Below I5 one take down. In line with the Mexican hat. Marked a couple fish, most of the day the birds were blank. Gonna wait another week or so. Still a little early I guss. Gl to all that chase😉🥃🇺🇸
-
Nice! A takedown this early is a victory in its self! What were the water conditions like? How bout the furbag situation? Are they as thick as last year? I will be fishing April 4th and 5th for sure, maybe a day before then as well. Good luck out there!
-
Water was a little dirty, quite a bit of debris on top. Seals were there not in big groups couple dz maybe in my troll area.
BTW That take down today was on my new Edge rod. Pro 360 902 10-20 Sure wish it would’ve stuck.
-
I’ll be giving it a go tomorrow!
-
Good luck!!!
-
Couple dozen seals where you were trolling? Is it common to see larger groups?
-
Saw this on FB earlier and also read an article stating that NOAA with remove 50 sealions from the Portland area in April. The article also stated that the sealions eat as much as half of the spring Chinook run. I don't know how a fish could even make it in to the Cowlitz through that gauntlet!

Saw one caught, I had one missed bite on herring. Was in the channel. The Columbia was full of seals. Saw them get at least a couple in my short time out there. Those fish have zero chance with that many every where.
-
Hopefully the tribes will take some of them out. Thats our only hope. The game department is a joke
-
I don’t fish the lower river so I didn’t realize there were this many around. I’m afraid the salmon numbers will soon look like the steelhead if something isn’t done.
-
Man has created unnatural flows, water temp, and barriers which changes fish behavior and allows it to be a win for the furbags.
Then man doesn't manage the furbags correctly.
Follow the money!!!!

Along with installing ready made habitat for them with docks, piers and buoys to rest on.

They figure the sea lions kills around 40-50% of the springer run.
-
Here is one that made it thru the pack of sea lions only to fall victim to a whole herring behind triangle. Tight lines everyone
-
Nice fish. Congratulations!
-
Only 31 Springers counted at Bonneville so far.
-
The feds better speed up the program or you just might see more sea lions floating their way back to astoria! Wouldn’t be the first time either…

Just to clarify, we are talking about the "native and protected" California sea lions, correct?
-
Hush hush but some of those are going bye bye very soon! Hopefully! When they started removing some lions from the Willy there was almost an instant rebound in certain stocks of fish… coincidence?
-
What a joke and a "feel good" story for all of us where we line back up and buy licenses again for the 2024 season. It's no coincidence that they are doing this right around the start of a new license year. This government will blame everyone and everything except their incompetence.
They could charge for a drawing and then charge the successful applicants that drew $250 per tag and have no problem selling enough tags to kill every last one of the *censored*ers, while generating money to put back into fish and wildlife. Like I said, just another display of government incompetence at its finest. :twocents:
-
People still buy licenses?

When you fish as much as I do it’s not a choice. I get checked at least 6 times a year. There’s too many sea lions and they kill way too many fish but… there’s still tons that make it and they are delicious and they bite so good. Can’t wait for later in April for my season to start.
-
There are definitely fish to be caught. I just got a really good report from a friend.
-
Hopefully this rain will getem moving in. Hitting it hard starting Monday

When is it supposed to close?

When is it supposed to close?

As of now, April 5 is the last day.

What section is that for?

What section is that for?
Lower river.

Thanks, Guess I better get out and get the boat back together so I can fish Saturday and Monday!
-
Only 31 Springers counted at Bonneville so far.
It’s to early for those numbers to mean anything but there’s more that have came over this year then last year so far. A little hope for a stronger than forecasted run at least.
-
I broke the new boat in on a 10lber last Sunday out of willow grove. Saw 3 others caught.
-
Any weekend reports? Sounded like hit or miss from the few reports I saw elsewhere.
-
Fished a ways below Willow Grove Saturday and yesterday. Saturday was pretty busy, but only saw 1 fish caught. We were only out about 3 hours. Yesterday wasn't quite as busy. Sat on the hook from just before 10 until after 5. By 3 or so most boats cleared out. 2 or 3 of us left. At 430 the boat directly below us got 1. Then got 2 more by 510.
-
Was out yesterday below i5. Mark, the few fish but no bites whatsoever. Talk to a few people they said the same thing marked a few but no nets flying.

When you say below I5 do you mean between the bridges or down at Davis Bar?
Hit or miss, rain or shine I'll be at Portco Thursday and depending how things go maybe Kalama Friday.
Good luck out there!
-
The GPS show out of Portland had some guide on there Sunday which caught some of them with herring. I'd follow that boat with some herrings very close to bottom..........
-
Mfowl
Below Davis👍

Had a long but decent day on the water at I5 today. Did not rain too bad but was chilly with the breeze. Anchored up from 8-1 with no bites, trolled from 1-5:30 and managed to scratch one out at the bottom of the airport troll. Not many boats working the area throughout the day. Saw 3 others caught, no fish checker at the ramp.
-
Nice 👍
Extention through 9th
-
Just a heads up guys and gals They extended that Season through the ninth. So you can fish all the way through Tuesday.
-
We fished out of Kalama this AM, ended up going 1 for 3 on the troll. The fish we landed had too many fins though. There was quite a bit more boats working the area, especially Prescott down to Rainier but we only saw 2 other fish landed on the day. Fish checker had 5 fish for 12 boats when we pulled out at about 2pm. Good luck out there through the weekend! I have to go back to work. :(
-
Me and my son fished yesterday and today below willow grove. Got one and lost one Thurs and not a bite today. Trolling. Back at it Sunday.
-
Gettin after it Monday & Tuesday. 🙏🙏🙏😉🥃🇺🇸
-
Pretty slow today. I got the only fish I saw today in the Longview area on a plug.
-
Good luck out there! Have fun!
-
Made it out below I-5 today. a few boats, everybody played nice in the pool. I personally and my buddy didn’t see any nets. He saw a couple seals. Guess we’re part of that group Ain’t got **** club😉🥃🇺🇸 Not gonna go out tomorrow. Just not enough incentive to go. Merwin on the other hand. Things that make go 🤔🤔🤔. Good luck to that hit the last day👍
-
Columbia River is extended till the 11th given y’all two more days. Good luck
-
You guys keep giving them heck! Springers were a serious addiction for me over a couple decades ago...I'd start fishing them the middle of March, (within sight of the Astoria bridge) and follow them up to Bonneville..then on to the Wenatchee/Icicle..and rinse/repeat for Summers, then Falls. During March in the "low" River, when/if I found concentrations of smelt back then, the springers fishing could be off-da-hook! I'm just not mad at them anymore, nor as tuff I guess? Back then I remember some trips where we'd drive out to the beaches and razor clam at night, then springer fish all day out of Skamokawa. Top it off with a 6-7hr drive home, those were the days! Maybe once I retire, I'll chase them again...
-
👍😉🥃🇺🇸

Found a couple on the willamette yesterday. Hopefully we see a Columbia mid may re opener.

Right on!
-
Thinking we will see a Columbia re opener in late may. If not my springer season is done. Made 9 trips on the Columbia and willamette. Brought home 13 springers. Got skunked twice and released 3 wild fish.
-
You did well👍 I got skunked. as for an early opener. Don’t hold your breath :dunno:
-
Looks like DFW tossed us a bone. Anybody have recent eyes on river conditions?
-
Fished near Home Valley Wednesday. Amazing morning weather wise, but very slow bite. Afternoon was windy and rough, but fish being caught.
-
Fished 2-6 tonight. Got a nice one about 3pm and lost another right after it. Then the wind made it almost un fishable.
-
Look's like a couple more 3 day openings coming up.
-
Made it out today blanked :dunno:
-
I was planning to go out Thursday/Friday this week but opted to go for shrimp/halibut instead. Fathers Day weekend is my favorite time to sit on the hook and fish plugs. With the short summer season I will miss it this year. :'(
Good luck out there!
-
Fishing buddy of mine has been at Cathlamet for the last couple weeks on the good tides. They got a 17lb Springer the other day and sent me two photos of a couple nice ones in each yesterday, looked to be mid teens. I'm going down tomorrow til Friday.

Probably summers not springers.
