Title: Trapping Interest
Post by: mjustice79 on March 26, 2024, 03:40:34 PM
Hello. As I watch the continual decay of American society, I have determined that learning how to trap probably wouldn't be such a bad idea. I reached out to WDFW and they said that the next in person class would be at the rendezvous in August. I may try and make it, but if I can't, would it be worth it to just take the online class, get my license, and then find a mentor to take me out? The only trapping experience I have is watching my great-grandad running trap lines and listening to his stories growing up in Tennessee, which was quite a while ago now. Thanks for the advice.

I would join the WA State Trappers Association. Then I would join the WA State Trappers Association tab on this site.

It's really rough to start trapping out of nowhere, I'm still in the middle of it. Unfortunately the season ends in about 5 days, but that should leave you a lot of time to get ready for next season.

Join the WSTA, search YouTube, and this forum of course, I'm happy to share my vast months of experience with you if you DM me.
Good luck.

If you can't make the Summer Rendezvous, I would suggest joining the WSTA and then attend our trappers workshop. We started this a couple years ago. I think it is actually better than the Summer Rendezvous if you are interested in learning how to trap. It is held in early December in the Olympia area. Ideally, I would attend both but if you take the test on-line and you attend the workshop you will be off to a good start. A mentor is great too but often hard to line up.

Where are you out of?
Making the Rendezvous would be good for connections and to learn some things, but a good second is your plan, especially to have a mentor, which is crucial. Many folks who grew up trapping forget the importance of this if they didn't have a father, uncle, grandad help them.  There used to be a time when even Game Wardens were a good POC.  Plus learning to trap will really get you immersed in true conservation.
