Title: Baiting?
Post by: Hornseeker on June 12, 2009, 06:29:08 AM: I keep seeing all these cam setups with bait.... is it really legal in Washington to use baits to attract wildlife?

Is it legal to "bait" deer and elk? I already know its not legal to bait bears...

Is it legal to "bait" them for non-hunting reasons?

Just curious. In Montana we aren't allowed to "feed" the wildlife at all...except for bird feeders on private property.

And if you "happen" to have a bear walk into your "deer bait" you can kill it right? Cause...you weren't "baiting bear"... just baiting deer. :chuckle:

What you may think of salt licks and apples on the ground, others may think hunting over any deer feeding areas as bait.

Baiting deer is lawful. However, there are no regulations regarding types or method of distribution.

if you do hunt a different area than the baited cam areas, then whats the point of the baited cam sites?

i do have trail cams but have not used bait yet...just curious of everyone's honest take on this.

there are plenty of berry patch baits that nature has laid out for me instead. these are still legal ;)...for now...

Baits or scents are against the law for bears.

Post by: jstamp on June 12, 2009, 07:27:32 PM: i put apples and deer chow in front of my trail cam with full intentions of getting some good deer and elk pics. I got a few deer pics, but now i have a pile of bears coming in. i set my camera up in an area where there aren't that many bears and in the middle of a clearcut. I do plan on bear hunting bears this year, but not where my camera is set up. i hunt bears in the high country and usually see quite a few every year. I also plan on pulling my camera and bait out in a few weeks, but it is kinda cool to get some trl cam pics, since it's the first time i have put it out. :twocents:

Post by: h2ofowlr on June 29, 2009, 09:11:16 PM: Unfortunately it's at the discretion of the officer as to whether the area is baited or not. He will write you up and it's a mandatory court appearance. You pretty much need a lawyer to get off and that will cost your about $2k at the min. I know a guy that went through this. It was thrown out, but he still had to pay the legal fees.

not stirring the pot or promoting anything but alot of these rules are made for the convenience of the game officers just like what has been said before it's up to the officials to decide if you where hunting deer and got a bear by accident or you where bending the rules. kinda leaves it to the individual to take it upon themselves to take the higher road and do the right thing by pulling out of a situation like that.
but not everyone has a trail camera to have the foresight as to what is actually eating all those yummy goodies... :dunno:
