Title: Idaho 2024
Post by: CamoDup on December 01, 2023, 02:03:16 PM
Well who got their Idaho tag/tags today? It seemed to run a lot smoother this year.

I wasn't even planning on hunting Idaho next year but I logged in and had a really good spot in line. Took me 45 minutes to get in so I bought a whitetail tag in a unit I've hunted in the past. I have a buddy in Idaho that lives close to the unit I got so I get to hunt with him again finally!  :IBCOOL:

Got my usual whitetail tag for a unit in adjacent north Idaho.  Not sure how many more years I'll have such luck, but I'm grateful today!

I do really think that one should be able to buy a tag for 1 or 2 (maybe even 3) other people, but not 5+.  I saw quite a bit of that this morning.  Idaho, as others have pointed out, may not care about the unintended consequences of big "group buys", since they get to sell tags efficiently.  They are basically able to reduce several transactions to one, essentially making the buyer a secondary dealer for his/her friends or family.  (I'm not saying it's the best way, just thinking about it from their standpoint).

Good luck to others who got a tag, and condolences to those who came away without.

I had a number just north of 8500.

Everything I wanted for archery elk was gone by 10am.  I didn’t get in until 1030 or so and got my 8th choice for archery.  It is better than WA otc but still not great.  And the worse part is not being able to buy with hunting partners.  If they change one thing I wish it would be that.  You could link up to 3 others on your purchase so that you can all hunt together.

I found it odd that the certain Whitetail tags sold out before the General Deer tags in the same unit. I'm guessing people started panicking and just bought whatever they first seen once they finally got in. There is no reason any whitetail tag should have sold out before the general tag in the same unit.

With that being said, my wife picked up an elk and deer tag, plus I got our daughter a youth deer tag. I decided to sit out this year and focus on them.

I was around 25,000. Picked up a Whitetail tag in a new unit to me. Website ran smooth with no hiccups.

Got my usual elk and whitetail tags. My elk partner, however, got screwed. He had a 6000 number and was kicked out literally 2 seconds after he was allowed in. (He took screen shots.) My wife also had trouble. She kept adding her deer tag to her cart, but it wouldn’t let her buy it. After her third attempt, it logged her out and sent her back to the line. Frustrating for sure…

Got a deer tag for a unit that sounds like mostly whitetail. I have never specifically hunted for a whitetail . Should be interesting.

So, I noticed that too and wondered what happened. But, I actually got back in line and waited after getting my general tag. It appeared as though I was able to buy a WT tag if I wanted too, so I just assumed you could buy multiple OTC deer tags. Not sure if that’s what happened, but I was wondering if some people bought both general and WT tags at the same time? That’s all I could figure logically speaking.

Got a panhandle A tag, excited to explore and see the beauty that Idaho has to offer. If I see some elk I’ll count it as a bonus.

If one is so inclined, most units offer November hunting on a whitetail only tag while the regular deer tag would only offer hunting in October. Also in most cases with a whitetail only tag you can shoot a doe but you cannot shoot a doe with a regular tag so the whitetail tag does have its benefits

I've had a regular tag for several years. You get to hunt the same seasons for whitetails, which runs through 12/1 and includes either sex. The only difference is the regular tag allows you to hunt muleys as well when it's open in that unit.

Totally depends on the unit. The whitetail only tag seasons are different than the general tag seasons for many of them.

Here is a very specific example as we are talking about the panhandle units primarily. In Unit 6, the whitetail tags sold out before the regular tags. I was trying not to name the unit, but who cares at this point since I chose not to buy a tag when my number came up. It's just odd to me that the whitetail only tags sold out before the regular tags.

I think addicted1 might have nailed it as there are way more regular tags than whitetail tags in the unit. Maybe many guys were buying both a regular and whitetail at the same time, thus selling out the whitetail tags at least and 2 hours before the regular tags.

Correct. The unit I hunt has different seasons. Only the WT tag allows hunting in the rut.

That's not true. Many of the regular tags (specifically in the panhandle) let you hunt the first couple weeks of November, which many agree that the 8th -15th is "peak" rut. I'm not saying it is, but there are regular tags that allow you to hunt muleys in what many consider the rut. :twocents:

Yesterday was the last day of the deer season in most Panahandle units.

You cannot buy a 2nd tag until August, so nobody was buying both a regular and whitetail only

I thought the same thing as you Andrew. However, after purchasing my whitetail tag in person, I got on the site and logged in when my online number came up 9:45am PST. It actually allowed me to purchase a regular deer tag even though I had just purchased the whitetail tag. I put the regular deer tag in my cart and even went to checkout to see if it still would allow me to purchase it and it did. At that point, I hit the back button and removed it from my cart.

Yup there was definitely a glitch because a guy I work with bought 2 deer tags because all of the elk tags he wanted were gone. The real question is will they realize it and call him to pick one and refund the other before they mail out the tags?

Yes, I too discovered this after purchasing my general tag. Got back in line and let me purchase a WT tag, I did not actually purchase it as I didn’t really want the tag (added to cart and went all they way to checkout). I was just curious as to why I was noticing WT tags selling so fast in areas that it doesn’t make a lot of sense. Seems that some may have noticed this and possibly taken a general tag and WT tag. If true, it’s pretty easy fix for fish and game if they decide to correct it.

Last year we bought the “Whitetail Only” because we had no intention of being there during the time that the season would be open for Mule Deer. Thought we were being generous.  :chuckle:
