I never get a green light without having to stop first at that intersection. I'll keep my ears and eyes open for clues on the bull.

I thought you were suppose to surrender the head on a salvage permit? Never had the chance to do but looked into it when it first came about and thought I read that in the rules.

I have never salvaged an animal but know of quite a few that have, and they were able to keep the head/antlers.

I also thought you had to take everything, guts and all.
But I'm not familiar with it.
I was under that impression, the whole animal.
Guts must of fell out when that baby got hit. :chuckle: :chuckle:

That was one reason I wasn't interested in salvage permit.
Cause I don't want no guts.
Most likely they wrote whole animal ,so you can't take just the head.

All I want is this neck roast ,I swear. :chuckle:

Yes it does have huge 3rds! Would love to see more pictures of this bull. I have gotten several salvaged deer and elk and you can keep everything. Just supposed load the animal whole, no butchering on the side of the road.

Youre supposed to. Ive salvaged a lot of blacktail and a couple elk, and had a trooper stop once to help when I picked up an elk that was still alive. She asked me to shoot and quarter it, which are both "against the rules".

I think its another one of those things that only matter if somebody wants to complain about it, and even then it doesnt matter that much. Every option is better than paying WSDOT to pick up corpses weeks after they go putrid.

There are different rules for wildlife found dead on your property, and road salvage deer and elk. All parts of a road salvage animal must be removed and may be retained.

Possession of dead wildlife.

(1) Except as authorized by permit of the director or as otherwise provided by this section, it is unlawful to possess wildlife found dead. This rule does not prohibit the possession of naturally shed antlers of deer, elk, or moose.
(2) Except as provided in subsection (4) of this section, an individual may remove and dispose of wildlife found dead on his or her property or an adjoining public roadway. Before removing the wildlife, the individual shall, by telephone, notify the department or the Washington state patrol communications office, and shall provide his or her name, address, telephone number, and the description and location of the wildlife. The individual may remove the wildlife for disposal only, and may not retain the wildlife for personal use or consumption. Other laws and rules may apply to the disposal, including rules of the department of health (WAC 246-203-121). Wildlife removed under this subsection remain the property of the state.
(3) Possession of wildlife in violation of subsections (1) and (2) is punishable under RCW 77.15.130, 77.15.400, 77.15.410, and 77.15.430 depending on the species involved in the violation.
(4) It is permissible to salvage and transport a deer or elk that is accidentally killed by a motor vehicle collision except for any deer killed by a motor vehicle collision in Clark, Cowlitz, and Wahkiakum counties.
(a) Big game licenses and tags cannot be used for the purpose of salvaging motor vehicle-killed deer or elk.
(b) A salvage permit must be obtained from the department within 24 hours of taking possession of the animal. Permits may be obtained on the department's website or at department regional offices.
(c) The entire carcass, including entrails, of the animal must be removed from the road right of way.
(d) Any meat an individual deems unfit for human consumption or unusable animal parts must be disposed of pursuant to WAC 246-203-121. Individuals salvaging and consuming this meat do so at their own risk. The department makes no guarantee as to the fitness for consumption of deer or elk collected under a salvage permit.
(e) An individual may not kill an injured or wounded animal that they encounter for the purpose of salvage. Only a law enforcement officer or individuals or entities authorized by the department may euthanize an animal injured in a motor vehicle collision and that deer or elk may be taken for salvage.
(5) Possession of wildlife in violation of subsection (4) of this section is punishable under RCW 77.15.750.

Yeah no idea Jackelope, I just got the screen shot from my brother and he said he will look again and see if anyone answered the OP on Facebook. It almost looks like it was eaten into by something or if hit the vehicle tore it's body cavity open? Or, or, .... somebody was in a hurry to gut it and throw it on a trailer and haul butt home without someone else posting it on social media!  :chuckle: :dunno:

"...removed from the road right of way..." allows for a lightened load if it's killed adjacent to public land... Might make it easier for some to take advantage of a fresh roadkill.

I know if I was in the economy car and had an emergency knife and poncho, I'd be looking at the Onx! Wife would NOT approve of stuffing everything into the back of the honda!

I put two cow elk in the back of my wifes GMC Terrain on a Harbor Freight tarp one time ! Stuffed a big whitetail buck in the back of a Nissan Pulsar T-top once also.  He poked a hole in the headliner with one of his tines but it was worth it...  :chuckle:

My 2003 Toyota Camry was a hunting MACHINE!  Can't tell you how many deer and ducks were in the back of that thing.

Then I got dumb and bought a truck like a loser

Helped a kid load a big 4x4 Black tail into early 60's VW beetle. Took out the passenger  seat , loaded the deer and thru the seat in on top of the deer.

You’re assuming he didn’t take the animal whole and this picture was taken after it got gutted. You don’t have to put the guts into your garbage can. You just have to remove them from the road.

Very true..

I don't care if someone takes the guts or not.
That's just why I don't salvage.
I'm just assuming that's why the whole animal.
So people don't take just the head, road crew cleanup is nothing.

Did see a guy one time quarter an elk roadside.
Went back by that spot next day, nothing there.
Not sure what he did,but it was gone, all of it.

My understanding is that animal parts like guts laying along the side of the road attracts animals. More animals means more collisions and a threat to human safety. Makes sense. I have taken a deer once in the spring. Just scooped it up took it off a back road and gutted it into the bushes. Always wondered what I would do with an elk. A small trailer like this would be clutch.

Y’all are assuming it was salvaged in the first place. I’m fairly sure that hasn’t even been determined yet.

Correct, nobody knows if it was salvaged. Just looks rough in the picture and the body cavity is open but I have actually seen people cut the diaghram muscle and skin clear back to the rib edges to cool off the body before. Might be the case here.  :dunno:

Guna put a bunch of predator mounts around it to display a realistic view of Washington game management.

My observations on the photo based on all the roadkills I’ve salvaged are.
There is no blood on the trailer on the deck behind the elk so I doubt it was a roadkill.
Everyone I’ve have picked up and drove down a side logging road and gutted then drug back on the truck had a bloody slide mark and hair stuck to the bed of the truck and tailgate. Unless they had a crane to lift it on and off, but there still would be blood running out of the chest cavity and down the boards. When I zoom in it almost looks like the chest cavity blood is dark like it was hung open for a couple days.
It almost looks as if predators ate on it and it is a few days old maybe.

I had thought the whole reason for the points question was to confiscate trophy animals to discourage hitting animals on purpose. Interesting. Good to know for the future I guess lol
