Has anyone ever applied for the game commission position? If so how far in the process did you make it ?

Yes, I had three phone conversations. First with my state Senator, second with Ruth Musgrave (Senior Policy Advisor to Inslee), third with Barbara Baker (commission chair). This was followed up with a zoom conference with two people from Inslee’s office plus Musgrave asking a lot of questions regarding policy and current wildlife issues, went about 45 minutes. I believe I was in one of the final rounds but was most likely passed over due to my lack of higher education or biology/wildlife management degree. This was the most recent appointment round last year with I believe.

Complete bs and checking boxes. Woody over addressing a balance. The decision was likely already made.  So frustrating and thank you for keeping your name in the hat...

Thanks for trying!

I doubt not having a biology/wildlife management degree was the reason you were passed over... they don't seem to care about proper management based on the decisions being made.

Based on years and years of observing, my way of thinking is if they do not consider you a like-minded colleague, you will remain on the outside looking in.    :twocents:

Thanks for the reply’s I’m pretty sure there’s two opening this year. I would encourage everyone and anyone that is slightly interested in at least filling out an application.

Two of the three are commissioners that are well thought out and responsible.  If you lose either it would be very bad.  On the other hand I agree with you because I cannot imagine the frustration these two have experienced.

Do they pay commission members,or are they volunteers.
Even though I would never be considered.
Can't quit my day job.

I believe it’s $150 per day for in-session meetings and all travel expenses are compensated. There was a push last year from an Eastern Wa rep to make it a salaried position in hopes of attracting more talent. as it currently sits the appointment caters to those of financial means who are retired, a narrow demographic which I pointed out to the selection committee and heavy criticized them for in the interview process.

Does it still just require 3 to 4 days a month?

They pay me salary,I'll apply.
But I have no talent,or higher education,so I'm out.

It appears some of the current commissioners say they have higher education but don't act like it. Throw your hat in , don't mention you hunt or fish and don't tell them your a hunt wa member.   :chuckle:

I was told you can expect 10-40 hours per week, depending on how dedicated you want be to the appointment. From answering calls from citizens, discussing issues with WDFW staff, and meeting with special interest groups the position can be time consuming. This is why the appointment caters to those of financial means who are retired. The idea of making it a salaried position with state benefits would open the pool of applicants to those willing to put in the time and work who are otherwise dissuaded by a non-paid position.

I encounter a more diverse group of people while hunting than what's represented on the commission. Might be time we highlight that  :dunno:
