Title: Weiner dogs
Post by: Night goat on November 11, 2023, 09:31:45 PM
My girlfriend has been hounding me for a weiner dog for quite a while, we’re gonna go look at some pups tomorrow, but I was wondering if anybody has gotten one so do cool stuff, it’s mainly a companion for her but we’re outdoorsy and it’s gonna go on a ton of adventures…. I’m kind of envisioning a grouse dog lol but just wondering

A friend of mine had a long haired one that do short distance retrieves. He had a small private pond next to his house where we would sit on the deck and shoot ducks. One down and Molly was off and running.

I’ve never been a small dog person…. We recently lost our beloved vizsla, but I also have a commercial fishing boat now, and a dog this size seems reasonable. We sportfish, hike, hunt, mushroom pick etc, all the woodsy stuff, and while we want another big dog… main goal is just getting her a new friend, but, she is confident in also wanting a dog that can hunt and also fit in a backpack lol. Her birthday is in a few weeks so it’s her birthday present but, I know nothing about small dogs… had a girlfriend with a yorkie once, but that’s about it, although I’ve heard weiner dogs can do some pretty epic stuff

Hard to visualize something not much bigger than my boot being a woods dog lol

Just be sure you ask alot of questions to whoever you get one from about degenerative disc disease and if they have any issues with their hind ends and spinal issues. Dachshunds can have spinal issues and slip disc's easily. Crusoe the dachshund has some great videos on YouTube! My grandmother had dachshunds for years and they are awesome little dogs

I had one years ago. She was up for anything, smart, loyal and fearless. I wouldn’t get one of those super teeny tiny ones, get something with a little girth to them. Have fun.

Not a weiner but a Jack Russell is game for just about anything .

Seems like all my great aunts and uncles had one when I was a kid. Saw one chase a badger down into its hole once. Not sure what all went on down there but it sounded like all hell had broken loose. Dog come back out like nothing. A dog that'll do that is probably good for other game related things.

I'm pretty sure me and everyone of my cousins was bit by one at least once though, so watch for that.

Yeah, the kid biting is probably the biggest thing you’ll have to be careful of.

Thats what i would get. Watch the Foresty Forest youtube channel. He has one, its about 16lbs and climbs mountains with him. When the going gets rough he just stuffs the dog in his backpack, coat or the basket on his e-bike.

Another informed recommendation for Jack Russells. Ours
Bea was around 16 lbs and was a rabbit hunting maniac. Wish I had tried her on pheasants as she was was into busting brush and searching with her nose.

She was also a great trail/mountain, boat, go everywhere dog. She fit in a backpack when the snow got too deep and when she got older and didn't have the stamina for lots of miles. She lived to be 17+ years old and was a great companion

:yeah: They have to remain skinny or their backs will have issues.
