Title: Outfitter Ethics

The local Rimrock outfitter has 1 guided camp and 2 drop camps in a 3 mile section of the Crest Trail.
All in the head, along the rim, of the same basin.
Might as well take his hunters to the zoo.
What a joke.

This is a new packer compared to the last bad reviews. But they do the same crap. Used the last one to pack elk out because I backpacked in there, showed him where I was camped as that’s where the meat and head was. Hiked up the next year to find a full wall tent camp set up in there. I’m 100% sure he did not know of the spot until I showed him. Really pissed me off. If you’re still in there pm me and I can tell you some spots to get away from those guys.

The morning we were all back in town and waiting for our airline flights out we were staged in a conference room so we could vacate the hotel rooms. Three of the four groups were DIY. One was fully guided. One group got to their lake 6 days in advance so they could get there before anyone else. The day before the hunt opened float planes brought in two other groups and staged them about one mile on either side. They were pissed. Another group, on the same lake as us, but about a mile down and the other side of the lake, had a plane come in and drop another group off just 1/4 mile from their camp.

We had four potential spots planned, and each of those four were taken so we went to the next, to the next, to the next... and finally just went to an unplanned location.

On the one hand public land is fair game. On the other, if someone is there just move on to another place. I know I'd be fuming if someone dropped a camp near me on this hunt, and that's why we just kept going and moving on. Were we inconvenienced by having to move on, fly further each time, pay more $$$... absolutely. But have some decency not to intrude on another's hunt and just keep going until nobody else is around. (Not directed at anyone here).

We have had a lot of different personal experiences from that person. I have a lot of stories. But to be respectful of the site moderators I will leave those stories off of here so the site doesn't get backlash.

I would have to dig very deep to hold my tongue and stay positive if I was there that early to claim my spot and had two people dropped right next to me. We are going to Alaska for a diy moose hunt next year but we are doing a float trip in hopes of avoiding this. Unfortunately I’m sure we will see other people on the river but there is no roads so everyone will have to fly in like we are and at least we can always float down the river a few miles out of the 100 miles we are going and be in a different area. What were the success rates of the groups you mentioned? Hopefully they all didn’t pay a bunch of money to get dropped off on a big camping trip together. Would love to see a picture of your moose or was there a story posted on here I missed?

The group that got in early saw a bunch of moose prior to it opening, including a 60"+ bull, but they all disappeared a day or two before it opened. The group on our lake said they didn't see any bulls, just 70+ grizz. I got my moose, a buddy went after two on two different days, but didn't connect.

Heard the season in that area was extended for residents due to a low harvest.
