One week out! Who is going westside?
I have multiseason and will be spending archery season over there
-
West side here! :rockin:
-
Me!
-
I will be out on the Olympic Peninsula again. Maybe this is the year for a true Rosey hog.
-
East, and/or WY.
-
Wyoming first and then muzzy here, maybe end up with two, but most likely just a Wyoming bull.
-
looking forward to alkali quality bull this October
-
Made it out for the Oregon opener this weekend and was able to make it happen with my pops! The packout damn near killed us and i had to send an SOS "need pack help" message to a buddy who was 2 hours away. He dropped what he was doing, drove out and climbed into the grind with us and we got it out by 2am.
The old man did great and was still kicking ass the whole way!
-
congrats! nice lookin area too
-
That's because he ain't old yet.
Congrats
-
Super shootin!
-
Opening morning cow. Shot her at 9:30 gutted, skinned and hung and was to my sons baseball game by 3.
-
Opening day bull, spike with a broken antler. When I saw him walking toward me I noticed the right antler was sagging way down. I coaxed him into 30 yards and made him hang out long enough to give me a great broadside shot. When I recovered him, his antler was still attached to the skull but I believe the skull was fractured near the antler base. I figure I may have helped him out a bit, but elk are super tough and he likely could have lived a long life with a funky antler if he hadn't walked into bow range. Good luck out there to all hunters this season!

Do either of the first two shots on those bulls look too far back. I just started archery hunting and wasn’t sure. They’re obviously both dead so maybe the kill area is bigger than I thought. 🤷♂️

Not at all. Hugging the crease is asking for trouble. I like 6" behind the crease. Middle/middle is a dead elk every single time.
-
Agreed with Karl, unless i'm within 20 yards and he's fully broadside I'm aiming about ~6-8" back from the crease and going for the double lung shot which is just as lethal. Save this image attached - It shows you how large the vital zone actually is. Its helped me plenty of times when trying to figure out where my arrow landed
On the second bull, which is mine, he was slightly quartering away from me so even though it looks back the broadhead exited near the front shoulder on the right side.

This is funny to me because right after the shot I had assumed I hit leg bone, as my shot looked too forward! The arrow did something funky, broke off on the way out, I found only shaft and head no fletching. I could have held 6” back and had a dead elk AND a good arrow! Lesson learned.

I agree with you, and disagree with those who say to shoot farther back. The chest is quite small compared to the gut in all ruminants, and the heart and great vessels are VERY far forward. Shoot for the apex of the "V" of the scapula and humerus.
-
Recently got a tcam pic that shows the bone structure pretty well for shot placement . Congrats to the successful elk hunters so far!
-
Lewy that is an awesome image 👍
-
And your drawing skilz are awesome too.
-
Beautiful drawing. Your arrow should be in the "V." (Note: the V is sideways, made by scapula and humerus). The closer to the vertex of the V, the faster it will drop (basically). Broadside or quartering away, if your arrow is at the vertex of the V, you're going to watch it fall. An arrow there will generally go over the top of the heart, transecting the aorta and pulmonary artery as they leave the heart. Other than decapitation, there is no more rapidly fatal injury.
-
Lewy that is an awesome image 👍
:yeah: you can see the bone structure in the far calf as well. Great photo.

Store bought sauce of your liking. I cut the loins to a size that would marinate more of the meat and cook faster to not dry out. Put the meat and sauce in a bag in the fridge for 3 hours because that's all the time I had but over night would probably be even better. I cook on a webber and always half coals half indirect heat. I cook over the coals for my color and char liking then onto the indirect side with the lid on til done to temp. Pulled them off and rest under foil for 5 or 10 minutes to finish. They were a huge hit.
-
lewy, things look tough your way, calf especially, normal?
-
Been noticing that the elk seem thin, couple really thin ones.
-
Those are some nice looking elk, guys. Congratulations.
-

Noticing some thin ones as well on the coast. That dry May weather didn't do them any favors as the summer forage hasn't been great. Hopefully we have a mild winter.
-
Seems a little slow this year
-
My missed spike and consolation prize. :(
-
Seen a nice bull on the top of someone's truck yesterday afternoon on 410. Congrats to whoever stuck him.
-
Saw a hog in a pickup bed up at the Nez Perce Express gas station out of Winchester on Tuesday. Native guys bull. It was BIG! Sorry no pics...
-
Congrats on the elk so far! Been a grind for Roosevelt but hoping to post here soon ;)

What is the square thingy your bows are on?

Had a ton of call ins and encounters this archery season, just never the right shot opportunity on a bull. So close so many times, a little frustrating but what a blast. Sunday came with an early encounter on a bull that didn’t work out, several hours later we were on another one. Same result, no shot opportunity, we ended up splitting the herd up incidentally and hunkered down on the bench they were on cow calling softly. One of the lost cows came back in and I decided it was time to put some meat in the freezer. My bull streak is over but very happy to tag a cow.
-
Sounds like you had a really good season! Nice work
-
Congrats lewy.
-
@Rugergunsite308 You got him on that STEEP south slope huh? I hunted that tag for cows a couple years ago. Super cool spot, but man that's a tough hike!

Yep! Up near castle peak. Him and a whole herd of cows turned that ash hill into a dust tornado post shot.

Congrats to you all. Way to knock some down and some good looking critters too.

What is the square thingy your bows are on?
If you were talking about the mudflow bull picture, its a stump. Then a binoharness, then the bow with a pink phelps call topping it off.
-
Wyoming general tag. 30 yard shot, took two steps and then crashed. First elk, beyond stoked
-
Congrats JP !! Nice bull , the first is always the best

Congratulations JP!

Nice work JP!!

