Title: Peaches Ridge (anyone get drawn)
Post by: TeacherMan on June 12, 2009, 07:48:27 PM
I can't believe it, I got drawn for Peaches Ridge archery!!! The crazy thing is I got drawn last year for a modern big bull tag so I came into this season with only 1 point, was not expecting anything. I cant wait to get over and start scouting the area, I have gotten a couple smaller bulls out of that unit in the past and the only problem I can see now is that it is 3 months away and its going to kill me to wait.  :chuckle: Hope some other people had great success also.

Nice work, how's the knee coming along?

Went to the doc today and I will be in a sports cast and out hiking in 6 weeks he said. They took out the staples today and I start physical therapy on Tuesday.

Teach- It sounds like you know the area fairly well but this year my advice would be get away from the roads and quad trails. Unfortunately the season opens up the day after Labor day and if you've been over there anywhere near labor day you know what a bike riding nuthouse it is. Good luck, I'm really jealous and I won't tell my wife with 6 points that a guy with 1 point took her tag! :chuckle:

Thanks, cant wait to get in the area and check it out. After hunting the Observatory area last year I really got to know the boundary between it and Little Naches and I think I will do some heavy scouting on that end of it as well, if I don't find a spot there I will be heading up the hill into the country between 410 and the Little Naches. I have had good luck in that area. Any pointers you can think of I will look into.

thanks

tell the wife next year  :chuckle:

I'll do my best, I'm going to be able to hunt a total of 6 days and have at least that many days into pre-season scouting.

Maybe I'll see you in there teacherman.  My good friend drew the rifle tag.  I think that the seasons are the same.  I had the tag 3 years ago.  What a blast!  The best hunt of my life by far.

Sorry, I just noticed that you had an archery tag, so I guess you'll get first crack.  Maybe I'll see skinner.  He should recognize me by the horse that I ended up not giving away. :chuckle:

No, I had never hunted that area before and didn't do my homework like I should have because I was going over with about 8 other guys during the regular season. My number one piece of advice use the first week of the tag when there are no other hunters in there with rifles. The area we hiked into every day was about 5 miles in just to get to the ridges we hunted and really good, the group had seen bulls in there every year for the last 10 years and they where there last year to, the only problem was the day before I got there a 360 7x7 was literally shot off the same finger I hunted opening morning.  :bash: I got a bear off the gut pile, that's how I found out about the bull that was shot there the day before. I only had 4 days to hunt also, major draw back about being a teacher. This year I will have 6.

Ya bear good thing you didn't get rid of her! ;)  I would have driven up and gotten her if those people wouldn't have given me 2 with my corral.  I might see ya there but I don't think I'm gonna pack in because It would be a lot with just me and the gf plus I drew a tag back at home oct 3 so as soon as she gets one I want to be on the road.

Good luck teach it has been my best and funnest hunt to date!

I just want to thank everyone that has PM me and given me areas to look into. I'm making a folder and plan on looking into all of them starting this weekend. What is the snow pack like in that unit at this point? Anyone ever find sheds over there? I have found lots of deer sheds in my life but only a couple elk. Much chance of finding them above 4000'  :dunno: Anyway thanks again I appreciate all the information I can get, with gas the price it is it is really nice to be able to go into an area and know where to start focussing.

Unless he is holding out on me he will be on foot.  I am just hoping that i can find a spot that I can shoot a cow or spike not far from Teachermans unit. Can't walk very far, old, decrepit, and disabled.  Pretty much useless but i can wait in a nice pass or well used trail all day.  :tung:

Hi all.  New to the sight.  I feel guilty but this is my 2nd year elk hunting and I got drawn for Peaches Ridge A hunt.  Being new to elk this is going to be a blast!  I am going to try to start scouting this weekend and as many after as possible.  Any tips or insight would be appreciated.

