Title: GPS advice - stand alone, not cell phone
Post by: Westside88 on September 11, 2023, 11:09:08 AM: I'll start by saying, that I seem to have an uncanny ability to buy technology right as it becomes obsolete. So, I thought I'd see what kind of advice I can get regarding a GPS unit. What I really want/need is the ability to see a bird's eye view of where I am and where I'm trying to get. I hunt a lot of river bottoms and flats that are extremely easy to get turned around in and miss the mark for where to head back.

I think what I want would have a built-in radio that could also locate hunting partners, the ability to mark spots to return and be able to see a bird's eye view (preferably like a google earth type view) I probably won't use one to interface with a PC much, but I suspect that's pretty common.

One that's caught my eye is a Garmin GPS map 66i. I appreciate any thoughts or advice on this topic, thanks.

My 655T has a 5 watt radio, texts between established friends, locks on to satellites super fast, pins yours and your partners' locations on the map, synchs up with a desktop program and your phone, has routing, and makes fried bologna sandwiches for you at lunchtime. If you want a handheld that plays well with others, a Rino is excellent.

Post by: GWP on September 11, 2023, 05:10:11 PM: Wife and I have had a few sets of Garmin's. There were times I would direct her out from being ‘lost’ with the tracking handhelds. The last set we had were too big, heavy, and had too many options we did not use.
If we needed them again, I would still look at Garmin first.

2nd this. My whole group has the rinos and they are great.
