This will be my official page on this hunt, my quest to take an archery state record with a bow, keep you informed and follow along much as phool did last year. Will be heading up to scout this weekend
-
Congrats on the draw. Look forward to reading about your quest.
-
already have 2 spots to start scouting that held 150 class moose last year
-
This should make for a good read. What is the state archery record?
-
Best of luck to you Shane, guess I will have to start a thread about my quest for a Selkirk Moose!
-
SWEET, congrats on the great tag Shane. Look forward to the journey.
-
Rename the post SHANE(WA) 2009 Hangman Moose Hunt so it's easier to follow.
Best of luck!!!
-
Will do
-
Good luck enjoy the ride. And remember we like lots of pictures.
-
Awesome Shane can't wait to follow along.
-
Congrats on the tag Shane! Looking forward to the oddessy! Thanks for taking us along!
(...and if you don't break the state record for archery moose, maybe you can break the site record for number of pages on an archery moose thread!) :chuckle:
-
just might LOL
-
I expect nothing less than 180 Shane ;)
-
Awesome, take lots of pics, even during your scouting, we like pics.
-
Be damn close to a world record with a bow at 180, Summer scouting will tell me exactly what I have to work with on size 170 is a goal
-
Can't wait for the stories Shane, congrats on the draw
-
Thanks for doing this - remember, a picture is worth 1,000 words (don't want your release fingers to cramp up...)
-
Congrats Shane I'm glad it stuck for you! 8) We worked hard on that bull last year that was a 160+ for Phool and he had him at 20 yards several times with no shot cause it was soooo thick :( I am hoping for better luck for ya on yours!!! :)
-
Thanks guys . My goal is 170 but if the unit just isn't holding the bull I am looking for I will have to settle for less, a bull with a wow factor is what I am looking for. Lots of scouting ahead of me 3 months, hopefully it will turn up a bull or 2 :-)
-
Awesome Shane can't wait to read all the posts. If you need any help let me know I am within about 10 min of the hangman unit. Good Luck
-
Thanks coop
-
Have fun. Here are a couple pictures from last year on the Hangman moose hunt.

-
Well done Shane!!! Can't wait to follow this thread. It's always fun to follow along on some elses hunt. Makes you almost feel like you drew the tag yourself....well....maybe not but it's fun anyway :)
Good luck,
Fulla
-
Awesome!!! Good Luck
-
Shane(WA)
I am going to try to attach a photo of a friend's moose he killed last year on Mica Peak. He came over from the west side - I showed him around a little bit and he got this one on the second day (if I remember right).
It was very foggy up there that day.
-
Good luck takes lots of pics
-
this is the hangman unit, its 1 mt and thats about it, access is difficult, quads or bikes only 1 to 2 ways in and thats it.
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi200.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Faa139%2Fshanewa300%2F1245082902.jpg&hash=79c56c11334a599310dd4293552b1f61a951b08d)
-
I can't wait to see the 200" your going to kill :hello:
-
that Mt should be called fog mt, the upper half is consumed with fog from mid Oct thru winter, I have been up Saturday night and this morning in a new spot, lots of sign, yet to see a moose lol
-
I would hope, but a 200" may not exist up there, cant kill one if they arent there, now 180 is possible, talked to a few guys who saw 160+ bulls up there in the last 2 years, my dad saw a giant 2 yrs ago in a secret honey hole spot, I went there today and checked it out ;)
-
but a 200" may not exist up there, cant kill one if they arent there
I think that was the point of our arguement a year or so back......LOL May I remind you....
There isnt a trip to these mountains where i dont see big bulls.200 inches is being fair
-
I do see big bulls, most of these giants are in Huckleberry,49 and selkirk we bowunt these areas alot for elk over the last 20 yrs. I quit bowhunting mica about 4 yrs ago, i know this mountain since we hunted it since I was a little guy, I know where to go, and have seen some dandy bulls up there, just saying if there isnt one there I cant kill it, I am going to kill the biggest bull that mountain has to offer this year
-
(https://hunting-washington.com/cpg/albums/userpics/10123/16.gif).
-
I believe ya, it just surprises me if you see 200 inch bulls often in these units, you must have really had a hankerin to hunt hangman if its only got 170 bulls on it.
hangman, huck, selkirk and 49 in that order, I want hangman
-
Draw odds are way better on hangman, I want a moose tag, no brainer to
Put in for a unit with the best odds, I know the unit better than the others, yeah I have seen giants in other units, but at the same time I haven't spent any time on mica in the last 5 yrs, I know the moose pop as been booming up there, excellent nutrition up there and rich soil.
-
You could just buy some sheds off ebay and screw them on a skull that's how I'd do it if I wanted a 200" bull.
-

I'm never gonna draw a tag, thats not a bad idea................... :chuckle:
-
Ya better get your salt blocks, corn feeders and cameras going right now!

