Title: Rattling blacktails
Post by: ljsommer on October 19, 2023, 10:18:37 PM
Anybody try this? I've heard reports that it works but I never quite knew if that was just a buck coming to investigate a weird sound, or if it actually works in practice.
I've never had two antlers to rattle together (that sounds as dire as "not even two pennies to rub together") but I do now, and was considering packing them in for late season modern.

There’s another active thread on the subject right now. Like two down from yours.

Lots of people do it and a search will turn up quite a few old threads, also.

Maybe some will chime in here but there’s that other thread going so I’d check that out.

I rattle the last week of October religiously. I use a rattle bag and do a couple minutes wait a couple for 10 to 15 min and do it again. I've found that if they are going to come they will be there within 20 or 30 minutes. My best locations have been tops of clear-cuts above timber areas and edges of thick middle age reprod (10-15ft tall) that has some visibility.

Anyone have experience with synthetic antlers? Considering getting these to try next week.

No it isn't.   I've rattled in and killed both, exactly the same way.  I've done it with real antlers and a rattle bag, I've actually had more success with the bag than real antlers, I'm sure due to location and curious bucks near by because I don't think the bag sounds as good.  Reprod patches is the best.

Every time I rattle here (White tails) I get busted by dinks or doe's  :bash:
I think I need to get more aggressive at my rattling, it only seems to be attracting bucks that "identify as doe's" and "doe's that identify as bucks"  :o
