Title: A piece of history
Post by: Born2late on September 05, 2023, 11:13:43 AM
A elderly lady that was a contractor I knew years ago called me because she’s cleaning out her garage. She was telling me about her grandfather being a government trapper in Iowa and South Dakota, and all the pictures she had of him with his furs and how he would go into the courthouse to get paid for them. She had this picture of him with the trap. It’s a bear trap he used. She still has the trap and gave it to me because she knows I enjoy stuff like this and she has no one to pass that stuff onto. It weighs 20 pounds! Her husband repainted it all flat black because they had it sitting in the house and she didn’t want it all Rusty. Debating whether I keep it like this or strip it and make it look like it’s used. It says S new house number 5 Oneida on the pan with  another word after it that is worn down.
Would have been neat to know and talk to him, by her stories he sounded like a awesome man

So I did some research and apparently this is a s. Newhouse Oneida community n.y.
It is the pre patent model so that puts the date made from 1895-1911.
Pretty cool reading about these things, I’ve never looked into them to much even though I’ve trapped for years

Very cool piece of history.  I have always wanted a bear trap like that but I am always a day late or a dollar short.....
