Probably my best buck though I have another wt that is similar. Ironic part was this was a quick "meat hunt" trip where my old man and I were planning to try and fill one of two tags with first legal buck we saw. Ended up both killing bucks by mid afternoon and headed home that evening.

Great thread thus far, you all have gotten some fantastic deer

I'd like to read that thread again, isn't that the buck that landed on a tree bone?
A true WA giant.
I miss all your write ups of your high country bowhunts with the traditional bow, those were some epic adventures.

didn’t you have that buck entered in a the heads and horns competition at the Yakima sportsman show several years ago? If I remember right you won first place.
-
My biggest
-
That was a different buck Ridge. Yes Teanaway, and also managed to win the Glenn St Charles award. That was a wonderful event. We got to sit and eat dinner with Larry D Jones. This buck was grossed bigger, but didn’t net as well. So I suppose it was a toss up. In my mind The last one was the biggest. I got this one with a compound and not with a longbow.

I think I posted this buck before on the forum but don't remember where? This is the only photo I have, taken by the newspaper, I didn't have a camera with me when we were hunting. I was in my teens, I had watched this buck many times through the summer and was lucky enough to see him on the second Saturday of early season. A single texas heart shot as he was running straight away, but he went a little ways and it took an hour to find him, one of the worst hours of my life. After watching him through the summer and then being able to find him during season, this is still one of my most prized trophies.
There were two other bucks of roughly equal size with him, but my friend (on his first day going hunting ever) got buck fever and tried to shoot but forgot to take off his safety.

2018 draw tag. Lasted a whole whopping 20mins on the first day

That is pretty awesome! So much character, the genetics in the NE corner are definitely there is the animals are given enough time.

the second eye guards are considered an extra point so the H2 measurement would take place at the narrowest point between the G1 and G2 just as if the second eye guard wasn't there.

That's a bruiser Dale! The whitetail I posted on the first page was mounted by Scott's Taxidermy as well. He did good work. Almost 40 years later mine still looks pretty good...

I've only seen one other buck over the years that had double horizontal stickers like that on Kirkl's buck. 2005, mid-August, my hunting partner and I were looking for a new spot to camp and were about 5000 foot elevation on the mountain we've been hunting for years. We had a buck come tearing down a trail, stop stare at us and turned around and went back up the trail. The double stickers almost identical to that was what caught both of our eyes. That's the only other buck I've ever seen like it. A few years later, my hunting partner found the skull and horns in a watering hole below our camp and though he was just a shell of what he once had been, he still had the double stickers on his frame. We hoped he passed those genes on but we never saw another buck similar on the mountain. What a dandy! That's a true, "buck of a lifetime!"

My daughter Leisha’s and my daughter Kayla’s best Washington bucks. Both grossed over 180. Some of ya have seen these before. I can’t make up my mind on my best Washington buck. I’ll keep thinking……

Some great bucks on here!
Sadly, I’ve never killed a big buck in my home state.

I don’t believe that statement. No big whitetail in the past few years?

Nothing like on this thread. Washington does have some impressive deer!
When I was in high school, we had a kids move to Colfax from Entiat. He would always try to get me to go back hunting with him…you could still hunt in November back then. He was not a particularly good hunter, but one year he came back with a “migrator”. It was 30” wide and probably an upper 180’s deer. I wish I would have done that but I was too caught up in the local Palouse deer hunting community.

The thread is “your best buck”, not the biggest bucks in the state :chuckle:. From what I remember, your buck was/is a freaking tank of an eight point and I want to see another picture of it, dang it!
And don’t we all wish we could go back in time and take up someone on a hunting offer. I was caught up in a whitetail hunt for a few years that I was dedicated to, that ended roughly and during that time had offers to go do elk things. Looking back, should have done the elk stuff and had a chance at some large bulls. Still haven’t killed a bull or huge buck, plenty of cows and deer though. One day…hopefully
-
My biggest.
-
Haven't got him scored yet still since he's still at the taxidermist but I believe this is my current biggest.

My prior biggest by a inch on net score from 2012. Net was 156" and my other was 155" from 2015 not pictured.

2023 archery deer. Went 123 5/8.

Because the group on this thread have obviously hunted a wide range of area and seen a lot of bucks throughout the state. I have a question that I've wondered about for years because of my own experiences. I've hunted deer, bear, birds throughout the northern portion of the state. I've spent a little time west of Yakima bow hunting deer and elk over the years. Never spent much time hunting the south east corner or the east central area south of Spokane. When it comes to Mule deer, east of the Pacific Crest trail, where does the Blacktail influence on the Mule deer run out? Or is this even the correct way to look at it? Per the regulations, anything east of the PC trail is a Mule deer. I killed a three point buck years ago, east of the Chiwawa river that looked like a deer you'd see on the islands or out on the peninsula except he field dressed 192 lbs. Just an absolute tank! I've seen deer that were taken from the Pasayten Wilderness that had 20+ inch wide racks but had ears that may have been 14/15 inches wide tip to tip, which made the rack look huge but still had the look of a Blacktail. Dark, short, stout body, short ears....etc..etc. I've been hunting for years now East of the Okanogan valley and every Mule deer I've seen and killed has been grayish, light brown, long body, big wide ears tip to tip. I'm colorblind but can still see that the deer in that region are considerably lighter in shade than what you would see above lake Wenatchee or up near the end of lake Chelan. Every buck we've killed has had ears 18/19+ tip to tip with a few of the bigger ones near 20 inches. My last buck was an older 4 point that looked to be regressing with 19ish wide ears, an ashy gray body and only 18 inch wide horns. I've read in the past that the consensus amongst biologist is, as far as DNA is concerned, Mule deer and Blacktail are the same basic animal and the noticeable differences are just environmental.
Just a thought. Any opinions?

