Figured I’d start this thread, haven’t seen one yet.
Here’s my second day archery buck. Snuck into him on his bed, 20 yards frontal while he was snoring. He never took a step. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230902/63364f826c53f000f3f872dade8c0dfc.jpg)

Swing and a miss for me tonight, deflected off a branch on a spike buck. Clean miss recovered the arrow deer was unharmed. Bent blade on the broad head no blood no hair, first shot I have had at a deer in 7 years I was just happy to get out and hunt and see critters

Well my Uncle has a backhoe that after I shot it on his property, we used it to hang it up to skin and bone it out. Worked great.
-
Had a true giant come by at 20 yards last night. Main frame 5x4 muley with eye guards. One of the dozen does around him busted me and that was that. He was light sparring with another buck at 20 yards and I figured they'd be distracted so I tried to draw and she saw me move and raised hell. :bash: :cryriver:

Thats pure old fashioned buck luck! The ladies do a good job of protecting the bucks

Wa buck not the outcome I wanted as coyotes picked it clean in a day. Bittersweet end of WA deer for me. Pissed and I guess happy I turned him up. Woulda never looked where he was recovered. Learn something new.

C'mon, give us a better luck at that rack! Is it a 6x6 with a little trash? Sorry it didn't turn out the way you hoped.
-
Bummer 😕 sorry that happened to you. Bittersweet no doubt, were you able to recover any meat at all?
-
I'd be coyote hunitin around where you recovered him, *censored*, shoot em all, *censored* those things, make it personal.
-
I watched him run about 40 yards down off the ridge, I couldnt find blood after that so I did the logical thing as it was down hill with heavy cover I grid searched 9 miles in total 500 yard hillside brought a dog and wife flew drone. Buck after I shot must of ran and hooked right and went back passed my stand over a small ridge and down below my stand 150 yards. I walked a road 40 yards past him that day. :(

Bummer, at least youre not wondering for the next year what happened to him and where he ended up.

That's a sad deal huntnnw. He looks pretty mature, I'm sure he passed on his genes.

Man that sucks. But at least you recovered it.
Sometimes recovery is the biggest battle.

Minus the meat of course.

Congratulations everyone! A bit slow this year. Got my first opportunity on a buck this weekend. Turned out to be a very nice two point. He rolled over slightly in his bed when he winded me and it was so funny to see him partially roll over to look back at me with his two arms/hoofs near his chest. That was when it was clear he was only a two point. A really nice one at that unfortunately. Best of luck everyone!

After 5 years of teaching myself how to hunt, it finally came together for me. I shot him at about 10 yards, and got the shot on video via my trail camera. I am looking forward to trying venison for the first time.

Thanks! I saw him a couple times in preseason scouting and kind of wrote him off as a super fork, then I saw him again right before dark on Monday night and confirmed at least 1 legal eyeguard. Then the stars lined up and I tagged him Tues morning!

First muzzy deer. Last day. Didnt make the best first shot regrettably, just caught his windpipe, blood trailed him well over a mile to where he piled up. Got him 1 more time in the ribs on the run when he jumped out of his bed. Happy it ended well
-
Nicely done. A great buck.👍 Thanks for sticking with him.

My son was able to fill his youth tag yesterday after about 2 hrs of hunting. The biggest trophy for me was having him demand to gut it himself and get upset when I helped skin it. He is excited that he can now focus on filling his second deer tag with his grampa while I try and fill my tag. Super proud of the shot he made and how dedicated and excited he gets about hunting.

Although I'm really liking the new 7-08, I haven't settled on a load yet and ranges tend to be longer where I hunt in Idaho which isn't ideal with the fixed 6x on it. I can always count on the Ackley so took it out the other day, only 3 shots needed at 200 yards, 0.84" and done.
Didn't plan on getting a deer today unless it was a decent buck. Mainly wanted to get out and look for elk. Saw two smallish 5 points and two big bulls. Only saw one buck, about 1.2 miles away. Finally gave in and got a spotting scope for this season and it was perfect. I caught a glimpse of a deer moving between bushes, but way too far for the 10x Swaros to tell what it was. Spotter showed a 3x4, I figured why not.
The area I was going to didn't look terrible, half way was flat without having to bust through brush, then hike up a hill, look across the way to the other hill, should be right there. Well I got up there and couldn't find the deer. Got out my phone to look at the brush he was around, couldn't match it up. Different perspective maybe? Did see a big 6 point bull on that hill, perfectly broadside, standing still while eating, and in range. Kept sneaking glances at him while looking for the deer, but where was he? Looked higher up the mountain, a lot farther away and fffffffffff.... I wasn't even close. Still had a long way to go, and then it started to suck.
Eventually got to 466 yards quartering away, dialed the scope, and first time recovering a 145 LRX. Retained weight was 144.3 gr with expansion going from .284 to .567. The 4 mile pack out sucked, but more meat in the freezer. My deer season lasted one day.

