I got that shovel for Christmas 25 years ago. All stainless and great angle for the dig. I sharpen it occasionally. I wish I could find another one like it.

We used the ‘old style’ tube with a vent hole until a friend let us borrow his ClamHog, or Hawk, or whatever they are. Now we have two of those. Night and day difference. I let a neighbor use one not long ago and I think he regrets it as they are not cheap to purchase. Sure makes it easier though!

Very doable...most clams hang in that range anyway..
Just a more narrow window...and less surf buffer..

I have dug clams on a 2 ft hold up and done well. You have to work harder for them and be able to dig in the water, but they are there.
Think of it this way. If you have a 11 ft high tide at noon and a -1 ft tide at 6 pm, the tide is dropping 12 ft in 6 hrs. That is 2 ft per hr. Nobody thinks anything about getting to the beach 2 hrs. to low water. That means the tide still has approximately 4 feet to drop until slack low tide. And if the low tide is -1 ft., add 4 ft to that and at 2 hrs to low water, the tide is a plus 3 ft. at that point in time, and people are getting clams then.

No worries at all. On a -1.0, I’m often done 2 hours before low tide. So that’s probably +2? In the surf, but dry beach at +1.0 I imagine.

We went again this last weekend. Great clamming both days. On Sunday we clammed at Roosevelt beach and crossed the creek at Iron Springs. I just read today that a guy got his truck stuck in the creek and died. I always look at it closely before crossing and sometimes turn around. If you choose to cross that creek be cautious. I’ve seen a truck not make it and get swept away. Driver was lucky to get out that time.

The location description seems odd, but I'm thinking he drove into the Copalis River off of a "fishing" access road vs doing a "low tide beach crossing" which I would not ever recommend on the Copalis - which is closed to vehicles anyway. Hard to imagine getting swept up at Iron springs, plenty of "street" cars cross there. It happened at 6:30 on Monday night which was not part of a clam dig.

Grays Harbor Scanner
Ocean Shores, 11 Ocean view Lane caller states they can see a vehicle knows down into the river unknown if occupied can only see the brake lights 629 p.m.
Access is going to be off of the Roosevelt Beach approach, one adult and a child were seen swimming away from the vehicle towards the North Bank of the river.

Not me but told to me so you can only judge me laughing.
Two guys I worked with told me they went clam digging and the digging was excellent, so they had their limits in short order. On the way out they decided it was too early to go home so they decided to stash their clams and go back for seconds. They are driving down the highway looking for a good place to stash their clams when they see a pickup pull out of a logging road up ahead so decided that was a good spot. Driving in the logging road just a little way they spotted a big spruce stump along the road and thought, that's a good spot. They went around the back of the stump to stash their clams and there are 6 limits of clams stashed there. So, they took all the clams and went home.
I bet them other guys were sure mad.
