Hello,
I frequent Ifish.net a lot, but I transplanted from Oregon 7 years ago. I have hunted Washington 3 years, North East primarily.
I have a young son, 14 who surprisingly drew a cow tag for 2410, South Yakima, Units 364 Rimrock and 368 Cowichie. This was his third choice, and I have little experience in these areas. I have been in the Rimrock area in the summer and did find elk. I imagine the elk may move much lower by the season of November 1-12th.
My son was blessed with a cow tag and a buck tag draw in Oregon as well. We just got back from the buck hunt and he was successful and happy as can be. We struck out on the elk so far, but have more time planned over there later this year if I don't run out of vacation.
After striking out on the cow hunt in Oregon last week, I have decided to swallow my pride a bit and ask for some assistance as I was humbled last week in Oregon. The Washington hunt is rapidly approaching. Some people have said hunt the sage, others advise timber. any information folks may have will be appreciated. I may run over there in a week or two to spend some time scouting but it seems animals may move a lot in the next few weeks.
We plan to hunt 6 of the 12 day season.
Thanks in advance. I appreciate it, and willing to share info with others.

Try the lower portion of cowiche milk road in the sage brush. There will be a lot of hunters during the general season but there will be elk down there and a cow should be manageable. Good luck

Cowiche side of 368 access has changed a LOT! guys have gated former green dot roads that now provides them and there buddies private access to a bunch of RMEF and state aquired land. If you want to hunt high go up Reynolds as you wont find gates hindering you. If you stay low on Mill Rd then MOST of the land that used to be Van Wicks and posted is now state and RMEF land that is huntable and will have cows running around. Dont even consider the South Fork cowiche road as a guy with 10 acres from west side placed a gate blocking any access to the HUNDREDS of acres of state and RMEF land purchased before access was blocked for most of us. Just my :twocents: Good luck!!!

thanks to everyone who gave input. Sounds like a challenge for sure, and I learned a great deal in two days that I had no idea about. Good info, if anyone else has more I appreciate it!
thanks!

I want to thank everyone for the help and information given, it was all spot on.
we headed over Friday morning and we're going to hunt 6 days. At first light we found elk, and saw three herds by noon. It was a very exciting morning, elk all around. we had some opportunities, just wanted a perfect stationary elk under 300 yards and almost had it by noon. My son passed on a few questionable positions and I never thought twice about it at the time.
We had lunch, and at 1:00 started a hike up a blocked off old cat road in pursuit of a herd we saw earlier.
We were up a little over a mile up the creek from the truck and we decided to cut across the mountain to gain elevation.
In a freak accident, I slipped and lost my balance, on almost flat ground, a simple slip we have all had, and tried to catch myself but fell perfectly wrong and ended up rupturing my quadriceps on my left leg, and straining my right. Never felt pain like that, horrible experience, i won't give details.
Thank god for my son. He aided me as we headed back to truck, took a few hours. It was tough experience for my son as it was a real PIA to get me out.
A very kind hunter and his wife saw us gimping along and offered aid, they were very nice. i was back to the truck essentially so i didn't take them up on aid. They were so kind and tried to get my son on a cow near the truck but I was done, broken essentially. At that time I knew I had a massive injury but didn't know how bad it was.
Anyway, we headed back to Yakima, went to urgent care and ultimately came home Saturday morning.
I will have surgery this week to reattach my Quad Tendon to the Patella, and months of recovery.
It was a fantastic 1 day hunt. I appreciate everyone on here who helped! Life happens, stay safe, and don't take anything for granted!

Dave, how many days are left in the season for your sons tag?
Edit, nevermind just saw its through the 12th. Sure wish there was a little more time to get your kid your out. I'm sure we could rally a couple guys here to help out. Too bad it had to end the way it did, that sounds awful. Glad your son was there to help you out.

If I wasn’t taking my daughter to Idaho for deer this coming weekend I’d say get him over here and we will try and get him an elk. I’m sure huntwa can round up some people to get him an elk??

Thank you for even considering! All is good , had surgery yesterday and on the mend.
My son has a cow tag for Oregon that runs through year end , and My Brother has generously offered to take my son as I will be laid up.
Thanks again for all the help, advice was spot on! we saw elk from the start!
If I can ever return the favor please ask.
thanks,
Dave