Couldn't believe how quiet it was today. First time hunting the opener in years so for some nostalgia I went into where I shot my first solo buck as a kid. I only heard 1 shot the whole day 😬. I did see 2 legal bucks and a band of 9 rams though. I've never seen rams that far west on Chinook pass before so that was neat.

Nice buck huntnnw! My neice shot a nice mule deer buck today too, first deer and she is 12.

Nice bucks y'all - had 3 different mulies in my sights today but couldn't figure out if they were legal so had to let em go. One was wild - just stopped while still hunting to take off some layers and caught a glimpse of white - a bedded down buck! He didnt stick around long - wish this 3 pt min was easier to figure out!

Terrific to see the next generation being brought into the fold and having success.

Nice Bucks everyone.👍
-
This was my dads 55th consecutive hunting season. He decided this was his last year Deer hunting. We enjoyed our time together. Two nice bucks down by 9:30am. I got mine at 8:45am. Dad took a nice 4 point in the field that came from a long ways away. I counted 114 shots in less than 20 minutes. In my 35+ years of hunting; never have I heard that much shooting. It was running with about a 30 wide giant 2 point that had a third point on its right side. Some guy driving down the road shot the big buck and my dads buck ran at least 3 miles from where it started before my dad dumped it up on top in the wheat field. Drug it back to the truck at 78 years old. He grabbed me in the bottom and we were back home by 6:30pm opening day. I would have liked to have stayed another day or two, but it was a great way to end 55 years of Deer and Elk hunting. A lot of memories.

Just got my first ever deer today, thanks for everyone posting here and giving motivation to keep going out!
Just a small spike but definitely happy about it as a first deer and being able to eat some good meat! Sadly didn't get any pictures since I managed to slice my glove open while learning how to gut him & got covered in blood.

Wife got it done on her first buck this morning! 350 yard shot on his bed right in the neck. She threaded a needle and made an awesome shot! Best part is me and both kids were right next to her the whole time, and we were sitting 150 yards from where my daughter got her buck exactly a week ago: (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20231022/921644d0942efc53fcfc5b05996e71a8.jpg)

I heard the story of this buck, it’s a great deer and a great person. It was good to meet you, I’ll look you up next year. Personal reasons kept me limited this season.

Yeah we got it close to home so assuming it's a BT. A lot of people have said it might have some whitetail genetics. Very lanky.

My son had passed on a pair of spikes 30 minutes prior. He was feeling down and was quite sure he wouldn't see any good deer this year. A bit later, this guy walked right by me and was heading towards the boy so I just let him go. Somehow, my son didn't see him so after a few quiet minutes, I rounded him up and we went looking for the buck. We found him only 50 yards away with his nose up a doe's butt.
A good shot (only God knows how with all that hair over his eyes), a mule kick, and 10 yards of run before he got tired and took a dirt nap.
-
Yes! Congrats to you both on a sweet deer.

The wife got a little buck on the last day. Not very big but he has tons of character. Double main beam on one side. Would have had a double main beam on the other side too but looks like he busted it off. Double hooked points coming off the back of the bases. Cool buck!

Posted in the rut thread, but I'll put it here with the little story. With the weather cooling quickly here and the recent rut activity I've been seeing I told my girls they could skip school Friday if they wanted to go hunting. I thought they'd both jump at the opportunity but only my oldest did (I thought it would have been the other way around). Got a late start to the day after waiting for the tire shop to open to get winter tires mounted for my soon to be driving daughter's car. Made it to the woods at 8:45am and 1/4 mile past the gate we see a doe and a spike. I ask her if she wants to shoot the spike and she isn't really super excited about it, they move into the woods and we move on. It was cold and foggy so I knew glassing cuts wasn't going to be very effective so we headed for an old grassy spur rd with fairly thick reprod on both sides where I've seen good bucks before. We get out and walk a mile or so and I spot 2 does about 80 yards in the reprod. I glass them for 5 minutes or so, they're just hanging out and feeding occasionally. We're about to move on when they both turn and look to the same spot at the same time. I look closer through the binoculars and I see antlers, big antlers through the brush. He was bedded there the whole time. I knew my kid didn't have a clear shot where we were so we move around a little and she gets a tree rest where she says she can see it's neck clearly. I tell her to aim for his neck just below his head. I'm watching through my glass as her shot rings out. I see neck impact and he stands up. I'm like what the heck? I'm telling her shoot again, shoot again. A couple seconds and bang, flop. Does move 10 yards and watch. We get up to him and she says "oh my gosh he's big, and he stinks"! I'm freaking stoked, biggest blacktail I've ever been a part of harvesting. This is her 2nd buck. I said it's going to be real tough to top this one. We get him drug to the road we walked in on and I go get the truck and drive back to them. Got it gutted and loaded up, skinned and caped out by noon. God is good! I've got Idaho in a couple weeks then hopefully can fill our last WA tag the day I get back during extended buck.

Has it always had the double eye gaurds?
Since I first saw him he’s always had a little nub of an eye guard on the front, but this is the first year he had any real growth in that extra one, plus a few smaller 1-1.5” bumps on both sides. Due to the how low the left lower eye guard sits, it makes that base measure 7.5”, the other is like an inch smaller . He also had decent growth on the eyeguards in march when I saw him. I hadn’t seen him again until opening day this year

Had a great season.... I saw 10 different bucks only a few I had shots on. I passed a nice fork the first week knowing there are bigger boys running around and being seen. I am very lucky with 50 acres of private land on Maury/Vashon Island, also being one of the few able to hunt on it! So last Friday morning I caught this very nice boy sneaking around the back of the property and the rest is history....

Very enjoyable season. I spent a lot of hours in the woods on weekends and evenings after work. Was hunting a nice four point that I never crossed paths with. I passed on 11 bucks this year, but with time running short, it was time to put meat in the freezer. Thankful this buck came cruising by my stand this morning.

Lots of blacktails on here thus year. I love it.
I took a shot on this one on the 28th. Trying to get the 10 year old a shot but happened to quick in the thick. He was tired so I was carrying the gun and had a tiny shot window. Rutted up, smelled to high heaven. Was cruising for does, he had just swam a river into the area I was at that morning. From the 27th to the 30th saw a ton of bucks out cruising in daylight in low elevation sw wa. This guy has some mass for his size and looks like a slightly bigger twin from my buck last year that I killed 5 miles upstream along the same river drainage.
Was an amazing hunt to have my boy by me for the first time, just bummed we weren't able to get a shot for my son to shoot. I told him it was OUR deer, not mine. He was extatic about it the whole time. Hoping late buck pans out for his hunt. To top it off got it with a 20 gauge that belonged to a friend that passed unexpectedly almost 2 years ago. Very meaningful hunt all the way around.

This is now why I buy multi season tags. I normally hunt archery but having 3 bucks bigger than I've ever shot get away when my oldest was little cured me of that. Now they get pushed in the dirt and I use there back as a rest. :chuckle:

Very cool. Looks old with that white around the eyes. What kind of call? was it just a can?
-
Thanks fellas, it’s my second one I’ve called in and is the only time buck fever really gets me shaking! First one I ever called in was with a can, this guy I was using a grunt tube set between the doe and estrus bleat settings
I’m not sure he’s a very old buck but rather just phenomenal genes, his body and hooves weren’t as large as you’d expect on a mature/old buck but I hadn’t even thought about how grey his eyes are, does make him look old! I could also possibly be not calibrated after only hunting mule deer the last 7 years and having helped my dad pack out a 340 pounder earlier this season

He was a scrapper too, By far the largest tear in an ear I’ve ever seen

23 year Old son's First Buck!! 409 Yard shot. Going to be tough to top. Couldn't be more proud of him.

Agreed. Anybody who only shows half the deer gets a suspension for sure.

That wasn't there earlier... :dunno: :chuckle:
That doesn't look like the same deer. But now I see that it is just a different angle and looks different. I'll take a self imposed ban for 8 or so hrs... :chuckle:

Thanks for saving me from a ban mountainarcher didn’t have much time last night to be on here
the picture angles do make it hard to tell it’s the same buck, I’ll post some good ones of the euro when it’s done appreciate the positive feedback! After tag soup the last few years with minimal time to hunt I’m thrilled
-
And congrats to all the other successful hunters here as well, everyone’s pics and the rut thread kept me motivated all season long
-
Backcountry Idaho.

Montana trip in the books. Got home yesterday. We went 6 for 6 on bucks. 4 whitey’s and 2 muley’s.
-
Two more
-
Last two
-
One of the kids got this one this evening. Rattled it in and shot it from about 20" Funny because I'd just told him earlier I didn't think the rut was really on yet

Wait.... u can't hunt with an ar, there won't be anything left of the deer🤣🤣🤣🤣. I love it Nice work
-
That’s right! They have no “sporting purpose”
What was I thinking?
Especially with the evil magazine capable of holding more than 10 rounds.

