-
Holy smokes. What a deer. Incredible mount!

That’s awesome!what a impressive buck.Do you know what it scored?
-
What a giant!! With character to boot  Great work!
-
Dam !!!
-
Bomber buck. Holy moly.
-
Huge buck! South Oregon north cali blacktail should be in a different catagory, they may be in the same family, but are no way like a Washington blacktail. What did this buck score?
-
MASHER!!!
The mount looks beautiful.
-
What a beautiful buck!
-
Dayum, looks half caribou
-
Damn! It would have taken me twenty minutes to get as much as a, "hell yeah," out after putting a hand on that deer. Wow!
-
There's just nothing like a big buck with character!
-
Magnificent!
-
WOW!!! Anyone every see height like that, impressive!
-
Another fantastic mount. What a beauty!
-
Good genetics in that area. World record rosie bull from N. Cal. and this BT from S. OR. Growing them big in that country.

Should have looked myself.. thanks though! Forgot about that one..
-
Haha. Yeah these are blacktails that get me excited even. :o
-
OK, so I have seen a lot of BT trophies, but there is NOTHING like that in the Puget Sound region. A different animal for sure.
Unbelievably beautiful!

Exactly! Ive been saying that for decades. Those are not the same deer as a peninsula buck or North western WA. Almost like trying to lump a sitka buck with a WA peninsula buck and saying they are the same
-
I am not sure we are quite there yet :dunno:......
This buck scored 172 and change. PNW heckles in the trophy BT thread scored 14 points less after deductions. Gross scores very well may have been closer, start talking water displacement and things might get real interesting. In addition, it sounds like Heckles buck may not have been killed on his best year.
I agree there are distinct physical differences, but the same can be said for a mule deer from Sonora and one from Saskatchewan. A buck from eastern Montana can look significantly different than a buck from the Sawtooth range. But they are both mule deer.
I am not a scientist so can't tell you when genetic diversity and habitat adaptation start to blur into subspecies creation. But I am glad we have the diversity of habitat and genetic differences, it keeps it fun.

172...meh...I have blacktails that score at least that much.

Only problem is it takes about 10 of them altogether! :chuckle:

That buck might score 10 points higher but the buck in this thread has more WOW factor in my opinion. This is just an amazing looking specimen in my opinion...

Damn Tejay!! You should have pointed that out when I was picking out a coues form the other day!! Steve

Best taxidermy this side of the Mississippi

.
I wish the genetics were still there.
I live in the area and there is plenty of private land, restricted access, etc. to grow some serious mashers..
.
Plenty of deer, but even the backyard bucks don't seem to have the genetics of the world record.
.
Don't get me wrong, the "locals" still talk about seeing decent bucks.
But. "The King"?
.
Honestly, you hear more about big bear in people's yards at the Adna Grange than big blacktail deer.

Dang, that is a great buck. Awesome taxi work too

Makes me wonder if the logging changes (herbicide spraying) have played a part in quality of animals since the record buck was taken. Can’t get the most out of genetics if the food diversity isn’t there right? FYI I’m not anti logging, just thinking out loud

Used to be a lot more oak woodland, prairie, open conifer forest, broadleaf riparian forest, and other good blacktail habitats before suburban encroachment, intensive forest management, wetland draining, more and more roads, fire suppression, etc., etc., not to mention more hunting pressure.
I've seen a good number of blacktail antlers from the 1960s and before, and they have mass and size that would be notable today! I'm glad there are still some big bucks out there today.