I believe the Blacktail influence peters out once you cross the Columbia River.
It is very prevalent in Chelan County.
-
Some pretty awesome bucks on this thread... I have a couple decent muleys... but I like to think my best buck hasn't been tagged yet... :chuckle:
-
Quite a bit of it in the Yakima, especially west of 82. There have been a few in the Methow my whole life, but few enough that many have never seen it. Not sure where they phase out down in the south, maybe tri cities
-

Me too, lol. I’ve filmed bigger than I have shot and I have seen bigger than I have filmed, and I have imagined or dreamed of bigger than I have seen.
-
Blacktail influence from what I have seen is heavier in the southern cascades and does decrease the further north you go, Yakima county seems to have the heaviest, but I've seen it in Kittitas and Chelan counties but in those two counties I see many more pure mule deer than in Yakima county.
-
Probably a dumb question, but do whitetail and mule deer ever cross breed? I’m familiar with the mule deer/blacktail but don’t hear anything with whitetail/muledeer.
-

I could be wrong but have always been told a whitetail buck will breed a mule deer doe but a whitetail doe won't let a mule deer buck breed her.... I'm sure others know more than me...

Your buck that was stolen…was it a deal where you both shot it and they took it? Or did they flat out take it from you after your killed and claimed it?

Shot it and dropped it in it's tracks. Had to make it down a canyon that was extremly verticle, mostly shale rock, and across a deep creek. When I made it up to the buck there was a man sitting on my buck with his brother standing by smoking. They had already tagged my deer. I told them I had shot that buck from across the canyon. The older brother said, "Your not taking this buck...my tag is already on it." It was right before dark, didn't want to argue or get in a fist fight over a deer. Their excuse was, "We thought someone lost it." Due to the fact he already tagged it, it becomes his "legal" property. I could have called the Game Department and Sheriff. However, I didn't want to deal with all of the hastle. I personally would never do that to anyone. It was an absolutely terrible and dejecting feeling. I hope none of you ever have to experience that.
-
That sucks!

Hope you at least got a picture of your buck before they took it

Man that sucks bad. I’ve read lots of stories like this, more so with elk than deer but none the less. Every time I read one I think “I hope every time that thief looks at that buck on the wall he’s reminded of what a spineless loser he is and the fact that he’ll never really be a hunter.”

No animal is worth escalating into what could be a confrontation with someone that almost certainly has a deadly weapon. Taking the higher ground and walking away was the smart move. :twocents:

My wife was hunting with her dad when she was a teenager, he shot a nice 4 point blacktail in wilkeson. two or three guys came up to them and said that's our deer while he was gutting it out. The situation left him with no choice but to walk away, he's was a big man. Happens that his brother was a game warden at the time, he gave him a call and from the license plate off the d bags truck, he had his deer back within the day. He has since passed and we have the antlers now, love how that story ended out. As far as some saying it's not worth it, well, somethings are just not worth letting go, I would turn into a predator if some azz hat did that to me.

Since we got to talking about big WA 2 point muleys... My biggest WA muley was actually a 2x3. When I say "biggest", I mean age and body weight, obviously not antler score. Somewhere I have a picture of the carcass hanging in the cooler. He looked like a spike elk... :chuckle:
-
Love seeing all the great deer from Washington State. Ill throw a couple more in here. Ill start with my dads big 2 point too go with all the other cool 2 points already posted.
-
My brothers biggest buck

My dads biggest 4 point and my 2nd biggest buck together from 2012

I didn't get very good field pics since I was by myself, but here's a front view from the cooler

My two best WA bucks. Both Archery, 2013 & 2015. I don't plan on ever topping them...or even coming close.

Scores on those? Awesome bucks!
Bottom one was 162" and change. Top was 164" and change. Neither of them had huge frames and people are always surprised they didn't score more. I feel like they're a good example of when the score doesn't represent the caliber of the animal.
-
Very nice bucks! Same area?

Very nice bucks! Same area?
25 miles and two state highways between them. I don't think they share any genetics. The only thing they have in common is drop tines. The one on top is remarkably symmetrical and only had 2 inches of deductions. The one on bottom had almost no symmetyr and 40+ inches of deductions. (Scores I posted were gross, not net)