Anything ar14 and under is safe to use. The more ar's you have the more dangerous the gun is though.
-
I filled my late season Blue mountains quality tag last Friday. Took a bit of a tumble off the rocky outcropping behind me and broke 2 tines. Had my pack goats with me to help with the 4 mile pack out.

Very cool. Please do a write up with pics of the goats packing.

Late whitetail. Let him walk yesterday as I know there are bigger, but couldn’t let him walk today. Have to be back to work Thursday so decided to punch my tag.
-
Nice symmetrical and big eye guards.
-
Good work JR. Nothing wrong with that, congrats.
-
Thanks guys....I'm super happy with him. I have not killed a deer in 4-5 years as I am always taking the kids and friends out. We have a couple that are bigger....but this means they will be bigger yet next year.
-
Nice buck JRebel! I'm gonna be looking for the same thing late muzzleloader. I won't have alot of time either. Elk comes first!
-
Hopefully add 1 more to this group if we can get my youngest daughter one during extended buck. Here's my Idaho whitetail, and mine and my oldest daughters WA blacktails.

Idaho whitetail down. Was looking for a bigger one, but this is the first deer I’ve ever called in and he met my three point minimum standard. Frees me up to hold out for a mature buck during late muzzy.

Got this one Friday last week, a really big bodied buck! Was still hunting through some big timber mixed with alder and big leaf maple, saw him looking at me with only his face and part of his right antler visible, by standing up on my tiptoes I was able to see enough is his front through the ferns to put the 12 guage slug right into his jugular, dropped on the spot without even kicking.
-
Any more late quality bucks?
-
Seen this guy a couple weeks ago, checked for him a couple time to no avail. Found him again the last day. Didn’t get to pull the cam he was 80 yards from but hopefully he is on cam. There was a lot of people out early and late season!
-
Some awesome whitetails this year.
My Idaho contribution.

Nice whitetail Brent congratulations
Thanks! You shot a great buck too!

Tagged this after watching him for the better part of a week. I've gotten his offspring a few times but never located the grandfather's core area until now, he never left an area of maybe 4 or 5 sq acres of thick brush during all of the time I was out.
All of his teeth were almost completely gone too, only tiny little nubbins left!
-
A few from this year

More, great bucks everyone

Beauty of a WT. No matter what people say, WA sure can grow some great bucks

Dandy buck Sir5, congrats on getting him killed. Also thanks for the pics and posts along the way, what a stud buck!
-
Smoker! Love the texture and coloration!
-
Got after blacktails for the first time this year and had a blast.
-
Stud 2 point. Love it!
-
My opening morning late Muzzy buck. Had a kidney stone drop the next day so I am definitley glad I got lucky and was sitting in the right spot.
-
Does this count as 2023 or 2024? My 10 year old daughter passed hunters safety 2 weeks ago and I found an opportunity for her to take a doe on a damage deer tag. Bought her license and tag and she got her first deer this morning at 130 yards with her 6.5 PRC with one perfect shot! Thanks to a forum member for making this happen, he knows who he is!

I think you should have kicked off the 2024 success thread with your daughters deer!! Awesome job!
-
Congrats an excited to see all her success this upcoming season.
-
Love seeing you get the kids involved. Not sure we’re the mule deer are doing well enough to shoot does but glad there are areas that is still possible
-
Nice work buglebuster. So cool, you bookended the topic and season. Congrats to you guys.
-
Most excellent!!! Love seeing your girls get out and get some critters! My little huntress is only 4 but counting the days tell she can start hunting!
-
Great stuff. Congratulations to you both.
-
Awesome job dad. My favorite part about hunting now is getting my kids on critters. The satisfaction it brings be trumps harvesting an animal myself. Don't get me wrong, I still like to get them myself.
-
Nice work!!

Real late to the party...
Nice buck, 8-9 he would have been something to see.👍
-
Sadly we lost most of the meat. He had a pretty bad infection from a laceration to the chest inclusive of a ball of puss the size of a baseball. He was severely underweight and his front quarters where mostly bone with very little meat on them at all. It's sad to see how brutal nature can be sometimes, but I'm taking the mental route of "well I hopefully saved him from an agonizing winter and possible slow death"
-
Nice buck!

I haven't been on here in awhile. Here is my 2023 Buck

Nice buck Beast. Love the extra beam.
