Went out to scout today on the Yakima firing center was advised by the military police to turn my tag back in as all the unit areas will be closed during the duration of your hunt that hold elk.(4000 soldier's just arrived) There is 3 areas open all in the south side of the unit(no elk) Was informed by the game department you only had up until 2 weeks prior to your hunt to turn your tag back in Looks like tag soup.

what units are open and how long are the troops scheduled to be there?
-
I'm holding an alkali B cow tag so I'd really like to know more about this. I still have time, but it's close.
-
I was told the troops will be there until end of November ,Units 6,7 & 10 were open

and 3. I just called. There are elk to be had in all those units. Especially if they start pounding the impact zone. Too late to turn your tag in so keep the faith and go hit it hard :twocents:

It’s been pretty locked down almost all of hunting season! Archery season there was a few days where most areas open….muzzy season there was 2 days where most were open otherwise a few areas in the south were all that was open. From what I heard the troops were arriving this week.

Got here today also. Was told the same thing. Such a great quality hunt. The state should make an exception for the late change on the base. They do with fires.

Should be fun with 90 tags in 4 units.

used to be a bull tag. So dumb the state moved it to quality, especially with the obstacles you have to deal with down there. Good luck either way. Never know what can happen

My son has a youth cow tag for Dec/Jan. He is really looking forward to trying to tag his first elk. Hopefully the military exercise is over by then.
-
With what's going on in the middle east they may be ramping up...hopefully this works out for you all but it wouldn't be shocking if that area got pretty busy....Good Luck

If it is indeed the Japanese troops, they have been coming annually for as long as I can remember. It's normally in September though. This would be pretty late for them.
-
Going to elk camp a week ago, we saw a very large convoy of military vehicles headed east on I90. They were all pulled over because one was broken down…..caused one heck of a mess / backup as people slowed to look at the convoy.

I can verify they weren’t there in September and I can only say they were coming this week by rumor of half ass guard info.

I was informed of the same thing. They wouldn't confirm or deny, but they basically told the Muzzleloader hunters to be there the day that the base opened cause we were probably only going to have one day to get it done. There are elk to be had all over in there though.
-
That is an unfortunate situation; access has always been dependent on military activity and can change day by day. As the footnote in the pamphlet indicates, "Military installation; access may be extremely limited."
I hope you're able to find a time slot to hunt.

Saw 6 c17 and multiple helos headed east the other day. Flew right over my place in a couple waves. I figured a big training wad in the works. Bummer for the tag holders.
-
Looks like my plans just changed! I was planning on being in there starting tomorrow morning.

Daughter has a B tag for Nov 4th I believe.

I just spoke with the wildlife program at wdfw. The guy stated they are looking into this issue and getting in touch with the base because they were unaware of this(probably FJB’s war imo). He said someone will be reaching out via phone or email to tag holder affected by this issue and be given their options moving forward..
-
Sucks but at least there might be some light in all of this
-
Down to 2 open units for tomorrow. We’ll see what happens. 90 tags in 2 units sounds like a blast.

If you put in for this unit thinking this wouldn't be an issue, then that's on you. It says right in the description. It's always been a risk you take by applying there.

There ya go with that “common sense thinking”, not much of that around these days!
-
Spoke with wdfw again this morning. They will give point restoration to rifle alkali permit holders if they post mark their permits by today or tomorrow and return them to wdfw. FYI

It’s good to see WDFW with some “common sense thinking.”

Just returned from the local game department they are accepting turned in special hunt permits for the Alkali as long as they are post dated today

Like Karl said there are elk to be had in all those ranges. Several years ago had the muzzy tag and hardly anything was open. Get out of the rig and hike the canyons. There there. Wouldn’t catch me turning back in a tag in this state!

Nobody asked you to turn in a tag.

Believe me I wouldn't be turning my tag back in either if there wasn't going to be 90 tag holders in 2 open units. you might as well go hunt the general season. That to me is not a quality hunt.

it’s not a quality hunt even if there weren’t limited units open. :twocents:
-
This is why I do not apply for this unit. Lots of elk and big bulls… yes. Deer and big deer yes. But it is not a quality hunt do to the limited restrictions and unknown factors. Yes it says so in the regulations but can’t help but feel for the people who gambled the odds and drew the tags to now deal with this. There are animals to be had but not the quality potential it should be.

Go down to the local army surplus buy some fatigues and blend in with your surroundings.

It looks like there are 175 permits being given out for that GMU.

Definitely more than that. 30 quality bull tags and 5 disabled hunter at least. Plus master hunter and general archery hunter.

True, although the Quality and Disabled permits also include GMU 334. The 175 permits are exclusively Alkali.

When I headed over the Pass going east on Saturday afternoon it was one convoy after the next headed to the YTC. I have never seen so many in one day. Must have passed 8 between North Bend and Ellenburg.

...While visions of sugar-plums (and elk) danced in their heads..

I'd bet he was talking about military convoy's.

Yes, military/troop convoys.

Spent sat to mon looking with what is open now and nothing called and waiting for things to hopefully get better

I think I could hear the artillery shelling coming from the training center last night while I was in the Hanford reach. Long strings of booms like thunder.

you did. My windows were rattling. That'll push those elk out of the impact zone right quick :chuckle:

My daughter has a cow tag. We went and got all our paperwork squared away. Drivers license, registration, proof of insurance. I hand the guy my stuff and my 17 year old does the same. I'm not really paying too much attention. He hands me back my stuff and then hers.....
I asked her why she gave the guy her Blue Cross insurance card...
"He said he needed proof of insurance" :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

Only took me 7 days to finally get that figured out what they wanted. Seemed to change a little every time.

The front office said they're gonna lock most of it back down because they got 3 new busloads of troops. They'll be training until December apparently.

I don’t believe anything that is supposed to happen. They told me it was gonna be locked down for 6 weeks and 9 days later it was back open. Can’t see how 3 bus loads of troops would affect much. That’s a lot less than 9,000. But who knows. Good luck to everyone with a tag still.

I have a tag and I'm still gonna hit it hard. She told me to expect all but 3 units to be closed. Only time will really tell. Hopefully its wide open.

Me and my hunting partner both got cows about halfway through the B season. Only saw one branch bull but quite a few raghorns. I think for the whole 5 or 6 days we hunted we only saw a couple people get out of their vehicle and they didn't walk very far before turning back. We saw fresh sign and the occasional elk in most units but had to burn lots of boot leather to hunt anything productively.
