A couple weeks ago while scouting I came across another bear bed but I did not have my camera with me. Today I was in the area and found it again. It has not been used since I found it but I took some pictures anyways.
I only noticed it because I nearly stepped in the many piles of scat. There were at least seven piles of scat, some on top of others. While taking a closer look I noticed the flat depression a couple feet away.
While looking over the various piles of scat I could tell that some were full of hair and others were just grass. I noticed what looked to be a bone. Upon closer inspection it became apparent that it was a portion of a fawn skull. I then took a stick and poked around a bit and found a fawn hoof.

Here is a bed that I found about 3 weeks ago.
This bed is next to and under a large tree.

You can see the claw marks on this root that is at the top of the bed.

I took this pic a few feet away from the bed.

Yes. Both of them were in the CF. I found another one early in the season, but I don't think I took any pics of it.

cool find Billy...wonder if deer gives him the *censored*s :chuckle:

Go there many times every year. Firewood cutting, Hunting, Fishing, Camping, and Riding, but have never come across any thing like that.
I think that is an awsome find. :hello:
-
Very interesting thanks for the pics. Too bad we cant save any fawns until August. :dunno:

Cool find Billy. That is a whole lotta do-do.Mark

unique find billy. ;) thanks for posting it up.

That bear has pretty good spacing on his dung piles. Must be right-brained :chuckle:

Found two just like that up in the Toutle unit while horn hunting yesterday. Always makes me think....those little hooves, pieces of skull and jaw bones (saw some of those yesterday too), have to HURT!
-
Cool thread BTKR. Many times in the spring I too find beds that are littered with scat. I've never found pieces of fawns in them though. Here are some that I happened to take pictures of this year.

Haha, I'm glad to see I'm not alone in taking pictures of poo. I have a bunch of them! My buddy that is not a hunter went with me once, and was laughing very hard at my interest in poo.
I too have found the meadow beds with an outhouse in the trees.

Here is one from Lewis gmu...

I found one once that was about 10 feet into the trees on the edge of a meadow, there were probably about 30 piles of bear scat in it. We missed the bear the next day... :bash:

Both the beds I showed are within 20 yards of an opening or cut. The one with the fawn parts is on the edge of a spot where I always see 5 or 6 does. Makes me wonder if the bear bedded there on purpose. :dunno:

Good pics and thread!!! Thanks for posting them.

Very cool, I've only ever seen something like that once.
We were surveying in the Wishkah area and were down in a brushy hell hole. There was an ancient cedar that had fallen over but hung up on another tree. Towards the base, where there was about 5 ft. of clearance there was all kinds a bear crap, looked just like the pictures you guys have already posted. Thought it was awfully wierd, and it really never dawned on me that it would be a bedding area. I never really think about bears like I do deer and elk.

Found a few more yesterday. Here is the best one.
-
Dang!! That bear must have some trouble passing the handgun! :sas:
-
I have found spots like that, where the have several piles of droppings all in the same spot. Never a fawn hoof though
Found some today with aluminum foil in it.

Great pics and excellent thread. Love this type of stuff. The couple beds I have seen over the years have been at the base of trees.
Once I was still hunting down a game trail for deer and as I slipped down the trail I passed by a large old growth fir. There was a bear bedded at the base on the other side and as I passed the tree I was looking up the hill. The bear popped up out of his bed about 4ft from me and ran. I was so startled, the bear covered about 10yds before I gained enough composure to throw up on him. About then he was diving in a hemlock thicket and I only saw flashes of him in the timber out running me up the hill.

i walked around where my trl cams and apples are and found whole apples crapped out, or at least thats what it looked like. i have over 500 pics of bears, and i have counted at least 5 different bears on my cams. just wonder if you guys have ever seen any whole apples crapped out. i thought it was odd, and wonder if maybe he packed it there in his mouth and dropped it there squeezing one out.

I bet it was carried there and left. Possibly a smaller bear took them away from the bait and a bigger bear crapped on them?
Take some pics next time.

Great stuff !!!! That fawn hoof is totally crazy !!!! thanks for posting the pooh..

This is a better than average thread from you billy :P
nice
Ridgeratt...you suck ;) I was soo wondering why everyone was impressed with a deer hoof in scat when iceman found a bear that shat a SS 357 mag...lol
Nice post! Soo Billy, make any sense to hunt right over top these? maybe climb a tree overlooking it 80 yards off? They spending time mid-day there or some other time??
-
LTL - "Better than average" :dunno: Not sure how to take that? :chuckle:
I don't think it would be advantageous to hunt over those beds. They were made near early food sources that are no longer being used. Plus they are in the thick stuff where you wouldn't get in or out without causing quite a disturbance.
If you found a fresh bed in the semi open you might be able to sit over it and have success. I hear tell of a guy who killed a bear in its bed last year. :chuckle:
I found another bed that I am pretty sure was made by a bear in some real nasty brush with bear sign all over, but I did not find any hair or crap nearby so I am not positive. It was recent but you would not be able get near it with out disturbing the whole area. Maybe a stand over a trail leading to it, but it would probably need to be a rifle shot.

Perhaps the photo of the passed pistol was /or should be linked this thread!! :chuckle:
Going to go soak some trail cams this weekend perhaps I can find a pistol also!!