I remember those statements and some bashing of another tag holder.
I wish you luck, but you have big boasts to fill.
-
He will come up with a 200" er if he has to go to Canada or private land to get it. :chuckle:
-
i think it's called put up or shut up time.
this ought to be interesting. i got the popcorn going.
you couldnt tag a big bull? give me a break.I see 2 or 3 50" bulls every time I am in there.
Sounds like a lame hunter to me
If I draw a tag here I will shoot a state record and hopefully a world record
My buddy has a set that scored around 200". If it was down to the last 2 days I would shoot that bull
I cant even begin to grasp the concept of hunting 30 days and couldnt shoot a big bull, all I have to say is WOW and what a disappointment for the hunter.
i can do this all night...but it might be easier to just post a link...naahh..
shane...it takes a lot to post all that crap and then come hear asking for people's input and advice. good luck to you.

Good luck man. Looking forward to all the special draw stories!
-
Jackelope that was 3 yrs ago!!! lol and was refering to some posts about a hunt lol sorry hunting 30 straight days and couldnt tag a decent bull not like he was holding out for a absolute monster. so u take out of context out of a conversaation 3 yrs ago and post pieces, sounds like todays media :chuckle:
-
Shane,
Hope you don't have to settle for one as "small" as this: :chuckle: :chuckle:
-

maybe i should post the link if you don't like the pieces or taking stuff out of context.
that thread on another site where you made those comments was a year and a half ago...not 3. not that that makes any difference. sounded to me by reading the story that the hunter was hunting A single bull they had seen early on in the hunt.
-
MM WAS AT LEAST 2 1/2 YRS AGO AT LEAST, MAYBE WE COULD BRING UP LIES OF OTHERS ON HERE AND POST THEM WHILE WE ARE AT IT OR RUMORS THEY HEARD AND POSTED! I AM PRETTY CLOSE TO ENDING THIS THREAD FOR GOOD, WILL POST PIC AT END OF MY HUNT AND CALL IT GOOD!
-
Shane (WA)
You know how to get in to the "deep canyon" through Idaho ? I do !
Happy to show you or take you in.
Great discussion so far !!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
I cant even begin to grasp the concept of hunting 30 days and couldn't shoot a big bull, all I have to say is WOW and what a disappointment for the hunter.
Hey Shane, was this post about me? If so, you should know I was not disappointed!!! I found the bull I was looking for and stayed on him to the end, in the end the bull won but I have memories to last me a lifetime and am not disappointed. I ended up with a great bull and am proud that I stuck to my goal. The fact that he had dropped means nothing to me, it was all about the hunt and the time and memories I spent with family and good friends while doing it. I will never forget that hunt, and have a large debt to pay to those that helped me along the way, but never will I feel "disappointed" ;)
-
i copied and pasted the date and time the thread was started on MM:
Sep-10-07, 08:28 PM (MST)
the thread got random replies up to sept 2008.
it is june of 09 right now...not sure how that adds up to 3 years ago.
:dunno:
-
Good God, just remember if you make a mistake or post some thing on here that is questionable it will brought up and rubbed in your face at the appropriate time! :dunno:
Lets move on with it! :twocents:
Looking forward to your reports Shane! :hello:
-
I think it's just that you came accross poorly in that MM thread Shane. Say you are sorry, full of crap, or drunk when you posted it and let's move on. Hopefully reality has set in and you realize you aren't going to just walk up there and shoot a 200" bull.
Good luck on the hunt and hopefully you can get past this issue and enjoy the hunt for what it is, not for the score. There are a lot of impressive looking 140" moose out there. Score isn't important in moose hunting as it doesn't really correlate well to the biggest or most impressive looking bull. If you get hung up on score you probably won't have a very memorable experience.
-
Man, I love this bar.
Shane - Please do keep posting stories and pics. The sad reality is most of us will never draw a OIL tag and living vicariously through friends and internet stories is about as close as we'll come to a real moose kill.
-
Shane, you tag a big bull that makes you happy, I'll be standing at the front of the line to congratulate you and shake your hand. good luck man.
-
NAH, go after the king of the mountain shane!!!!!
show these guys that you mean what you say!!!!
:stirthepot:
-
Yep Chris! ;) hopefully you will be along when it happens! I think everyone who has drawn this tag has hunted just the mountain the starr rd access. That just limits you to the mountain , so much more to this unit. I am after a wow factor type bull, if it means a big unique bull that scores like crap oh well, score isn't all, I have in my mind what I want.I am spending just about every free day I can scouting, I am confident that we will find THAT bull. Thanks to all that have offered to help and the words of encourgement , u know who you are :-)
-
Score is just a number..... I hope you find the one that does it for you!! When you do, you will know it and who cares what he scores. Good luck!!
-

Shane, we are going to kill a monster! no doubt in my mind!
I already got people looking in area of that unit that other people dont even think of hunting.
and to make it all even better, we are going to get it on film, so all the doubters can watch on their TV's :IBCOOL:
Matt Alwine!... VIA Chrises Account
-
damn right! well you know then I will get the photoshopped or edited, its a no win situation :chuckle:
-

we probly will have to photoshop the moose just to get all the antlers to fit one one picture!!!!
-
remain with in reason.
that wouldnt be any fun would it?
-
it might look somethin like this whwn we got done
-
It's not big enough :chuckle:
-
Good God, you've already got 5 pages for this hunt, and it's not even July, yet. Don't forget that when you have Chris along that you've got to make him bring the beer; otherwise yours will mysteriously disappear into thin air!
This sounds like a truly once-in-a-lifetime event that you guys are planning. I hope you can pick and choose through the critters until you find what you want. Don't forget to start saving now for the $1500 taxidermy bill that's probably coming.
Good Luck!
-
LOL u know chris ,Todd? I will make sure to keep your advice :chuckle: I know this thing is long already , quite amusing really, having blast already with the tag ,riding mt bikes in 10 miles this Saturday to a spot, no motorized vehicles, dragging girlfriend with :)
-
Make sure and post pics of your girlfriend. :chuckle:

-

-
I haven't posted on this one yet, but man I sure hope you get a good one. Congrat's on the tag. Can't wait to see where this trip take's all of us. Good luck.

I go to church with Ken and he told me That he did see bigger bulls just could not close the deal.
anyway good luck Shane
-
I think I would be slipping Ken a G and having him point one out ;)
-
Funny phool :chuckle:Can't see pic, must be my phone not opening it. I am not even scouting this mountain, every single tag holder hunts the starr rd access. The same moose get hunted year in and year out, if I want the giant it's not coming from that mt.
-
How bout this one would it be a shooter or too small????
-
This topic is going to be 50 pages long before the season starts!
Looking forward to a virtual hunt with you through the end. :rockin:
-
How bout this one would it be a shooter or too small????
With a bow, that had better be a, "Don't think twice."
-
OH YEAH, in a heartbeat! might be starting a new one called the hunt lol
-
I'm betting 180-Grain tags a higher scoring bull :twocents:
-
He just might, oh well, not a pissing contest or is it? :chuckle: what some on here are trying to make it into, I could careless. I guess I could bust out the rifle and take a 500 yard shot accross a canyon, just not what I am looking for in this hunt, I want close up and personal and a experience to remember. If it takes me 45 days to to get one with my bow great, I would rather have all the close encounters and memories. It would be great to tag one the first week, but at the same time I would feel like I didnt use the tag to my fullest addvantage.I would rather end my hunt as you did phool using all the time I had to fill my tag than taking something early in the year that was under my goal. :twocents: lol
-
I'm betting 180-Grain tags a higher scoring bull :twocents:
+1 :chuckle:
-
nope, just saying I could bust out a rifle too, be a hell of alot easier when u start comparing the 2, you tell me whats tougher? :chuckle: This is the whole reason i am bowhunting them, the experience, the close calls, there will be many
-
Shane I think you have the right mind set to getter done just like you plan. You will scout hard and hunt hard and have just the hunt you want. I plan on following your story just like last years on here so good hunting.
-
Just flipping you chit Shane, lord knows you sent shovels full my way the last few months :chuckle:
-
This is better than a soap opera!! Seven pages with 3 1/2 months to go! Seems like both camps are drawing lines in the sand.
-
Looking forward to the pics!!! that calf will be the easiest to pack out!!!!
Shanes bull... subsitute bow for rifle.... :o
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fforums.bowsite.com%2Ftf%2Fpics%2F00small50730121.JPG&hash=1e7043970f849f34c61ac7faa05f66958623705e)
-
dam shane, you are getting alot of grief. i am rooting for you. i dont care what you shoot it with. it will be the hunt of a lifetime for sure. good luck man...
-
It doesnt bother me, just a forum lol if anything it just makes me work that much harder,Went up and hung 3 cams over the weekend, saw a few cow moose. Scored the ultimate place to moose hunt, also a mega elk spot, someone must of knew it was my b-day that day! ;) The guy also offered his tractor and a kawasaki mule to haul out moose, needless to say i will be taking care of this guy no matter where i get a moose, just nice of him to let me access this land.
-
Must be a real tough hunt if you can get a tractor in there.
-
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz............Oh sorry. I must have dozed off. Did Shane kill his moose yet? It's still June you say. Going back to sleep. Wake me up with some worthwhile posting. ;)
-
Her goes polar AGAIN lol nothing useful to say again. Oh I forgot if you dont hunt the way polar does its not hunting :chuckle: your a cheater, u use a game cam your a cheater, if you scout your a cheater, it goes on and on, ask him  Oh and the best one of them all if you hunt private property you pretty much are hunting a high fence hunt! you have no idea what I am hunting, its called roads, he lives at the entrance, one way in thats it, he owns that entrance, its all paper land. Now that polar has brought it up, I will turn the guys offer down and pack it out on my back , my bad :chuckle:
-
Must have hit a little too close to home. Someone has some sand in his vj.
-
Nope, gets old hearing your ways, the RIGHT way, your way is your way, sorry I have money for cameras, and time to scout and the balls to knock on doors and gain access to property.
-
now kids cant we all just play nice? :dunno: oh well shane, i would rather "cheat" with cameras and quads and tractors and kill a monster than shoot a dink while really hunting anyways :P
-
2316 views and not even a shot fired yet... :chuckle:
-
2316 views and not even a shot fired yet... :chuckle:
Theres been plenty of "shots" fired........just no bullet/arrow :chuckle:
Needless to say...look forward to the scouting/hunt stories and pics
-
my god please start scouting and give us some pics so the bs will stop. :bash:
-
I have been scouting lol, cant post pics of some areas, no ideas to some of the other tag holders. lots of landmarks in the background. Not hunting the usual starr rd access that 99% of people hunt.
-
Shane (WA)
Glad to see you are using the "other way in". It provides some great opportunities. Although Starr Rd doesn't get too jammed up with Moose tag holders. Will be interesting to see what you get on the cameras.
I am going to try to get back out there and get my cameras up soon. Behind the power curve right now.
Just to let you know, in case I forgot - I did lose a ground blind this year - had been in the same spot for about two years and someone apparently walked off with it this Spring - and it was on some of the "private" stuff !!
-
I have been scouting lol, cant post pics of some areas, no ideas to some of the other tag holders. lots of landmarks in the background. Not hunting the usual starr rd access that 99% of people hunt.
can you say photoshop
-
Pinetree, I am scouting area very few know about, not the weller rd. I will be up that way sometime this summer. That sucks about your blind , I had a stand and game cam taken this spring >:(
-
my god please start scouting and give us some pics so the bs will stop. :bash:
it will take more than a few pictures to stop my bs :P
-
BS miles!!! thats my property!! your lucky i let you on it and let you keep a few sheds!!! but selling my animals? unacceptable
-
Shane(WA)
Thanks for that - guess I am going to get out the maps again and see if I can figure out where you might be! I am going to keep an eye on the state land part of that area - have seen good sign in it and last year had a great encounter with a cow and calf (maybe it has horns this year !) Will stay in touch.
-
thats funny miles :chuckle:
I have been seeing alot of cow moose where I am hangin cams , good thing. Lots of old rubs and sign
-
do you know about the little pond on the north side of mica about half way down the hill
-
Oh yes ! Been by there a couple of times. Nice spot !
-
Shane, Any Bulls yet? We are waiting!!!
-
I talked to a buddy from Pullman that's been scouting this unit 2-3 days a week.... he sent me a pic of a bull in velvet that will undoubtedly be a monster...as big as any Shiras I've laid eyes on :o... so... just a heads up Shane.... he's in there... keep up the hard work and maybe you'll get lucky!!!
-
Checked a cam this morning. 19 days 1 moose pic, very large bodied moose, no clue on size, too close to cam, see the edge of a antler. Tons of moose sign showing up now. While I was riding mt bike down ran into a 40" bull with double brows.
-
Shane, Any Bulls yet? We are waiting!!!
I was wondering the same thing. Thanks for the update Shane.
-
Checking another cam this weekend and hanging another.
-
get after it shane!!!! an let me know when we are going in on the atv!!!!! 8)
bullwinkle is gonna get it!!!!!!!!!
-
Will do chris, need to get up there this month. U will need IEP permit too
-
are those like 40 bucks? i could get one. maybe find a bear up there too for august :IBCOOL:! my quad goes into teh shop this wednesday to be fixed ( carb isues) bu when i get it back we will get out there for sure. maybe next weeknd or the week after. or even a evening after work will work with me.
-
This bull big enough for you :chuckle: Anchorage zoo
-
Cool chris. Matt and I are heading up sometime next week in the evening to glass a mt.
Funny teacherman, that's a non typ, cool looking moose for sure
-
you ever check out the Cheney area? Just off of TurnBull? I have a buddy that lives out there I will shoot him an email and see what he thinks. He lives for hunting also.
-
hey shane here is a pic of the bull i told you about, not as big as i remember :bash: oh well...
-
Yes IEP permits are $35-40 and good for a year on ALL of their land.
-
I have thought about Cheney area , I have some friends out there keeping a eye out for me. Lots of water out there for sure, problem is it's extremly hard to scout, it's flat and all private. Only way I will even consider is if someone spots a giant out there , I would go out and check it out and try to obtain permission. All my scouting is concentrated in the mica range right now.
Cool looking bull chris! I would like to see what he looks like this year. Thanks for getting that!
-
Right on, good luck.
-
Shane, there aint no moose in that unit!!!! just give up!!!
-
Shane, there aint no moose in that unit!!!! just give up!!!
Nope, there is one.

Nope, there is one.

You have never heard of the Whinery? oh shane! get out more!

there is no way i can be the lowest member... shane dont even know what it is!!!!
just cuz he can kill a moose doesnt put him above me!!! :IBCOOL:
-
so shane, I presume you have scouted the marsh on top. I have found the big boys only hang out in 3 or 4 places up there. I presume you have found that offshoot that with a spotting scope can see most every thing up there.
Don't for get to practice breaking brush. I presume you have gone up from the wa side and the Id side. Personally I liked the Id side. Don't forget to go north from the 5 corners on the Id side. You have to be careful not to cross the park boundary.
-
Havent been on top, been going in from ID side tho, have a cam hangin in there. Did see a nice bull tho saturday, close to 50" double brow on one side and triple on the other, been glassing the south side.
-
matt doesnt even know what it is :chuckle:
It is a Elite group of Outdoor enthusiast with one supreme leader.... DUH!
Hey Chris, I think I just came up with a slogan :IBCOOL:

SHANE about this bull from last saturday... is he a good one or do you need my and matts approval before deciding? :IBCOOL:
dont go making these decisions on your own now :bdid:. VERY IMPORTANT!!!!
-
Matt would tell me to let it fly on a 30" bull as long as he gets it on film :chuckle:

A big bull killed off camera, yeah thats alright.. BUT any bull killed on film lives FOREVER!

-
Thanks! got AM spot all figured out, alwinearcher has all the batts charged up to film the hunt and all the moose we encounter ;)
-
Hows the calling doing? I found out last year that bulls calls are the best to bring them in. I had a bull comimg and thought I'd heat him up with a cow call. All it did was piss off a cow and she started calling at him and he turned back to her. Just like pissing off a hen turkey. :bdid:
-
just a phone call away when you need help hawling him out - good luck !!!!!!!!!
-
Havent called to any bulls yet, been windy this last week, calmed down now and i didnt want to run the risk of calling in a big bull and educating him.
will do pinetree, if I dont have help, looks like I have alwinearcher, bullblaster, brother, dad and myself all packing if needed. I dont think the hunt will end in the next 14 days, it better be big or unique ;)
-
Will you be hunting tomorrow?
-
Have fun. Sounds like great weather for the opener. Last year it was 80 degrees on the opener.
-
I will be out tomorrow, will be hunting for the next 2 weeks almost :-)
-
Possibly see you tomorrow, if you see a gal on a Rancher that's my wife.
-
good luck shane, hopefully you stick a monster bull tomorrow, just make sure hes the one you want though, dont turn down anything you might regret having turned down later
-
Cool, I will keep an eye out for you
-
Good luck Shane. Can't wait for the story and pictures..

Well opening morning started out with a bang litteraly. Myself and Alwine archer headed out at 5 am. We arrived at our spot made our way towards the vantage point we wanted to glass from . It didn't take long the creek bottom was full of bull grunts, atleast 3 bulls, finally a big one stepped out, we decided this bull was big enough to pursue. We decended off the mountain , straight to the bottom up the other side, while doing all this we broke alot of branches, it caught the bulls attention. He ended up coming to us and beat us to the logging road we were after, he came to 23 yards and stood around for 10 min, so we skirted the road and try to pop up farther down, he followed! 30 yards now, staring at paddles for what seemed like forever. The bull lost interest and moved up the hill accross the road and began to paralell the road , we watched him for the next hour at 80-120 yards, frusturating to say the least . Then we saw a cow finally, he was following her, she went accross a opening at 80 yards, we rushed up to cut distance hoping the big bull would come by following her, nothing he went higher up. We then climbed higher, hitting another road we walked down it, alwinearcher spots the bull broadside at 50 yards! Bull disappears and walks straight away outta range! And outta sight.we decided to rush the bull , come over hump there he is, 70 yards! Still too thick, but there is a dip and cover , he can't see us! Let's go fast, I knock arrow pop over rise thinking this is it, no bull , hunters !! Oh no, bull had spooked and went out in the open , well to end this the bull was killed . We videoed helped drag the bull down took pics , I will let them
post there story . After about a hour chatting with them and congrats we moved on, go around corner and call, stuff starts breaking , moose we move closer the cow is moaning non stop! No bull grunts . After about 10 min we here bull, they would not come in open, finally the bull shows, 48" bull nice paddles no fronts! We passed and began a 3 hour walk back to truck! We were beat! The evening we went up and check sone different spots, no sign no moose. Day 1 was alot of fun , congrats to Zach for dandy bull!! Well we are off to a new spot tomorrow, bullblaster will be joining us.
-
sounds like a great opener we can't wait we head to mt spokane sunday or monday for my cousin by marriage younger brothers cow tag we are pumped up

Maybe you did but did you grunt at the bull? This time last year they came in like a dog on a leash.
-

What a story huh Shane. Believe me, if we had known you had been chasing that bull, we would have not killed him. Kind of weird huh, all that area and we bump into you guys that way. Sure didn't plan it that way. We want to thank you guys for helping out and being as excited as we were. Seeing your guy's determination and attitude you should do just fine. As we both know there are some big bulls up there. Keep at it, and keep us posted.

-
:o grats
-
:o Holy chit shane..thanks for your post. You have changed my perspective on what it means to get a oil moose tag. before following your quest for a monster bull moose I was willing to settle for a small bull (if I ever get drawn). You did all your homework and it paid off in spades. Weather you know it or not you have made an impact on how I look at oil tags. Thank you for opening my eyes a little. THAT IS A DAMN FINE MOOSE.
-
holy crap! :yike:awesome bull , congrats shane. where's the story or video?

-
Well day 2 came much too fast, beat tired from the day before we headed out. We went to a new spot that am and upon arrival it was super windy began to rain heavily. We got to our vantage point and began to glass, we picked out a cow and calf immediately, then a small bull appeared below us.Rain continued come down and low clouds began to settle in, we spotted another cow, no bull in sight with her. At this time we decided to bail on this spot and decided to head to cheney area and look for some moose, this trip turned out to show no moose. We then met up with Chris(bullblaster) kinda down on our luck we headed back up to Mica peak.We got up there kinda late, unloaded quad and headed up.The area we wanted to hunt was right on the edge of the fog line, we parked the quad and began to walk down the rd, calling and listening, nothing super quiet. We decided to head farther around to the next drainge, about half way into our walk Chris says moose, we look and there is a cow and calf just below us.Matt gets the video camera out and begins to get footage of the 2 moose that seem to have no care in the world that we are standing here, we decided to mess with them and call to them and see what they would do.I grab my moose call and grunt, this is when it got interesting in a hurry, first grunt and about 10 yards behind the cow the ferns and tall grass began to move with a mess of antlers, there was a giant bull bedded there, he stood and stared at us ! packs were flying to get into position for a shot, tripod up for the camera. Bull was at 57 yards and quartering hard at us, we waited for close to 10 min for the bull to turn, the cow began to leave he took a step forward and stopped he was now broadside, I drew my bow settled my 60 pin low and let her rip, for what seemed like an eternity for the arrow to get there I could see the arrow sink in right behind the shoulder, bull gasped and stood motionless, almost if he was going down in seconds, he then bolted 10 yards I grunted, stopping him at 62 quartering away, I reached for my arrows and nocked another, drew and smoked him again, 3 inched from the last arrow, that was it he staggered and crashed to the ground right there! we were in shock and disbeleif that this all just happened. We gathered and made our way down to the bull, complete pass thrus on the bull, one arrow was burried in a stump ! Thanks to all who supported me and sent words of encouragement, this hunt was a blast even tho it only lasted 2 days! we were prepared to hunt this out till Novemeber, never thinking we would come upon 2 big bulls in 2 days! ;)
-
Great story Shane. were you shooting shuttle Ts ?
-
awsome story thanks a bunch for sharing it all with us that can't seem to draw a tag :bash: :bash: :bash:
are we goingt to get a total " count out of you yet? maybe see some video?
-
Great story and again great bull! Congrats
-
Nice job Shane!!! Cant wait to hear some measurements!!
-
WOW! Awesome story! It's awesome how you guys found two moose of that caliber in just two days time, I'm impressed! Can't wait to see the videos and hear a green score (especially because I know nothing about scoring moose). Great job!
-
Way to cool!
Shane a damn good taxidermist lives your neck of the woods. Let me know if you wanta check out his work!! Infact I believe he's putting the finishing touches on a Wa bull moose as we speak. He's the best I've ever seen. And I've seen alot!
Let me know..
Congrats!!!!
-
From what I'm seein them two bulls are spooky similiar in a totally "dope" kinda way!!!!
I wonder if they are brothers?
If so the big one is still out there!! haha :)
-
great moose...congrats
-
WOW!! Congrats!! :yike:
-
shutle T's yes! the holes were HUGE, we could see blood pumping out from where we shot
-
Great looking Bull Shane! Congrats!
-
Great looking bull Shane! Congrats!.
-
shag who is the taxi? I need to get cape in to atleast be prepped and tanned, its so big that its in my freezer packed in, I am better off leaving it out tonight with the low temps
-
width is 41" one of the oddest looking bulls for sure, if you look head on at him paddles are straight inline and the almost do a 90 after the brow and straight back, if his paddles lay out as normal be way wider, his left side is huge and right is way weak
-
green score?
and also any animal is a trophy with a bow he is a great looking moose and i don't think anyone will argue that
-
Hell of a moose! Congrats!
-
PM on the way.
-
Wow! Great bulls guys!!
-
Great Bull! Congratulations on a great hunt.
-
Dunno yet, super busy day just really relaxed finally, measured a few measurements, figuring a gross in mid 160's 35" paddle on one side, right is hurting him
-
Way to get it done!
-
:o wow excellent bullwinkle! Congrats.
-
right on!! congrats!
-
Shane (WA)
Have you put a tape on the horns yet ??
I am thinking Pope and Young !!!!!!!!!!
Loved the story and now that you have confirmed the location,
I think I know exactly where you were at.
I am so very very pleased that you and Zack got your critters.
Larry
-
Sorry
Just found the initial measurements on the other thread.
Still waiting for a complete score.
-
Shane, congrats on the bull! Nice meeting you and your buddies when we were going up for the 2nd half of my wifes cow. I think you guys were just around the corner from us (literally 400 yards or so, the trail to the left?), we heard some whoopin and hollering at around 6 or so that night, must have been you guys, and your truck was still at the bottom at 7:30 when we were heading out. How about that hail/sleet storm, fun eh?
Also, nice meeting you too Elkspert, and you too Ridgerat. Hope your buddy gets his before he heads home.
All in all, a great hunt!!! Too bad we can't do this each year.
-
yeah that woulda been us, we shot at 5 pm
no kidding about doing this every year! lotta fun :IBCOOL:
-

-
Lets get a score on that big boy.
-
Score means nothing Shane, be content with a great hunt. 41" spread, not likely it reaches the 150" mark but who cares, nice bull.
-
We thought that was you guys, we almost drove out that trail just to see what the commotion was about, but the hail hit us and we decided to head back. Congrats again, everytime you see that rack it will remind you of everything about this trip. I need to win the Raffle so I can do this with my bow next time. Or an Alaska trip......... Today will be spent butchering up the rest of the wifes cow.
-
Awesome hunt and moose Shane!!! you really put your work in for this one!
glad i could be there to experience that with you!! that was one of the coolest hunts i have been on and i didnt even get to shoot anything!!! i am lookin forward to some tasty moose meat!!!! great job man!
with 33 inch paddles and 10 inch paddle width, 8 points a side and the 41 inch spread and 6 inch bases, this bull should go mid 150's.
awesome!!!
and how bout that pack? are you recovered yet? that was probly the toughest pack any of us have ever had to pack... :P
-
scored bull, 158 7/8 gross amd 155 3/8 net, bull had everything but width! 41" hurt him bad
-
I am beat :chuckle:
-
What a bull.. Nice job. Actually great job especially with a bow. Did i see a video camera in one of those guys hands? Lets see it.
-
, Good job, Nice bull
-
Very nice bull! Congrats!!
-
it will be on a dvd
;)
-
158 with only a 41" spread, thats outstanding. Take it to the sportsman show this year and get it officially scored, it will make the Washington book.
-
yep, if the paddles woulda layed how they typical do the spread woulda pushed the bull close to 170, hes got the paddles of a 170 type bull 33" and 35"

Can't see the pics at work, but congratulations Shane!! I'll have to look later...
-
sure can, I have some out for matt and myself now, just got done wrapping the backstraps and tenderloins, 86 steaks lol
-
Well the Washington book only has gross scores, and I seem to remember Bow4elk telling me that there are no net scores for Shiras when he was scoring my sheds. According to the book Shane would have the new #1 archery bull in Washington if his score is accurate. The current #1 is 157 1/8 and #2 is Dougs at 144 5/8. So congrats are in order Shane, you not only spanked Dougs but you have the new Washington State record.
-
thanks anyway Rob.
-
Thats a FINE looking bull. Great story, and with a bow!
Congrats man.
-
no nets for moose!? are they to big and would rip through? :chuckle:
if that is the case then Shane is even cooler than i already thought he was!
of course his guide and spotter had a lot to do with it... :IBCOOL:
-
sure can, I have some out for matt and myself now,
what? none for me? :'(
-
there's a net score for moose.
-
there's a net score for moose.
I thats the case Ridge then he will likely end up #2
-
thats alot of cutting............ :chuckle:
-
Outstanding Bull Shane, Congrats!!!!! :IBCOOL:
-
Oh I have some for you chris, we are thinking of heading to metalline to muzzy elk hunt this week, be the nights dinner! :)
-
keep up the string and go smoke a elk!! im excited to try some of that moose meat!
-
Awesome Bull! Congrats
-
there's a net sc :)ore for moose.
I thats the case Ridge then he will likely end up #2
he will always be #1 in my book :)
the amazing thing about shanes bull is the fact that if that bull wasn't a heavy timber bull causeing his paddles to grow up rather then out... Shanes bill would of broke the record by a solid 15"
-
Might be one of the only 40" bull to make Boone and crocket :chuckle:
-
no nets for moose!? are they to big and would rip through? :chuckle:
if that is the case then Shane is even cooler than i already thought he was!
of course his guide and spotter had a lot to do with it... :IBCOOL:
haha, I always thought deer antlers would rip nets up to... This scoreing thing is tuff to figure out!
-
WOW! What a GREAT bull Shane!!! An ultimate CONGRATS to you and the crew....VERY IMPRESSIVE!!!!
-
I am extremely happy anyway it scores, I got the bull I wanted , big , long, wide paddles and a odd bull in one, and a old bull for sure, huge split ear and punctures all over his face, deffinately a old bull! And I got it with my bow which I really wanted to do!! And we couldn't of asked for a better sequence of events to be captured on film! Awesome hunt ! And couldn't of been better spent with a couple of good friends :)
-
tonights dinner, tenderloin, damn good ;)