Thanks

teach,

Congrats on that tag.  PM me if you need any help scouting, packing out, etc.  I'm not far away and will be up there most likely anyway.  My brothers worked for a guide in there and I can point you in the right direction if you like.

the snow held on late this year I think that you will find most of your sheds low . it seemed that wat in 340. Theres ussaully a good bull or two hanging on moonlight . saw a heavy bull last year in there . during archery season at 20 yards , no tag. good luck. Corey

Went out yesterday and got into some great area, thanks for all the info everyone. Saw some nice animals but even nicer area. All the motorbikes I saw definitely made me look into some different areas that I was not planning on. Saw a couple nice branched animals already, deer and elk. A blue grouse that looked like it had mated with a turkey  :chuckle: and area that when we got out of the car instantly smelled like elk pee, found a couple muddy spots on the ground about 2 feet in diameter than they had been peeing in like they where marking the area  :dunno: Up above Ravens Roost found a single set of tracks that looked like they could either be a husky or a wolf, there was no human tracks around and I was a couple hundred yards from the truck, took a pic with a 45-70 bullet next to it and the track is slightly larger than the bullet. Any body ever hike down to the meadow you can see from the towers? They look about 4 miles in, think I may check those out in the future. Overall a great day, we finished by driving over Government Meadows and back down into Green Water, tried to cut back up the 72 road back toward 410 but the snow stopped us, lots of snow pockets up high still, don't think all the elk have moved back up yet because of that.

That's beautiful country. I've never hiked down into that meadow but I've seen elk down there. That is 410 at Greenwater. Are you talking about trying to get up to Chinook Pass or cutting back up the 72 towards I90? All you rifle and Muzzleloader permit holders be nice because there may be some great info for you after this is all said and done.  ;)

I think he meant going back over corral pass instead of chinook. Or possibly Green pass.

Ya teach labor day is the 7th this year so those motor bikes and rock crawlers are gonna be all over the place that weekend.  They're pretty used to it but the chances of them screwing up a setup is likely. :twocents:

Got drawn myself for archery this year with 5 points.  Hopefully the same 360 class bull I had at 20 yards last year will haunt the same mountain.  Lots of bikes through the area during the season so lets hope it is a lot cooler and wetter than last year, seems to cut down on the numbers.  I will be doing some scouting this next few months and if I get a trail cam like I want I'll post pics if and when.  Good luck.

I'd just be happy if the daytime temps don't hit the 80's and 90's like last season.  Ya, snow would be wonderful but even morning frost would be nice with highs in the 40's up around 4-5000'.

I drew the Peaches Ridge ML bull tag this year with two points. I finally got lucky. I still didnt get drawn for deer with 9 points. I am gonna do plenty of scouting myself, but it would be nice to gain some info from the bow hunters after there hunts are done. I am gonna be in Idaho hunting from Sept 15th-25th so I will miss out on scouting right before my season starts.

I was talking about Greens Mt, the 1914 rd it goes all the way to Government Meadows. I scouted it heavy, plus all the Rd's to the left of the 1914 and the 1902. There is a ton of country in that area with tons of elk. I have no way to put pics on but I did get a pic of a nice 3 pt black tail on the crest, just down the west side, he was about 16+ wide and had nice HEAVY forks already with small eye guards. The bulls we saw where at about 500 yards just below some cliffs, you would have thought they where goats. I have already planned my next three trips, the next one involves a trail cam and salt  :chuckle: The ones after that I will firm up my camping spot, then I will make a final scouting trip at the end of August pull the cameras and post some pics.

I appreciate all the information that people have given me, thanks again

Chris

Finally got lucky my arse.  You drew a Bethel Archery tag in 2006.  I wish I had your bad luck. Then maybe I'd get drawn  :chuckle:  No big deal.  I'll just kill a 350" bull in the Alpine.

A handful of pics from my last scouting trip up the Little Naches. The one of the wet spot on the ground is a mudded up elk piss puddle  :chuckle: don't know why it was like that must be marking his area. The deer and grouse where early morning not good light and the others are just some nice area that I cant wait to get into and hunt.

I was up in there last Thursday and friday. I saw 12 bulls in two days, but 8 of them were spikes.  :dunno:. Out of the other four, two of them were already nice bulls. I also saw a spike deer up by Ravens roost. Teacherman, what kinda salt lick would you say works best?

Yes! After 6 years of trying. My buddy and I got the tag and are still trying to figure out where to go. I know the area fairly well off the 410 side, but we are considering coming in the I-90 side through the 336. We are going for the full early season minus Monday the 20th. Should be a bugling freanzy I hope. I had this tag in 98 and ended up with nothing, not to say that they were not there.                 What are your thoughts?   I know Im not going any where near crow creek after a long weekend of a wheelin freanzy!

Hello fellow archery hunters,  This is my fourth time getting drawn for peaches ridge. Three archery and one muzzle load. So far I've gotten a 5x5 with my bow and a 6x6 with my muzzle loader and One year I got skunked. I had seven points this year and got drawn. I've done one day of scouting this year and I've seen a 2x2 and two spikes. Lot's of cows and calves.  I'll be camping along Quartz Mt. road if anyone needs help packing one out. My name is Jim.

Hoping to check some of my little areas this weekend for some friends  ;) and my father in law. I'll try to get some pic's and post when I get home. The Huntwa members that have this tag should maybe put a pie plate with huntwa on it when you all are over there hunting, might be a great way to share a campfire.

My two buddies have the Peaches Tag. I want to jump over the ridge into 336 for a day or two. Will driving up Quartz creek or any of those roads get me close to the unit to where i can hoof it over in order to hunt spikes and cows. I would like to not have to go all the way around to the Taneum crk. road. Plus if i see a good bull i can get them in on it or them.

I believe you can go up Green Pass and drop down from there.
I would have to lok at my map to see what roads are needed.
I don't know fo any other road from Little Naches that takes you over. I know of some jeep and motorcycle trails that will get you there.

Tell me you don't drive a pink Jeep!?  I suppose you're big breasted Blonde too!

I'll be up the Little Naches tomorrow morning scouting a little, hopefully I don't see a bunch of bikes tearing it up ( wishful thinking ) and I certainly hope not to see Gasman in a pink Jeep! :chuckle:

Nice Jeep Gasman! Thank God it's not pink! :chuckle:

Here's the only pic's I got from my trip ( other than the helicopters ) over to Naches, left the camera at my Mom's when we went scouting but I let the dogs jump into American river on the way to her place.

Did anybody do any scouting over the weekend? I finally got my bow back and I started shooting again. I took my bow in for a tune up and while it was there they found a split in one of my limbs. Luckily it was under warranty. After having the string, the cable and the limbs replaced the bow was still right on. :)

Nice. Hunted the Taneum side with my son and a buddy. My son had the Peaches Muzzy tag. Got into them everyday. My buddies decided to hunt the Little Naches side this year so that there would be less people to contend with, me i will be calling. Neither of them have ever shot an elk. Hope its as good as i hear. We scouted a couple areas and i will be in there the weekend of the 29th. I hope we get some weather. Four more weeks...........

I'm not having trouble finding animals just not any big bulls yet. I made the mistake of setting my camera on 3 shots every 1 minute and got 1200 pics in 2 weeks. Just cows, calves and small bulls. I relocated the cam to a couple wallows that haven't been hit yet. Any of you elksperts know when those Rocky's start hitting the wallows  :dunno: I'll be doing more recon this weekend.

Do you think all of the motorcycles or most of them will be gone out of the Little Naches or the Taneum the day before the season???? My buddy thinks he wants to try a spot in the Taneum for the first couple of days because last time we went scouting all the camp grounds where full of bikes and campers.

95% of the bike will be gone. You'll have a couple that will extend their long weekend but most will not. Even still I would give it a couple of days or just find a spot the bikes can't go.

Ok Thanks. I tryed to do that last year, My buddy and I mountain biked in a few miles stashed the bicks and hicked up this old grown up road bulls bugling when we went to bed. Next morning woke up an hour before light stood out side the tent, Nothing totally quiet. Started to make our move to the clearing where the elk where NOTHING. There where 2 motorcycles parked about 200 yrds from our tent on the other side of the ridge. They road up right through the clearing and parked then went up into the woods. I was so POD I felt like letting the air out of there tires, But i didnt. They rode beyond the gates. I dont understand sometimes. I get frustrated with people sometimes. When the sign says NO MOTORCYCLES. Maybe they cant read

jstone, I feel your anger.  I don't condone this  :chuckle: but if you put a Kryptonite lock through the wheels and frame to hold 'em behind the lines until the authorities arrive might make them think before rounding gates.  A picture of their plates and gps location would work, too.  Or best yet use both.

I too drew Peaches (modern) this year Teacher.

Went out yesterday in the Taneum...saw a spike around Fishhook Flats with a couple cows (there is usually a good bull in there somewhere) and a nice 6x6 down low on my way out.

No fires to worry about yet Teach.

I need to get over to the Little Naches and check that area out here shortly.

Hey Teach,

Just a little backup plan in case you are not finding the bulls that you want. I have worked with Robin Rogers with Rugged Class outfitters. He also owns and runs Squaw Rock Resort now. You should check with him and see if he has a couple of days towards the end of your season that you may be able to reserve with him. He does know where the BIG bulls are. Go into Squaw Rock at the restaurant and look on the wall at the bulls they took last year. He can also help becuase if you are not 100% with your ailment he will still be able to get you into a good position and whistle them on in.

Just a note.

Anyways, I am jealous and good luck!

Brian

Along with a prayer for a 6 X 6 or better this year I am also praying that the temperatures are a little cooler this year.

This is my fourth time getting drawn. Just hike in away from the roads and trails and you'll see bulls. I've seen bulls up Ravens Roost, Pikes peak, Milk creek, Pine creek and Spring creek. Some bulls answer to anything and some run away when you call. Find water up high and just sit. Good luck to you all and I'll see you in the field.

Curlew is starting late this year, my first day of teaching is the 8th, I figured my boss wouldn't have approved the first couple days off. Plus I'm still feeling guilty for taking the last week off of work before summer break because of my knee surgery. I can't freekin wait!!! I will let people know where my camp is when I finally decide. It will be small and easy to move.

I left you one Teach! Passed on a spike at 30 yards and had a small 6 point come in again around 30 yards but got pinned down by one of his cows. He had 8 or so cows but definitely wasn't a herd bull. They were talking pretty good. I hope I don't need to be there the 17th-20 but will be if I have to. I'll be back at it this weekend.

I'm back home to pick up my son. I've only seen a 4 point Tuesday morning and a spike last night. It's really hot by 11:00. I called in a bull at 2:30 in the morning and it stuck around until daylight. It was sixty yards away. I couldn't get any closer so I cow called and he ran away.  That's bow hunting. Yellow jackets are really bad.  I try not to cook during the day. It attracts the bees. I'm leaving again tonight hoping for cooler weather.

I may stop bye and say hi, that is the exact same area that I plan on staying in, either there or higher up toward Ravens Roost. Keep your eye out for a big guy in a 07 silver Grand Cherokee.

For everyone that has offered to help pack out an animal I just want to say thanks again. Because of my knee I will be staying within a mile or so of my jeep this year. I will have a meat saw and my pack frame with me.

Ya, bulls pretty much shut down to calling after about the third or fourth day.  Had a few close encounters but all in all, I would say the taneum side of the Peaches units sucked.  Even the bulls I had close, it was so thick you could not see them within 20 yards, damn reprod and the bulls would not come out of it.  They don't get big by being stupid I guess.  Coach, all my pre-season scouting was for naught.  Local outfitter had one or two camps up in the drainage and ridge and found out that there was two other camps set up in there also.  WHY, WHY, WHY would you set up camp right in the elks bedroom and feeding area.  Too lazy to hike uphill from the bottom I guess.  Did a lot of hiking, lost 10 pounds, glassed 1000's of acres and trashed my knees.  Beautiful country, to bad the elk all got pushed out.  Next time maybe.