Congrats JP! I remember how I felt when I got my first elk and it was just a spike. I still get just as excited over a cow.

I’m definitely not an elk hunter so this was an experience. Buddy killed a bigger bull. 2 bulls in 4 days and 1.5 days spent just packing meat. I am completely exhausted. New appreciation for dedicated elk hunters! Wyoming.

That's a beauty jjhunter. I would say I sympathize with you but I've been working on elk hunting for 6 years now and haven't harvested one soooooo... NO sympathy for you!
Congratulations though!

Wyoming General unit.
Nice and wide.👍
-
Thanks boss. Very fortunate to be rewarded with this bull. Warm weather and heavy hunting pressure made for some tough hunting. Spotted a group of 4 bulls on my last day of hunting and had to bomb 1500’ down a rock slide ridge to get into a cross canyon position. With 10 minutes of legal shooting light left I was able to get it done. One of the hardest hunts of my life…or maybe I’m just feeling my age.

Pretty sure that’s a Nooksack bull that tribal hunters killed. Had a friend with a muzzy tag that was after it and then it got killed by tribal hunters.

What an amazing hunting season. Been blessed. Went to Alaska and got a moose. Went out in Idaho to scout, not really even meaning to get a deer yet, and got a decent 3x4.
This morning parked at a Black Friday sale parking lot trail head, hiked my ass off, got passed by four people on horses only to pass them back as it was getting light. Went to my spot, took a quick peek over the ridge with my bare eyes, didn't see anything obvious so went back to my pack to pee. Was going to change shirts but turned around, saw an elk on the next ridge with my bare eyes. Grabbed the Swaros, bull! Grabbed my rifle and range finder, moved up, ranged, waited for him to turn, quartering away at 433, BAM! He hobbled and spun around broadside, BAM! Double lung, done. Elk season lasted maybe 3 minutes.
On the next ridge was a good herd with a big bull and couple smaller bulls. Didn't care, so many people out I took the first shot I had. He's a 1x2 and will be great eating. After I got him the herd moved down, not up, and from all the shots I heard I'm guessing a few of them fell too.
Pics to come.

My muzzy spike and the daughters modern spike from this morning. Her 3rd bull in 4 years and she wasn’t able to hunt last year. She’s on a good roll.
-
The Limhangerslayer family is definitely surpassing the 4% elk harvest odds. You guys are consistently taking down elk in spike only units. Well down! And congratulations to your daughter on her 3rd elk!

These Arizona bulls really make me want to draw there! Congrats to you both and to all the others finding success back home. Hoping for an MT meat bull in a few weeks.
I relocated from Roy, WA to Phoenix, AZ in 2021. I still hunt Washington, but started hunting Arizona. You can hunt AZ year round for something. Big Game into late February 2024. Very difficult to get drawn for any of their permits. Even a doe and cow permit is difficult, and they are giving out many permits. I would say equal to a Bull permit in WA for a buck or bull permit. AZ Fish and Game told me they had 33% more draw applications in 2022, than in 2021, because so many people want to hunt AZ.

Arizona - 2023
I seen one like this in the back of a silver or white GMC or Chevy about 6 weeks ago driving south on the 17 into Phoenix. Antlers everywhere out the sides. I was happy for the hunter, knowing the effort it takes. Congratulations 🎈🎉🎊. Real cool.
-
We took the opposite approach - with 20+ hours of driving from Arizona to Washington we were being as covert as possible. Blanket over the rack, truck top as low as we could make it go. All you could see was a cooler
With all the stories of antlers getting stolen we weren't taking any chances. First time in my life I haven't displayed it on the way home but i think that was the right move

Day 4 brought this guy in at 25 yards along with a bruiser bull some smaller bulls and a few cows.
-
Got it done during archery season in Oregon. He came in fired up and screaming with his back 3 tines broke off on his right side.
-
Filled my rimrock cow tag the first day of the cow season down in a hell hole, if hes reading this, i wanna give a huge shoutout to the fine feller and his wife and kid, who my old man and uncle ran into. He guided them up the mountain to where i was. Helped me finish the butcher job, hopped right in and carried a quarter out so we didnt have to come back. His wife even insisted on carrying my rifle on the hike out. You were a godsend man. Also huge props to my 70 year old dad and my 60 year old uncle who both hopped in and packed meat, they did an awesome job themselves.
-
What an awesome story. Glad you got to have that hunt with your family and just as glad there were good people around to help and share the experience with too. Nice looking elk too!

Idk if there’s hoof rot in the NE corner but they all looked good, his whole body looked great besides that horn! I guessed something must’ve happened to him last spring or summer when they were still soft

another great year, makes me 8 in past 11 seasons. all modern/western public land bulls. Was quite tough this year, not the numbers of past seasons. Could be hoof rot/ predation moving herds away. Way fewier animals harvested than seen in years past .

Sealed the deal on a smaller 5pt on the last day of Montana's season (Sunday). Add that to a small three point buck earlier in the week and I've got a lot of meat processing to do - glad to be done hauling meat though!

Thanks to good friends, I was able to tag this west side rosie earlier this year. not the biggest bull in the woods, but beautiful color.

Had a great day filling my late season muzzy cow tag Wednesday. Hiked 10 miles in the pouring rain, found a great set of sheds just to shoot an elk 30 yards above a road next to the truck on my way out.

Cant be as hard as it was for my buddy and I many years ago. Had a Chevy love with a canopy on it. We shot 2 bulls and loaded them both whole into it. We were trying to figure out why we loaded the spike first and the big bull last!
Anymore it hurts to just load an elk whole in my open truck bed. Time to start using methods other than man power! :chuckle:
