Title: Oberhasli goats for sale?
Post by: LDennis24 on September 29, 2023, 09:09:12 PM
Anyone know where to find Oberhasli goats for sale? My cousin wants to start training some for packing.

Not Obers but a guy in Benton City sells Alpines for packing. Trinity pack goats, i've been to his outfit before. Also is there a reason he just wants obers? I have 2 ober crosses and I think they are on the small size. My alpines and lamancha crosses are much bigger.

I have and breed packgoats but am not going to have analysis this coming spring. If I were to be looking for pure ibers, I would go to Linda Berens in Moses Lake. My friend in California breeds hybrids including ober crosses and Alpine crosses that are great. She travels a long way to deliver. I have 3 goats from her.

I asked him why he chose Oberhaslis. He says they are quieter than other breeds and have more try from what he has heard.

I think I’d prefer lamancha/alpine crosses. That is going to get you the largest cross. Obers tend to be on the smaller size. I will have some Boer/lamancha cross kids born this winter. They take on a lot of the lamancha traits and I believe they will probably be a fairly decent cross for packing.

Boers can be very stout! I saw one at the Palouse fair this year that was part bull terrier! 😂

Ya, here’s our bucks. Very stout. We sold the black one for $4000 this summer. Last picture is next to a very large saanen doe, some use saanens for packing too.

Obers have the most heart... I believe their demeaner means a lot... they are a little smaller generally, I have Obers and Alpines and my best lead was an Ober. It's kind of personal preference but atthe end of the day, there isn't a huge difference.

I don't know Linda in Moses, but have heard of her quality goats.

Last I heard Dave at Trinity was selling all of his goats to Mark Warnke.... I have 3 from Dave and wanted more and was told no last year.

Obers are a great breed. They are not typically as tall as Alpine or LaManchas but there are some ober lines that are taller. Obers do have great personalities and make excellent packgoats. Linda Berens in Moses Lake has really nice obers and is who I would go to if I was looking for pure obers.

The guy in my post above is 1/2 ober, 1/4 LaMancha, 1/4 Boer and is not quite 18 months old in that photo. He was about 34" tall and 204 lbs i (on a livestock scale) n yhat photo. I prefer packgoats that are a mix of breeds with hier percentages of Alpine, Ober, or LaMancha mixed with smaller percentages of Saanen and Boer mixed in.

I have 24 goats total with all kinds of mixes and none of them are noisy. Nubians are known for being noisy. All goats are potentially noisy but even the ones I have that scream only do it at feeding time and they have all grown out of that by one year of age.

The gray and black goat below is pure Alpine, 1 month younger than the brown one pictured above. He is about an inch shorter and 25 lbs (he's about 225 now) lighter than the ober, lamancha, Boer cross.

The two pictured below are twin brothers sired by the ober, lamancha Boer buck crossed with my favorite doe who is 5/8 Alpine, 1/4 ober, 1/8 Boer. Those two are 16 months old in the photo.

Here is my biggest doe, an Alpine/Saanen cross (205 lbs) and one of her 6 day old kids and that kid at 6 months old weighing 106 lbs. His color changed a lot which is very common.

I thought I heard he stopped selling to Marc. Who I will NEVER buy goats from and would steer other people away from buying from Marc either.

That’s not true. Each goat is different . My lamancha are the quietist and best packers

If you would like Linda Beren's contact info for good Oberhasli packgoat prospects let me know and I will reach out to her.

Here is a big Saanen doe from Dwite Ashampoo packgoat breeding lines. She is 250+ pounds.

Also posted is a 3 year old Saanen packgoat wether that is 43" at the withers and 295 lbs with up to 2 years of growing left.

There are boers bred for meat and obers, alpines, saanens, lamanchas, etc. bred for dairy and then there are dairy lines of dairy breeds that have the size, conformation, temperament, etc. for packing. You can't just take a Boer meat goat and cross it with a dairy goat and end up with optimal packgoat conformation.

When I called Dave last year... he told me everything was going to Warnke... I didn't call him in 2023... if he is selling to everyone else again... he is a good source.    As far as Warnke... my mama told me not to talk bad about others...

Can't say that I agree with this comment but since my mama told me the same thing yours told you, I won't say more.

There are better sources for packgoat prospects and packgoat information.