That's about what happened to us. That's why we had to move out to many people. Pretty much gave up my season cause i was the only one without a big bull tag. went 1 for 2 in the Little Naches. I missed my opportunity in the Taneum. I was sleeping at 1 p.m. and had a cow and spike at 30 yards. Next time i will have my bow ready. My fault.

yeah, i dont know about some of those outfitters.... we would put some bulls to sleep at night, then first thing in the morning an outfitters rig was parked there(on 3 different occasions). i sware they were trying to hunt the bulls we had bugling, then all elk activity stopped on friday once the jeep jamboree started.... we were camped on clover springs road right off the nile, and we had to listen to live music up the road from camp!!!! unbelievable...oh well, now i know what to expect next time i get drawn. i guess waking up at 4:30 every morning and being on the hill by 5 wasnt early enough.......

Tough luck men , I think that some of those peaches bulls cruised down for A COW ENCOUNTER. Did any of you guys with a bull tag hunt moonlight ridge , i saw bulls shoot over there when these idiots went right into the saftey zone wind at there backs , would have been nice to see a warden . I was getting concerned that I wasn't gonna close the deal on a bull . It seems that our new bow hunters will cut you off and sit right bellow you, rembers me of rifle hunts. Hey how about if there's three rigs parked in a spot you try some where else , or back up the hill and let them come out . coach

You can add me to the tag eatin group    :'(  Had a good time, called in some bulls, got winded a lot, had some set ups ruined by other hunters, hiked a lot, lost some weight, met up with Teacherman Chris and hunted with him the second to last evening and last morning, drug M-ray there the first weekend and Longtat the last weekend (Longtat stinks that may have been the problem), and learned a lot of good country.

Didn't see her but did see two guys who must have thaught the field behind the creek was open , really blatant two. they had tree stands right at the back of the field . pretty tough getting into those stands without spooking them. thats a pretty good thing if the guys would back off and let those elk come out on there own, they were really leary even opening morning .

My little brother made a rookie mistake and missed an opportunity at a 20 yard shot at a 300 class bull. He proved he is commited. Hunted the season with the exception of the last four days by himself.
That is the worse action I have seen in the Little Naches. Obviously more rifle hunters are picking up bows and hunting there rifle ways. Had several guys drive up to clearcut and while there rig was running, roll there window down and cow call with the rig running. No response, they drove offf.
The biggest *censored* move I have ever seen in all my years of hunting happen yesterday morning. We are on our last hunt and we are working a bull in a drainage and a four wheeler come up and turns his bike off near my truck. I'm down there thinking, is this guy ripping me off??? Couple minutes later, he lets out the most god awful bugle I have ever heard. I marched up the hill and was ready to rip his end off and when I pulled up on him, saw that he had a little kid with him. His little kid saved him from an ass whipping/chewing depending on his attitude. Looking forward to going out of state again next year.
On an end note, those October 1 hunters are going to have some nice bulls to take. The four pictures included a cow!
Nice talking to the guys I met up there.

I ate my Peaches tag again. I saw only three bulls the two weeks I was hunting. A four point, a spike and a two by one. I called in three cows trying really hard to put a rack on them. I got alot of answers with my bugle, put everytime I followed the bugle, it was coming from a deep drainage. The cows came in on a primos maka bull crazy call.  :dunno: Good luck to all on the late hunt.

Being 46 and hunting by myself, I found other hunters and told them where the bugles were coming from. I talked to one of the hunters the next day and he said he chased a 6x6 to the next county. He had 10 cows with him.  The final morning I got an answer from a bull down a canyon and I waved two hunters down. They said no thanks, it was too steep. I had a blast though.

Man, Jim, I can't believe that someone would say "no thanks" on the final morning because it was steep.

If I draw that tag in the future, I hope I meet someone like you...way to brave the tough stuff to try and get it done.  Sorry you didn't make it happen - sounds like you tried hard.

ok, so after 16 pages on this thread I am still curious how Teacherman faired in the peaches with his coveted tag. I love this tag and am hoping of drawing it next year, but I have not heard if he was successful or not?

Anyone know?

Thanks

I hunted with him the last morning and second to last evening. When I checked on him Sunday around 11 his tent was gone. I have Pm'd him and called, but haven't heard back. I hope he's ok. He was getting into a lot of bulls but hadn't connected yet.

Just a quick report on Teacherman, he has been trying tabasco in his tag soup so far.  Work is really interferring with serious hunting this year.  If he isn't working late he is off with his track team now.  He is also moving into a place just north of curlew and is one busy kid.  Hopefully late season may bring some fun.

Well, that's good news I think... He was talking about running away to Montana earlier this year (permanently).  So if he's moving to Curlew then he must be sticking around for a little while.

Well sorry I've been gone so long!!!

Hunt run down:
I left Curlew with a young kid on Wednesday evening and we got to the Little Naches at midnight and had camp set by 1am! We got up at 4:45 and head out of camp to an area that I have had luck in the past in and had several reports of different bulls in. At 5:25 we got onto several bulls in the bottom of a drainage that where bugling really well so we dropped in on top of them and played cat and mouse until 7:25 when the wind completely shifted on us so we backed out and headed down to another spot that I was originally heading for. About 250 yards before we get to our final destination I look at the kid next to me and say "did you just see that freakin bull!!!" quietly of course  :chuckle: I pull my jeep froward and about 20 more yards and get out with my bow and knock an arrow and walk back at full draw to the opening he was standing in, of course not to be seen, at that point I turn back toward my jeep and or course my door is open blocking the road and there he is standing in the road 30 yards in front of my jeep  :bash: A nice 300 ish 6x6 with a couple cows and a spike. We obviously didn't connect. I follow him into the timber and within seconds realize all I'm going to do is push him into the wilderness so I back out. We go up to the end of the road and park the jeep and sit and listen for about 20 minutes, perfectly quiet, nice for camping not for elk hunting. At this point its just a few minutes after 8 and we start heading out, I haven't been into the area for over a month so I was planning on spending most of Thursday looking for animals. On our way out we end up seeing a nice 350 poundish black bear that I chased for about 1/2 a mile, as soon as I got back to my vehicle we drive down the road another 1/4 mile and a three point mule deer jumps out but I pass him up and continue down the road. we scouted the rest of the mt. that afternoon and didn't see any more elk.

computer was being weird on the post above. Day two rolls around Friday, we go back to the area that we saw the 6x6 the morning before but we get there around 5:15 and start cutting up the clearcut to get over to the backside where I figure the elk would be holding. As we are going up the cut I make a couple cow calls and have cows answer me on bothsides in the cut but no bugles. We quietly get to the top and start working up the ridge line making cow calls ever 200 yards or so when all of a sudden my heart about exploded. A huge bugle erupted 70 yards below me in the timber just over the crest of the ridge. I immediately set up and continued my cow calling, of course I only had my one diaphragm with me since I had left my pack in the jeep so I could move quicker and quieter  :bash: I played with him for about 15-20 minutes and was able to pull him up the hill to about 40 yards out and we could see him but I could not get him to step out into the little 1/4 acre opening I was wanting him to get into. He completely demolished a small evergreen. This was one of the nicest bulls I had ever seen, honestly at the time I was thinking 390"  :chuckle: but realistically 340-350" but way past the point of should I shoot it or let it walk. I could hear cows down below him and several other bulls in the drainage below him and he finally disappeared back over the hill, I quickly moved in leaving my caller behind and I was able to get several glances at him pulling cows down the hill into the steepest drainage in the entire country, it was like a black hole.  :'( :chuckle: At that point I didn't want to completely push him deeper into the wilderness so we backed out for the afternoon.

Continue from above  :chuckle: Well that afternoon we checked out the otherside of the unit and put way to many miles on our boots that evening with nothing to show for it but some great pics of deer and only a couple cows. No bugles at dark. i was starting to realize that if I didn't get one in the morning it was going to be over. Well the day arrived, the reason I say it that way was someone was looking down from above, at 6 am I herd a small rumble and before I knew it it was raining. At this point I has already hiked half way up the upper side of my favorite clearcut because I wanted a chance at that big bull again. Since it has been light I had been listening to 4 different bulls two of which where in the clearcut that I was trying to get across. Within minutes of the rain starting the songs began. The songs of at least 10 different bulls!!!! We where surrounded, I have never been in the middle of so many bulls in my life. They where down below the clearcut road they where off the backside, they where in it!!! Any direction that I went there was bulls and cows. We spotted that same 6x6 from day one on an open hillside calling less than 200 yards away but just down over the backside of my ridge I could hear the same bull from the morning before, and he was fired up! We moved across the the side of the cut as fast as we could, I must have had an ounce of elk pee on me to make myself smell like one of them, no matter where we stepped you could see elk tracks, poop, dust wallows, rubs, we where in the spot. We rolled over the backside of the hill because I had learned the day before this big guy was taking him herum of cows...

(continued from above) down the ridge into the wilderness everday and it was deep, steep and very safe. As I rolled over the hill I could hear elk above me on the ridge breaking branches and feeding there way down toward me, I wanted to be quiet and just cut them off. I was just a couple minutes to late We where almost parallel on the ridge at this point, the big old bull had moved a little farther up the ridge and was taking them down in a new sport about 150 yard farther up than he had the day before. So I let out my first cow call since I had slid over the back of the ridge and the world exploded! I made him mad, my partner (young bow) was held back about 50 yards behind me with his little call that I had just been teaching him how to use over the last 3 days and I had him make 1 call and it was great. The bull was fired up but would not leave his cows, we moved in closer. We played cat and mouse for the next mile down the trail. He rounded the ridge and made it so I would be able to get within 30 or so yards of him, I was feeling really good about this. We closed the gap when all of a sudden he started bugle 200 or so yards down the hill on me? How did he slip down the hill? I wasn't going to let him slip away that easy, I turned my attention down the ridge and started calling back at him, he bugled back. I stopped. When all of a sudden my world stopped... the loudest noise I have ever herd in the woods!!! I thought bigfoot himself was coming into eat me, a loud roar/bark came from the hill just behind and above me and then it sounded like a small train moving down the hill!!! I looked back at the kid and I think he was cleaning his shorts.

(continued) He looked absolutely scared. Of course we had ran into two bigfoot hunter from California the day before that had filled his head with stories.  :chuckle: I had blown my chance on a bull of a life time. When the bull bugled below me I had focused on him when I should have known that it was a different bull, but they sounded the same  :dunno: I had turned my attention to him and let my guard down on the hill above me, I don't know if the giant had slipped down the hill on me and another bull had came in on top of me or what but it made the loudest, scariest, but coolest thing I have ever experience in the woods, It felt like a giant dog was about to eat me. The boy for the rest of the trip was within feet of me, I still think he thinks it was bigfoot  :chuckle: Well at this point it was almost 10 am and the hunt quickly faded. We had dropped at least 2 miles down the ridge into the wilderness so we started out hike out. The rest of that afternoon we hiked around the top side of some meadows and only saw a couple cows but we did get into some great late season huckleberries!!! That evening we hooked up with a couple other guys from this site and went back into my spot and got a couple bulls below the clearcut to bugle so they chased them around until after dark, we had no luck in our spot, we sat for a couple hours quietly just listening, the only thing we could hear was the wind.  Sunday morning rolled around and we went back in and it was quiet again, I had blown it from the day before, happy with my experiences but sick at all the mistakes I had made over the last couple days we hiked back out.

(continued) The other guys that had went in with us that morning must of been having the same luck because they had already left. We decided that we would just head back down and break camp and get a good start home. About 2 miles out of our camp on the way down we had 3 cows and a spike run across the road on us and I chased them and had a 50 yard shot on the spike, came to draw and never let the arrow go, probable should have, I'm really good at that distance but all I could think of was my monster that I had been chasing. I guess I get to eat tag soup the rest of the year but I have the memories of that nice bull. It kills guys that I go hunting with when I pass animals up but I tell them that its part of hunting and conservation. That's how you get the big ones!!! Its worked for me whitetail hunting, one of these years it will work elk hunting. The kid I took had the time of his life, I probable would have done better without him but he was able to experience elk for the first time and so many other firsts in the woods as well and that's what really made my hunt. I can't wait until I get to chase them again, now its time to focus on my 170"+ inch whitetail for the year.  ;)
