Title: Peaches Ridge Help
Post by: mburrows on September 29, 2023, 06:10:50 AM: I have a friend who’s 12 year old drew the peaches tag. Dad scouted a ton, cams and all but having trouble finding bulls now.

I hate these kinds of posts but figured I’d ask especially since I know dad has been working his butt off all summer and it would be his sons first bull.

I get both sides of it; however, in my opinion no need to tear a guy up looking for help. Karl is a class act and I expected a gentleman's response from him.

Where are they and are they packing in or hunting from a road camp? Tons and tons of area with that tag.

He’s got an October bull tag and they will be base camping but can and will get around well.

Dad has been in there just about every weekend all summer. Trying to do his due diligence to make it as good of an experience as he can for his son.

He’s been coming in from the naches side but can and will bounce around to find elk.

Thanks again for the replies PMs and texts. This is one of those posts that I so often scoff at but this crowd of guys is awesome and I sincerely appreciate the input.

I will share how their hunt goes and of course any photos that get passed along, wish I could be there to help.

Usually from the folks who haven't been around or plan on sticking around and actually contributing to the site. For me, a request from a long standing member who has been a part of the "family" holds significantly more weight. It's more of a call to arms than it is a help request. For those dudes I'm an open book.

My :twocents: on those late October permits is they are generally on the more difficult side but in my opinion, peaches is a diamond in the rough. I've had an archery tag in there and I've also helped on at least a dozen gun rut hunts and the later October tag is my favorite. Bulls aren't very visible that time of year but in a few spots they are as predictable as a summering mule deer. They are gonna feed out on the edge of the timber every morning and every night. Add in a bit of second estrus activity and they will respond to a location bugle from time to time. Glass them up, make your plan for the next feeding time and kill them at your leisure.

Also keep in mind that where the bulls were in July and august is not where they typically are in September. As the rut ends in a few weeks they will head deep and dark into the timber which maybe where your friend had his cameras earlier in the year.

Glass the edges of the burn, pull up satellite images and you'll see small pockets to target off the main roads.

They are in there, but as noted the October tag is the hardest to hunt of the three special permits.

Sad to think what the odds are for today's young hunters to get drawn again down the road when they are starting over with no points. Like most of us, he might not get drawn again for 20+ years. Good to hear his dad is making the most of this opportunity for him.
