I had my buddy that filmed my 2021 raffle elk hunt up to my cabin this weekend and another member from here to hunt archery cow elk. There were about 300 elk and we just couldn’t get close with that many eyes. Elk were really spooky and wouldn’t stay bedded. They just kept getting up and moving all day.
Sunday morning as soon as it hit shooting light I’m looking out the cabin window and see movement close to the ground. I’m thinking coyote but when I throw up my binocs it’s a cat.
It had snowed all night and was lightly snowing. I couldn’t get a shot before it dropped out of sight so the chase was on. We followed the tracks into two thick draws one on my property that just knew the cat was going to bed down in. He circled in the brush around a big pine but then kept walking.
Second draw was even thicker with some cliffs. Problem was it wasn’t my property. I own all the way around this 40 acre piece so we walk the perimeter. No tracks coming out. I call the neighbor and explain the situation. He says he was there on Saturday and the deer were acting really skittish, he figured there must be a predator around do by all means go after the cat and report back.
With permission granted I went to a vantage point above the draw where I could see really well. My buddy went back to the tracks and followed them into the thick stuff. I just kept scanning for movement he came out the other side still on the tracks. He got to the base of the rock cliffs and found the cars bed and fresh tracks coming out of it.
How did I not see it leave?
He walks another fifteen yards and looks back into a crease in the cliffs. There is the cat ten yards away looking at him. All I see is his throw his gun up and the cat walks out away from him. My buddy is 6’1” tall and this cat looks big walking away from him.
I have the scope on the walking cat and wait for it to get over the first cliff and away from my buddy. My buddy was moving backward trying to get a better view up the cliffs to get a shot. Just as the cat got to the next cliff and at 150 yards from me I touched the trigger. Boom smack cat down. Oh know cat back up, three bounces straight down hill covering 30-40 yards easy and into the thick stuff.
I’m frantically scanning the draw but he doesn’t come out. I yell at my buddy the cat went into the thick stuff and hasn’t come out. He says it sounded like a solid hit. I agree and tell him I knocked it down but it got up and went straight downhill.
He cautiously heads towards the thick stuff. Crosses the cats tracks and starts scanning the draw. His rifle quickly comes to his shoulder. The cat is bed under a log staring at him 30 yards away. He squeezes the trigger boom smack and the cat jumps up and runs right at him. 30 yards boom smack cat still coming boom smack 15 yards cat down.
What a rush for both of us but certainly more for him.
Lots of high fives snd hugs. Just an amazing hunt. We actually walked a cat down and shot it. I had this same cat on trail can 30 yards from my cabin in September and two different deer kills on my place. I had told my wife when the snow flew this cat was going to be my focus.
Mission accomplished and one big fat Tom taken out. Cat weighed 145 pounds and was covered in fat.

Couple pics of me with cat on my shoulders. I’m 5’9” 175 pounds. My buddy hugging the cat is 6’1”.

Impressive accomplishment! Thanks for sharing!
Eaten any of him yet?

Nice work Rainier! Thats awesome. That thing is a fatty!

Excellent!!! Great way to start the day!

And how many of those 180 pound cats on the net are actually 140-150 :chuckle: cause that is certainly a big mature tom, looks huge in that second pic. Congrats to both of you that is absolutely awesome!! Dandy cat and cool way to hunt him

Nicely done! Nice cat! Attempted that one time but the cat never treed up or bedded - just kept going. Congratulations!
-
Great story, and we'll done! Thanks for sharing!

Oh wow! That is a beast and I can only imagine how fun that hunt was. Great job!

Congrats! And ty for taking the time to share. Was curious where the cat was hit when you shot it that it didn't expire?

Send your story in to Bugle or Outdoor Life. Had me on the edge! Great cat.

Because it turned into a real rodeo after it bed down it’s tough to tell. I think I hit it in the right rear knee. That bone was KO’d. I was shooting a 300 win mag, just enough gun for the job :chuckle: it’s possible that the concussion of it hitting the cliff it’s just scared the crap out of the cat. My buddy shot it bedded and then twice as it was running at him so there are holes in and out of front to back.
I’m just glad it’s dead. A wounded cat is no joke. I’m really glad it walked away from my buddy versus pouncing on him from the cliff it was hiding in above him.
-
Totally agree with Piano. Would be a great contribution to the outdoor magazines.
Some cats do achieve awesome size, like the 204 pound tom that WDFW biologists collared a few years ago. I think it was somewhere in northeast WA. But that's probably pretty uncommon.
Again, congrats to Rainier10 on a real feat.
-
Congratulations and thank you, you saved a lot of deer and elk👍
Great story, once again, thank you.
-
Congrats and awesome story! One less cat in the state 8)

Yes, I don't think I want a cat like that pouncing on me.... ever!

Couple of things. Number one my buddy has some real stones getting that close to the cat both times. I’m not sure which was worse a healthy cat above you at ten yards or a wounded cat at 30 yards. He was a real trooper and a great guy to have as a hunting partner. He filmed a bunch of it, not the action but everything leading up to and after the kill. I assume he is going to do a video similar to my raffle elk hunt.
Second, I really wanted to get this cat. I had it on camera in September and I know it had killed two deer on my property in September. I told my wife I was going to focus this winter on killing it. I’m shocked it worked out like it did but super happy it did.
Thanks to everyone for the positive comments.

Here is his bed of leaves under the cliffs.

Nice job
Always wanted to do the track em down

The 180 pound lions only run with the 350 pound bears.
-
Great story, that would have been very exciting. I was wondering what happened when your friend had the cat at ten yards and didn't take a shot at that time? Was he just wanting to let you have the first shot?
-
Love it, saved a few deer that's for sure! Full body mount!!! congrats
-
Well Done! Was like reading a Jim Corbett story about tiger hunting. I for some reason thought all dead cats were "almost 200 lb" and all killed bears were about "300 lb". sarc
I bet a lot of animals we like to chase were saved by your perseverance and dedication to go after one animal. And thanks for reminding us that being a good neighbor can pay off in unexpected ways.
-

So the plan was for me to shoot first, right up until the cat was ten yards above him, then it was shoot now and shoot a lot but before he could get the gun up the cat was going away and figured I would have a better shot.
I should have killed this sucker with my shot but I’m going to be honest when I saw how close it had been to him and how big it was compared to him I got a little rattled.
Once it was wounded in the thick stuff I would have preferred to switch positions and go in after the cat but there was too much opportunity for something to go haywire in the switch. I told him if he had a shot to shoot and shoot a lot which he did.
He tagged the cat since he killed it. We are going in together on the mount and putting it on the wall at my cabin next to my raffle elk.

I was super happy the neighbor gave us permission and he was the first one I texted pics to.
When the tracks went onto his place I was 80% sure it bedded there but cougars can go a long way in a day.
It was 8am at that point and I didn’t want to bug him so we hiked all the way around his place first to make sure there were no tracks leaving his place. Little trick I learned from hunting with @bearpaw outfitters. No point of going into a drainage if the cat already crossed it and went out the road on the other side.
After looping all the way around it was later in the morning and I texted him. Super nice that he understands the need to balance predator and prey. Can’t thank him enough.
Lots of things had to go right for this to end the way it did. Thankful the stars aligned.

That's pretty cool ,you got a partner that will pitch in.
Help each other out.
All hunters should be that way.
Yup all alone when I got mine.
It's a different experience going and looking for a hit cat that's for sure.

That is most excellent Rick! Nicely done!

Well..... that's just dandy!!

Great work! Nice cat!!

Man I got hit the snow and look for cat sign. Good job and congratulations!
-
Great write up, better reality. Would want to be you; would only want to be your buddy after the fact. He has big kahunas hanging in there as the cat charged him.
Like others said, huge cat and the true weight makes us all do a reality check on size.
-
Reading the rest of this has been great to say the least. We should all be putting in the most effort we can, and kill more poorly managed predator species. Cheers!
-

Great stuff!
-
Well done .
-
Very nice, congrats and that cat appears to have been eating quite well.
-
Congrats! That things got a big belly on it. You just up'd my odds of killing an elk next year, Thank You.
-
Tank of a cat!

According to the tooth this was a two year old cougar.
FYI I was at my cabin this weekend and have another one on camera about the same size two miles north of where this one was shot. Another slightly bigger cat about a mile east from this one and a much smaller cat about a mile west.
Oh and a pack of nine coyotes running together came in at night last night.

Thats a lot of cats in close proximity. Those things will put a smack down on deer in that turf. There’s a couple spots we knew of in the Methow that had multiple cats prowling about 5 or 6 years ago, we physically seen 4 different cats in about a 2-5 mile radius. We seen them in September, by the end of October that turf was null and void of any deer activity, we didn’t even see deer tracks in that turf when snow was on the ground in November/December.
Once again, great job👍
-
Surprising size difference between male and female at that age. Did they say if that was average size for a 2 year old male?

I'd be talking with my neighbors around your cabin to get/give permission to shoot predators. :twocents:
-
Yes I have a few different people working the area.
-
This is one of the coolest stories I've seen on here. Always been a goal to walk down a big kitty when I lived in WA. Didn't happen.
Good on ya Rainier, out there doing good work the hard way.
-
My buddy found these today on my property in the draw but lower in elevation from the cliffs the cat had been bedding in. Small cow elk carcass( had ivories) and buck carcass.
-
That’s why he had such a big belly on him. The deer and elk around your place are definitely going to get through the winter easier now. Hopefully a new cat doesn’t move in now that he is gone
-
Great Story! Way to go, guys!
-
Would love to post it with your permission…
Would love it even more if I could link the video on the call in story video page!

Nice! Congrats!

Yes sir. We have stumbled onto many of these graveyards, we ran into one in the north part of the Methow that 26 different caches were discovered. Mostly small deer but there were some bucks, three I believe. For those who don’t believe cats are the number one problem, I would respectfully disagree.
-
I've heard that new cats that occupy the vacancy will utilize the same ambush locations. :twocents:

I have heard that as well and will be targeting those areas that I learned about on this hunt.
There are still three cats really close to this spot, one of them a young cat.

Talked with a fella who’s killed a few cougars, apparently they will smell “death” in areas, kind of like a house cat will find a mouse or rat kill. When we found those cache sites we told him. His questions were when and how old. We had pictures. He was back in there and killed a pretty good cat. Another one he killed that winter, he killed it coming out of a hay bail in a pasture. My buddy and his son went to the bail, 2 deer buried in there, covered up like a couple turds(his words). The bail was about a mile from the the “grave yard”. Give em hell Rainier. 👍👍

Guess what tripped my game camera tonight.

Get em!

Clearly there are a ton of cats in this state. I’m in GMU 328. Still open for cats. Shot one three months ago and now there are two more 100 yards from where the other one was. They were here for two hours last night, 1:30am to 3:30. Ten deer maybe 150 yards away from them. They finally walked off to the north. Headed out at first light but no luck. They had been on the move for over two hours, no snow so it was like looking for two needles in a haystack.
-
Couple more photos
-
My pulsar rangefinder binocs and rifle scope worked awesome, both cats showed up well and were obviously cats, the shape of the head was obvious and of course the long tail. It’s insane how good the technology is.
-
Dang I think we need to get a call list of those of us that are local to you when this kind of thing happens and we can get a group of people to go after them if they are moving off of your property and up onto forest service. on my electronic game caller there is baying hounds. Has anyone ever thought of using that while following them to see if you could tree them? Or maybe two or three of us could be carrying them and they would think we were a whole pack of hounds and have an even better chance of treeing them.

Now if we can just convince the WDFW of your first sentence. Some have been voicing this concern for a long time now, including myself. Good luck on the persuit.👍

Wow. Is there any more ungulates left near your cabin? We all need to do our part and shoot more predators. Congrats on the December cat!
-

Funny you ask. The rib cage on the right is an elk, the rib cages to the left are two deer. I brought my cow elk head that had been in the freezer from December and that is what they were chewing on.
150 yards below them were 10 deer, a couple laying down and 8 up feeding. Didn’t seem concerned about the cats and the cats walks away in the opposite direction.
Today from my cabin I can see 50 elk and close to 200 deer
-
@bigmacc we need a different commission or at least density results to come back showing what we are all seeing in the field.
Then we could push for longer seasons and higher quotas.
If cougars were not classified as big game animals you could hunt them at night and use thermals both of which would be great tools for controlling the population
-
FYI I have a ton of game cameras and in a five square mile area these two cats bring my total to five cats still alive in a five square mile area. Because of date and time stamps I know they are all different cats. These two just moved in since my buddy shot the one in December.
It’s freaking nuts.
-
Sounds like the wolves are back in your hood (a recent report) any of those show up on your cam?
-
I don’t understand why some complain about cougar seasons or quotas, in areas where quotas are not met.
-
I think it's the principle of it... There is no reason there should be a quota at all. Not that quotas are getting met and hunters are regularly getting cut off.
-
Sounds like the wolves are back in your hood (a recent report) any of those show up on your cam?
Yes two on camera one with a collar and one without. There is rumor there are three two with collars one without. All are from Canada is the rumor. Males kicked out of their pack looking for a mate. They only come in one at a time not as a group. Hopefully they move on.
-
Thats interesting.

Watch some episodes of Wild Boar Fever and then conduct driven hunts......Europe style?

I have two guys that live close heading up in the morning and I’m thinking about driving over tonight. It’s supposed to snow just a dusting tonight

Good luck
-
I'm no cougar expert but I believe at least one of those cats is fairly young based upon the stripes that are visible on the inside of their front legs but lack of body spots? I'm curious what anyone else thinks?
Good luck if you get after them. I've been trying this winter for the first time and have really enjoyed it but I wish I still had some snow on the ground! I'm still going though and hope to get at least 2 or 3 more days before the season closes down.
-
There are both yearling mother probably was killed earlier this year.

-
The stripes on the front inside left leg had me curious also. They are both the same size basically. One is maybe a little bigger but not much. Both are similar in size to the mule deer that were on the hillside. So tough to tell. Hoping we can whack one or both tomorrow. There will be three of us there with tags.
-
I saw tue barring as well, and am curious. But i know that trail cams and ir especially can distort colors or shading. Looking at the cat i killed in sept sometimes it looks the same but inspecting the hide there is no distinguishable marks.

It’s windy as heck hoping this works out in the morning. Not sure I’m going to get much sleep tonight. I really hope I can knock one down and see what I’m dealing with here.

Dude I couldn’t have asked for better conditions. Windy all night, light snow started just before daylight, kept snowing with great cloud cover to make it seem later than it was just no frickin cats. My buddies drove the roads looking for tracks. Big nothing burger.
I’ll be back over this weekend and hope to post a kill photo.
I will also post photos of the elk head they chewed on like a rawhide bone, it is shredded like you took a cheese grader to it.
It’s hunting and was still better than work which is where I’m at now playing catch up.
-
Are you guys doing any calling ?

No calling, I really thought they would just show up. This weekend I may do some calling.
-
I sure would
Been there done that
I used a C3 burnham brothers reed stuffed in 10 inches of black rubber fuel line

What's the strategy with the fuel line? Just to change the noise up a bit? I've only mouth called using a cheapo Primos Catnip but am trying to learn some more so I'm not just stuck with my FoxPro.

I make it sound like something’s screaming and being shook like a rag doll
Killed my cougar using it
Worked on coyotes bobcats bears ravens raptors and one weasel so far
I also have a foxpro but always have fuel line with C3 in my coat pocket
Various sizes in lengths
Put the reed inside a new piece of fuel line
Bite down and go to town
I use a squeaker in my pocket if needed in close

They are driving me nuts. It’s all I can think about.

Just a thought, I’d consider getting a new bait, couple beaver carcass from a trapper. And perhaps moving your bait down closer to cover. The cats will stay longer into the morning if they have cover.
Hang your bait off the ground to keep the coyotes spooked and off your bait.
-
That is a great idea. I think next year I’m going to setup in another spot more in the trees.
-
Lots of fun.
&
Best of luck on your pursuit.
This is one nice thing about WA.
Since they aren't getting ran by dogs there are plenty around.
-
Hopefully I can shoot one this weekend and my wife or father in law can shoot the other. If we can at least get one that would be great. I can shoot the other one in April.
-
There appears to only be one. Came in last night from 1-3am.
-
Hiked through the cliffs where I thought it would be and nothing.
Hopefully I get a shot tomorrow.

Really windy all night last night. No cats showed up.
Frustrating.
-
Back last night. :bash:
-
Maybe I missed it, but are those rib cages and parts staked down? I am really surprised they haven't drug them to somewhere with a little more cover.
-
They are not. They are picked pretty clean. I stuffed a frozen block of my trimmings from butchering the elk, fat and silver skin into the rib cage and then stuffed the lower leg bones and hooves through the ribs trapping the meat inside making it tough to get out. Once it thaws it just loose scraps so you can’t grab it and run away with it all at once.
-
Back again as a pair.
-
You can always work the next day/week :chuckle:.........get on em!

I’m thinking todays photo looks like a solo male and yesterdays photo is either two sibling sub adults or a mother and a subadult.

Nice cam shots.
I agree with you on the two, they appear to be smaller, probably yearlings. The lone cat looks more like a female to me, possibly the mother, possible a young tom, but toms are longer than females and that adult cat doesn't look long enough to me to be an adult male. You will probably never know for sure!

I really appreciate your input Dale. I just hope I can kill one of these cats and hopefully that will help connect the dots.
-
I should also say I appreciate all the input on this thread and the PM’s I’ve received. These cats are driving me nuts.
-
Appreciate you taking the time to keep the story going, been a fun thread to watch.

No cats last night on my cams or the neighbors cams. He is going over tonight as we are supposed to get snow and he is going to try to track them down. I have volleyball for my daughter and can’t get away until Saturday afternoon.
-
You need to get in there and call. The fact the those cats keep coming back to your scraps that often means their hungry. I’ve called in 7 cats now since December and we’ve killed 3 of them. All have been in the area within the last 12hrs of me setting up and calling. If you can sneak in without them knowing it shouldn’t take long for one to respond.

I hope this snow helps!

No cats on camera last night. Cabin is right at snow level so it didn’t stick.
Volleyball this afternoon and tomorrow but tomorrow night and Sunday morning I’m going to do some calling and hope to have some positive results to report.

No cats for two days. Neighbor says there are birds on a fresh kill site. Drove over and watched til dark then set up a camera on the new kill. It’s a doe. Base of head is eaten and both hind quarters. Backstraps, front shoulders and neck are all still intact. Hoping they come back tonight and into daylight. Kill site is one draw over from where my bait was.
🤞🤞🤞

this is great. gets my blood pumping in the offseason!

Nothing but birds on the deer for the last two days. It’s been crazy windy.
Heading back home to go to work.
-
Maybe buy some Airtags and put them inside some steaks and chicken breasts and put those out there? :dunno:
-
The eagles drug the carcass out of view of the camera. :bash:

Pic from this morning.

Isn’t that the way it goes! :chuckle:
-
I really hope the commission is following this thread and sees how hard it is to kill one of these cats. They are always one step ahead.
-
Just hanging out
-
Couple more
-
I'm no cougar expert, but that looks BIG!
-
Those are smaller yearling. If Rainier10 keeps his feeding program going this summer they will be decent cats this fall
. P.S keep them on the hill I don’t need them down at the ranch lol

I always like cougar pics for some reason.
Still a few days left here in April,if your GMU is open.
Thanks for sharing pics.
I still need to try for one at least once before April ends.
Slap the fox pro out ,see if it pops up.
Good luck.

This is my last weekend to get one. I haven’t put scraps out there for weeks. Hoping to get a shot this weekend so I can how big they are.
