on anything less than a 300 RUM or 300-378. My .300 and .338 win mags both shoot like a dream without a break. Composite stock, standard pad.

Many years ago I bought a Ruger #1 chambered in 375 Holland and Holland and found it to be wonderfully accurate with my hand loads of IMR 4350, Federal Magnum primers, Winchester cases and the Sierra 300 grain Game King Projectile.
I was a happy guy.
Then I stumbled across an ad for Magna-Port which stated once the bullet leaves the barrel; the propelling gasses travel faster than the bullet and may have the tendency to disturb the flight path. By venting those gasses to the sides and away from the base of the bullet there is less likelihood of disturbing the flight of the projectile near the muzzle. This, in theory, would enhance accuracy.
Being the fellow I am, I sent my prize off to Magna Port. They did their job and when tested over the bags, that rifle will now tear one 40 caliber hole at 100 yards and a one inch group at 200 yards (cold barrel please).
Now, I am a really happy guy.
I never noticed the difference in loudness at the range (hearing protection) although the blast tends to tear insulation off of the ceiling when fired from under a covered shelter.
Yes, I use the rifle for deer, snakes, coyotes and crows (everybody gets the same medicine...). In the field my hearing never seems to be unduly abused.
Another thing about the Magna Port process, it will never become loose, unscrewed or misaligned.
I am sold.
-
I USED TO OWN A .300 WIN MAG WITH A MUZZLE BRAKE... I SHOT IT AT THE RANGE A FEW TIMES, IT WASN'T SO BAD, THEN I SHOT IT ONCE IN THE FIELD WITHOUT HEARING PROTECTION.
THEN I TOOK IT TO A GUN SHOW AND TRADED IT.
TRUE STORY.

I don't even notice mine but my wife hates it! When I say shoot or I'm going to she should really listen :chuckle: :chuckle:

Well I got a .338 Win.mag and with a Gentry muzzle brake . The holes are angled toward the front of the gun which greatly reduces the blast backwards. It is a joy to shoot and I always shoot at least a box and a half of shells when I go to the range and shoot in a tee shirt. Now when I shoot 3 times with my 30;06 I am already feeling it. So no flinching and it feels like a 243 kicking. My boy used it at 13 & 14 years old to kill his 2 Elk.
-
i shoot a .338 WSM savage (6.5lbs) no break. it is great in the woods (were if you need more than two shots you dont need a gun). sighting it in can be rough on the shoulder, expecially sighting out of the box when you go through a box shells. my buddy shoots .300 WSM w/Break and the benefits dont out weigh the costs to me, of course i have him by at least 75 lbs. to me a bruise is easier to deal with for a couple days, when what i have left of my hearing is gone, its gone.
-
Mine dont bug me much and the gun is a joy to shoot. Anyone around me hates it.
-

Have you ever thought about a recoil system? i put a bumpmaster recoil system on my .338 winmag, and I can shoot all day, shot about 100 rounds one day at gophers :chuckle:. awsome system, reasonable price, easily put on and take off, oh and my wifes shoots the .338 like its nothin.

I had a muzzle brake put on my .338WMag. I shot it 'as is' for 15 years with hundreds of handloads but in the last year since I put the brake on it, I shoot it more, more accurately, and like it much more. I don't really care about the blast since I'll have my ear muffs(head set)on every time I'm shooting it at a range and will(should)everyone else. As for shooting it in the woods at elk. Never hear nor feel it anyway. I do know that it now kicks on a par w/my 30-06 and I really enjoy shooting it.
-
My model 70 300win with a break is like shooting at 223! And besides I'm married so I already have hearing lose lol!!! :)
-
I have shot the .338, 300 wby, 300 wsm and 300 wm and a 375 h&h and i can honestly say that the 300 RUM is a powerhouse and the felt recoil is noticible over these other cartridges. I know that recoil pads and rifle weight is a factor in this argument. I have been up in the air about brakes but if my rem 700 300 RUM felt like a .243 i would be happy but knowing me i would not take the time in the field to put in ear plugs therefore i would be deaf.
A good friend of mine had a sub 1/2 moa rem .270. He loved that rifle. He had extra cash so he put a brake on it. It shot 3-4" groups after that and he spent several hundred dollars on ammo testing accuracy and many hours at the range. The gunsmith messed up the crown. It was recrowned but my friend still hates the rifle now because he has no confidence in it. The ol saying comes true "if it aint broke dont fix it".
-
You all are talking about brakes on girl guns. ( Just kidding ) I went to a long range shoot Fathers Day. The guy I know that put it on and had a 338 Lapua with a brake. I was sitting about 10 feet from him off to the side. He let that thing off and wholly crap, damn thing nearly knocked me over. I liked it.

Did you realize you were yelling? Maybe it's the hearing loss from shooting witha break?

NICE! didn't read the article did you  i shoot a 300rum and have a DE brake on it. it does help me do everything i need to with the rifle INCLUDING SPOTTING MY OWN SHOTS! for the db price, carrying a set of earplugs is well worth picking up the bullet trace.
-
I cut mine off my Remington 308 VTR got tired of not being able to hear lol. Id say cut them off
-
Just curious...are ported barrels considered to be brakes? They seem to have a similar function. I recently bought a Marlin 444P one of the early versions with a ported barrel and haven't shot it yet. Just wondering if anyone has had experience with this rifle and whether it has the noise problem that a muzzle brake would have. I really wanted to hunt with this rifle and don't want to have to wear ear plugs all day for the possible one (or two) shots at game.
Guess I will find out myself in a few days when I get my new toy to the range.
-
They are still the same as brakes. They have their +'s and -'s over thread on brakes. http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=11&ved=0CHEQFjAK&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.chuckhawks.com%2Fmuzzle_brakes.htm&ei=qtn6ToGpD4eaiALK28T3Bw&usg=AFQjCNE-oKwdATri-3sNg3IhsNBBjVM9ew

Sorry Wraithen I realized it after I typed it and forgot to go back and fix it before I posted it...

No worries, I never even saw it :chuckle: I was defending my honor from you in a different topic.

I bought a new used browning BAR 300win mag from an old guy. I love shooting it. it has a muzzle brake on it. first year I took to B.C. for a moose hunt, the guide looked at it and asked me "can the guide buster be removed?" as the shooter, i never noticed the noise and side blast, but he wouldn't stand anywhere but directly behind me
-
I get instant headaches if I'm in the blast cone of those things. My brain's so small in my big head so I can't take the extra vibrations :chuckle:
-
i have a 338 win mag and am debating putting a brake on it. it has the hard recoil pad on it so i think i'll try a limbsaver first. i was curious if anyone has magna-ported their rifle? is the sound from a magna port just as bad as a brake?
-
Hi, im new 2 this posting thing, but I wuz just reading on the possibilities, & I could not disagree more with the guy who has a 300 WSM & wuz wanting 2 know if he should get it braked!! I have a Ruger M77 300 WSM, with a Leoupold 4x12 Gold Ring. It's my favorite rifle. It's a tack driver!!! I have killed anything out 2 300-350 yds. I would not recomennd it. I do have a 300 WM. It definetly needs a Brake, I would not like 2 shoot it without a Brake. Just some food 4 thoughts. Any comments back would B cool!!!
-
Brakes are good, just loud. Wear ear plugs and you'll be a happy camper.
-
my hearing has been severely damaged by a muzzle brake on a 7 mm. also chainsaws and tractors. in the 50s and 60s hearing protection was not used much. gave the 7 to a grandson and got a 257 and muzzy. mike w

I like the old Vais acorn shaped muzzle brakes. They work awesome. My brother's custom 338 WM that I built him kicks less than an 06 with the brake on, and a good Decelerator pad.
-
Had my first experience with a muzzle brake yesterday at the plantation range in Whatcom County. I don't know what caliber he was shooting but when that gun went off, even with mega ear protection, it made my ears ring. Luckily he didn't shoot a ton but I definitely had to pay attention to when he was shooting so it didn't mess up my shooting.
-
Brakes are very loud if you are ALONGSIDE the gun.. from behind, not as loud as you would think.
-
I do not see the point of putting a muzzle break on a 7mm, however I can see the application on an 8 mag, 274 winchester, 410 rigby (elephant gun), and the 338/374 series for those who do not like to have their shoulders abused, the muzzle break makes a hell of allot of noise, more so at the range to you fellow shooters (that's just a part of shooting). my resolve is if you do not like the way the gun recoils don't buy it. There is no sense buying a gun that make a shooter flinch because the recoil is to much to handle. buy what you are comfortable with you will be happier in the end do your research find a fellow shooter that is willing to let you shot the caliber you are interested in and see if you like it.
-
My 308 Norma has a brake and its load !!!! Everybody in elk camp knows when I shoot
-
would a muzzle brake help or be dumb on a 300 win mag? i love my 300, but, I also happen to love high grain ammo :chuckle: but .. it kicks so hard im not as accurate as I am with other guns.
-
I have a brake on my 300wm. I can shoot it all day long. Recoil is great. Noise is not great. People have actually bitched about it at the range. If you are prone the dirt flies a little too. I love it though

You shouls check out the web site NO-KICK, ordered a a recoil reducer for my 338WM and can shoot all day with no flinching
-
I have two rifles with muzzle brakes not counting the AR's. A Browning BAR .270 with the BOSS and a Winchester model 70 in .270 that I had a Que Industries brake installed. I broke my shoulder many years ago and I am really sensitive to recoil and can't imagine firing any high powered rifle without some kind of recoil reduction. I was at the range with my Win .270 prior to the brake and had it in a bad spot on my shoulder and it nearly crippled me for two years. Yes, the brakes make it loud to by standers and I am sorry for that but for my own comfort I choose to have a muzzle brake. The BAR BOSS makes the .270 recoil like a .243. I am looking at fitting all of my larger caliber rifles with a brake or Magna Port or some sort of recoil reducing system for my own comfort. Hearing protection is easy and cheap and at the range all are required to have it anyway!
-
my buddy put a break on his 300wm and it shoots like a heavy .308  . seeing impact through the scope is nice too !
