Title: New dedicated turkey gun
Post by: ASHQUACK on February 11, 2024, 01:09:35 PM
So, I decided that I'm going from a 12 gauge to a 20 for turkeys. Wanted a semi auto, and started shopping the interwebs for a decent entry level 20. Looked at everything from completely unknowns to some of the top end 2k plus auto loaders. I happened by Bi-Mart on my way home from a clam dig and saw they had a Weatherby Element in 20 for a relatively low price, comparatively speaking. I bought it and have ordered a tru-glo 1x red dot for it. Next up I'm looking for a gunsmith to drill and tap the receiver for a pic rail to mount the scope. My Smith passed away a couple years ago. I plan on finding a couple of decent chokes and head to the patterning woods. I'm gonna try hevi-metal turkey loads 1st. Then maybe some of the old Federal lead #4 duck loads left over from....well left over anyway. My only (mostly mental) issue with the gun is the long 28" barrel.

Have you thought about trying TSS #9s?

I bought the same Bi-mart special but in a 12 gauge. Great shotgun so far! Bi-Mart has some sleeper deals

Actually yes, I have 5 a friend loaded that will be test loads for choke combinations.

They should pattern great paired with the right choke.

@ASHQUACK doesn't it already have scope mounts milled into the receiver? The only auto loader I have that doesn't have them is my SP10.

Unfortunately I don't believe that it does. I'll look again when I get it in hand. Did I mention that I hate the stupid 10 day waiting period..stupid communist legislature.

I got an extra delay because the SXS shotgun didn't have a SN#.

I have a dedicated 20ga turkey gun and I've killed turkeys with the Apex #9 TSS, and also with straight-up high brass magnum pheasant loads in #4 and #6. The TSS penetrated further into the birds but didn't kill them any quicker. I think the TSS might come into it's own at longer ranges. Have fun with your new gun.

Way back when, we bought a bunch of cases of federal high brass 3" #4 from Yard Birds  I still have a few (10) boxes of those. I'll probably shoot a few of those for up close birds.

Going to have to start searching for a Smith to do that work.

be careful with shot size in TSS tubes... most have restrictions from manufacturer..

I have a Jeb's 20ga choke in .555 and it patterns really well with both TSS and lead. Great chokes.

This may be an option for you if your tru glo is for a pic rail

No idea if anyone makes a saddle mount for the weatherby but that's also an easy option.

All saddle mounts I found were for other guns. I know that something would probably work but....I'm gonna call that company and see if this is an option for me.  Thanks!

look at burris speedbead for non invasive mounting for your red dot...

I put a red dot on my son's shotgun.
Cheapo 12guage from Walmart.
It was drilled and tapped, but no rail or scope base would line up.
Only one company I found even sold one,his birthday is in March.
I was on a time crunch to make something work
I ended up drilling holes in a different rail. His rail is only held on with 3 screws instead of four.
Buying scope bases for shotguns ,seems more difficult then it should be.

:yeah:
I've used a Beretta 391 with a shim area mount, it was very good. This Burris system looks good and for about $60, no drilling required.

I wonder if that system would work on the CZ Drake 410. With 410s being so much smaller of barrels. And the CZ drake not being tapped. I may have to look into it more. Been thinking about a red dot for turkey hunting.

Since it mounts on the rib. If adaptors slide between the barrel and rib you should be OK.

That’s what I was thinking. It should slide in no problem. I think the only concern I have is how narrow the rib is.

:yeah: I have the speed bead and a FastFire red dot on my Benelli, love it. I just remove the red dot for upland and waterfowl

I called Burris and according to the customer rep they don't have a mount that will work with the Weatherby. I ordered 2 different sights. The 1st one is the Hi-Viz Tom Buster and the 2nd is the Dead Ringer beard buster. They both mount to the rib. I'll see which one I like the best and use it. They were only 20 bucks each so no huge money spent. Next up will be finding a good patterning choke.

I did a 20g nova last year. Mounted a bushnell rx using a Sumtoy base. The RX is the same footprint as Leupold Delta point. Local gun shop tapped it for $80. Patterned Federal, Browning and Herters TSS. Herters was as good as Federal for $15 less.

If you are looking for a gunsmith in the Castle Rock area, try 3 Peaks Firearms.  He's good.