I figured you'd get a goodun, all your scouting, etc. Thats better than good! Nice work man.
-
just wanted to share another pic of shane and his bull! this couldnt have happened to a better guy!
thanks again Shane for letting me be a part of this EPIC ADVENTURE!!!
-
How are you measuring the palm length?
-
Hey good job Shane, watched and read the first couple posts and thought this guy is going to get his bull and sure enough you did, way to go- food for the year... Who cares about scores, he is a fine animal to mount for any den or above anyones fireplace.... Again great job and a very nice bull....
-
Congrats Shane he's a great looking bull with plenty of wall appeal that's for sure! If your scores stand up I'll have to give you a  too cause you called it and said you were going to shoot the State record with a bow!!! But I'll wait until I see the official scorer for that one ;) I hope it stands for you! Can you post your measurements? I think some are skeptical that a 41" can score that high and it would be nice to put those to rest now!!! Nice job to your Sherpas too ... I know what that's like! :chuckle: Again congrats on a fine moose no matter what the score! :)
-
How are you measuring the palm length?
when i was there we measured from inside the farthest forward fork down and then turned straight toward the inside of the farthest back fork.

I'm not expert on moose but this bull is impressive by any standard. Sure, I'd love to put a tape to that rack but no record book score can compare to the memories made on a great hunt, with good people, and having it all come together. Truly the definition of Once In a Lifetime.
-
sure can, I have some out for matt and myself now, just got done wrapping the backstraps and tenderloins, 86 steaks lol
yayyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Great bulls guys!!!!
-
Wow. That is a huge bull. Didn't take you long to drop him.
-
Very nice bull shane,Congrats!
-
Congrats on a decent bull!!
-
What a good bull. Love those fronts.
-
Finally! I picture I can see on my work computer!! Great bull SHane. Way to make the tag work for you! 8)

As I said before awesome bull Shane, not that 200 incher but more realistically what a giant is in this state.
There is a net for moose so not sure what thats all about....but I wonder about your score for the only reason that the one side is so much bigger than the other.
scored bull, 158 7/8 gross amd 155 3/8 net, bull had everything but width! 41" hurt him bad
I'd think that there would be a MUCH larger gap between gross and net. No matter, the bull is awesome, just talking score with you. If that one side matched :yike: and as you said width.
I figured 8x8 (16)with 10 inch paddles....smallest of the two (20) 7 inch mass (14) 26 paddle lengths (52) and 41 width (41) ........biggest guess on the paddle lengths. One side is way longer than the other. Add 2 inches for good measure.
145 bull.
-
If that one side matched and as you said width.
No kidding, its still going to look good on the wall. Is Charlie mounting it Shane?
The other thing I want to know is how it eats? Some have posted that theirs were tough and didn't taste that good, I have found that if you cook to med. rare its tender as long as you don't let it sit and cool for a long period, how were those tenderloins? No complaints on how mine eats.
-
Im still kinda upset it isnt 200 inches......... :(
:P

heck, he would probably still be holding out for a 200" bull if he didn't have a camera man yelling at him insisting he shoot ;-)

:chuckle:
-
Awesome Bull, Congrats
-
I see that you posted your Moose story & pics on Monster Muleys Dude you're getting called out !!!!!!!! P.S is that better M-Ray ?
-
I see that you posted your Moose story & pics on Monster Muleys Dude you're getting slammed!!!!!!!
I wouldnt call it slammed I would say nothing more than being called out on his own comments. So far from what I have seen everyone has done nothing more than quote him and ask questions which he is not answering. I have always maintained he has a fine bull that will look good on the wall!
-
Great MOOSE FACE
-
An excellent trophy with a bow and arrow. I would be down right happy with that and would not worry a bit about the score. Congratulations!

Best of luck on your endeavor Alwine, looking forward to viewing it. I only hope your editor has the sense to amend comments that might otherwise diminish your credibility right out the gate.
