Title: 2024 Turkeys - Share Your Toms & Jakes Photos
Post by: tgomez on April 15, 2024, 04:59:44 PM
57 yard shot!
* Remington Premier Magnum Turkey 3" #5
*Carlson's Longbeard XR .660 Choke
*Mossberg 500 Turkey 12 gauge

I hunted for 53 minutes, not a call made. I stocked up on him, another Tom, and 3 hens. I was sneaking into my strut line location. This is my 23rd Tom/Jake of my life. 5 1/2" beard. Rio Grande out of Lincoln County, WA. Glory to the good lord above!  :hunter:🦃

I didn't make it out to hunt until noon. Missed the morning hunt because I had to cash my paycheck and give the wife some bill $. I heard 2 gobbles after I shot my bird about 1.5 hours before dark. I called in a hen that walked about 3 yards from my father. Pretty quiet evening for the most part. Very windy this evening with up to 40 MPH gust.

Took the kid , 20 minutes after school ,first tag was done.
Shortest turkey season for him ever.
Goodluck you all.
I'll probably buy his second tag this week, and take him next weekend.

80 year old brother drove up from Utah for his 26th year of turkey hunting up here. Hunted hard yesterday and got this old boy late afternoon. I got one one right off in the morning, but he held off for a bigger one

That's just outstanding. Gives me encouragement as I glide into my elderly years ;)

Nice bird! All turkeys or other Game is sustenance for our souls and family. Congratulations!!
I arrived in Davenport 13 miles north, at the Reinbold lease about 5:30 pm on Saturday the 13th . As I was making camp? 2 Toms were dancing below camp. This became 6 Toms, buy 6:15.  The sky was beautiful, no rain, few clouds, just enough to be amazing. I could smell the spring flowers and the pine trees pollen. That evening I counted 14 gobbling up and down the canyon.
On Sunday morning I awoke to the most beautiful spring sunrise . I step out of the trailer and see 6 Tom’s and a few hens. The next few hours was quite a show ! Toms strutting where they never are. A Tom strutted within 15 yards of my parked quad. I saw him and five others spread out across the spring wheat field.
Overall Toms strutted up and down the canyon. Very few hens were observed. A few weeks ago hundreds were still down at the river.

Boy oh boy was opening day different ! High winds , was the main problem. Atleast no rain! But it was 25 degrees colder or more.
I called between wind gusts and big rigs on hwy 25 . I heard nothing. I was on a different property we have across the highway. We usually take a monster limb hanger every year off that pistol shaped property. There is a huge section of land to the NE that never gets hunted. We abutt a small property that others can hunt. So we try to eat our way in, so to speak. Hunting the outside and leaving the jelly inside for last!
I always while setting up always make a few Improvements to the blind . Open air ground blinds is how I prefer to hunt turkeys. just enough cover to any movement calling . I like the extra challenge.
First a Jake came in. He was standing tall. Afraid to puff up. Trying to look at everything. I had 2 Dave smith decoys out. A sentry hen and a feeding hen. Boy was that Jake nervous.
About 2 minutes later a 2 year old Tom came in. He acted like he was trying to steal the babies.  I almost killed this bird. His beard was kind of jutted out, skinny. I decided to pass. Let him grow up for another year. As I was watching him? Another bird gobbled. One of very few I heard on opening day. I called to that bird. He answered. Oddly the 2 year old ran away. He didn’t see anything, because of a dense tree. I caught him on camera running. Not my mistake.
After a half hour , or 45 minutes? I picked up the call . Yawp yawp yawp yawp ! He cut me off !!! 15 yards away and slightly behind me . Mac Daddy!
I never saw him. Maybe he saw a little movement??
An hour later I called another bird in . He was periscope up , pure red head , looking scared to dare.  I saw all of 6 inches of his head above the curve of the earth. He looked things over and promptly left. I wasn’t going to shoot a Jake or young Tom. I need a beard to look at. It has cost me a few serious paint brushes and hawser ropes.

Opening day ? They won. Live to hunt another day and cause no harm if you can.

I kill just about everything that walks or crawls for a living. I don’t need death for the hunt. I like all of the enjoyment of everything in my opening day adventure.
I want to just kill I can go out to the coop and start slaughter. Or go to one of my pest accounts and continue killing into my sleep.

Turkey hunting is about spring sunshine, birds gobbling, blue birds on a fence . Sometimes staying up late at night eating appetizers and drinking good bourbon with the farmer while talking habitats!!!
We have land that others can join.
Thanks, Scott

Glad you had fun Scott. I agree the harvest is just iceing on the cake. It's about spending time with family and friends while enjoying the great outdoors. A bad day of turkey hunting beats the best day of work, especially when your in law enforcement. 🤣 I enjoyed your write-up about your hunt. Thank you and best of luck good sir. God bless!

This year was a little different. I did the youth hunt with a few boys no success for the day we made it out. They had a blast as I had set the ground blind in the middle of a roosting area. Birds were going nuts.

Fast forward to a few weeks later. I called in 11 Tom’s on day one with a buddy. The first group of four he rolled one and it got up and got out of dodge. An hour later we had another group come in. I shot a Jake that walked in from behind me and I could have reached out and grabbed it instead of shooting. I basically barrel tapped it. Some light calling after that and a big group of 6 mature Tom’s came in fully committed. At about 10 yards he took a shot and bagged his first gobbler!

Appa, which was one of Rainshadow1’s puppies sure loves the feathers.

This is the first bird of my own. I have been chasing these critters for a long, long time. So long in fact, most people thought I was lying when I told them I was going "turkey" hunting. As I approached the downed bird, I dropped to my knees and broke down and praised the Lord. This experience I will never forget.

Congratulations to everyone who has harvested a bird, and good luck to all still trying to fill their other tags the next month. I was out the other day with my father. Had 4 toms come into 100 yards, but wouldn't commit off of the private and across the fence to my set-up on state land.

Bird #2 of the season, same weekend, same property, but a mile apart and very different tactics. Had 2 separate coyotes bust opportunities earlier in the day on other toms right out of the roost. Many bachelor groups roaming in the late morning as the sun came out each day (9 jakes in one, 9 toms in another). Had a lot of fun talking with groups near the spreads throughout the day and sealed the deal on this tom in high brush at about 20 yd (no decoys out, just hen clucks)

Congrats all it's been a tough season for sure.
No luck on my son's second bird, just a gobble is a trophy sometimes.
Good luck to all still looking.

Got my tom last weekend and it happened to be a quad beard! Anyone else run into something like this? How uncommon is this?

This was my first turkey, I called him, another tom and 3 hens into a single Jake and hen decoy set up with a box call, and then I hit him with my wad at 10 yards with a full choke :chuckle: I then came home after school and hunted him again and put a spot and stalk and dumped him at 40 yards with my trap shooting shotgun. He had a 10.5 inch beard and  1 1/4 inch spurs.
