I was lucky enough to be drawn for moose in the 49 degrees north unit. Was wondering if anyone had any info on where to start looking for them. I,ve hunted turkey in that unit alot but have never seen moose so any info would help.
-
Pretty much the entire unit holds moose. You just need to pick whether you want to shoot one close to a road or not or what your style of hunt is.
-
I really hate road hunting so I will be getting out of the truck alot
-
Get yourself a good current map and look for road closures. There are quite a few. Not as many as the Selkirk. You have tons of public land. You'll have a good hunt. On your scouting trips, pay more attention to terrain, logging, feed etc, and not worry about seeing moose. They are very nocturnal in teh summer. Look for moist areas.
-
No hot spots, get in the mountains, glass cuts and learn to call.
-
I will do that. If you were drawn in 49 degrees would you have any certain roads you would start your search on?
-
Spend some time looking between Fourth of July Mountain/Little Calispell Peak and Calispell Peak.
-
Your in for a quality hunt. I know of a bull I called in last year that was too small to shoot. I don't know how much they grow each year, but I bet he's still there. He had 4 cows and a little dejected bull with him. EZ to find, and nice camping area too.
-
There is a little info in here ;)

Gletty Creek, just north of the Flowery Trail Road, has a BUNCH of moose and some really nice bulls.
-
Bone got pics of a nice one there last year

What size engine?
-
Peddle power Moss, peddle power!!!
-
how about a quad, are they legal over there or is a bike the only way to go besides hoofin it.
-
Peddle power 180, peddle power!!! :chuckle:
-
Got a mountain bike to I will start training.
-
Then rig your mountain bike up so you can hook a cart up to it to haul the animal out if you get one.
-
Sounds like a good idea.
-
Or call me and I'll bring the mules up and pack it out for you. :hello:
Gletty has some huge bulls in there.
-
Sounds like a good idea.
Hey 180, look at the pictures of the game cart on my moose thread. I took my moose out in two trips plus the head. 482 lbs of meat. I was only a mile behind a gate is the reason I took two trips. 150 to 180 is very manageable. The game cart balances out very well.
-
where did you get your cart PA BEN?
-
Good luck up there 180.
-
Thanks pathfinder.
-
Too Funny Fred, I was going to recommend Gletty and over into the Winchester. Its been a while, but I jumped two bulls together in there in November... one was a 160+ bull...the other a 140ish... Beautiful moose country for SURE!

Goddard Peak, Winchester Creek, Nine Bark Road, Power Peak, clearcuts at daylight and at dark that contain willow and ceonothus. You won't have any problem finding a moose but you have to be out there at primetime since they often bed down during most of the warmest part of the day. Watch for willows with the tops broken and hanging down and you'll know you are in moose country. Why, I even had a cow moose in my back yard 2 weeks ago in Kettle Falls, that was a first. They are just about everywhere here in the NE part of the state.
-
Anyone know how the antler growth is right now. I want to start scouting but I want to be able to see what the bulls have to fully offer.
-
At this point you would just want to be more interested in what logging is going on, roads that are gated etc. You are a long ways out from October and where they will be.
-
Hard to see this time of year, there is a ton of food source everywhere, they dont have to be out in cuts to eat right now. alot of growth on the big bulls right now
-
plus they are about 90% nocturnal. Though the temps are moderate, Moose HATE heat.
-
except late in the year ;)
-
Right on I will wait awhile. probably start scouting in august or september.
-
I don't know about here but in AK we never saw very many Bulls till the first frost, then game on after that if the temp stay below freezing...
-
where did you get your cart PA BEN?
I got the cart from Cabela's, and made the goose neck for the bike myself.
-
which cart?
-
Thanks pa im going to check into that cart looked very handy and helpful on your hunt.
-
Man this is crap bought my tag two weeks ago and they did'nt send it to me yet! Anyone else having this problem?
-
just call them tomorrow 180, I wouldnt worry.
-
I just bought my sons (moose) a couple of days ago. Today the game dept called and said there was a missprint. They said they needed to call everyone and let them know that the fees will go up .50. So we had to void that check and write them another one. They also said they are a couple of weeks behind on getting the packets out to everyone but should see them soon. :dunno:
-
I got a letter sent to me about all units where the moose are, lol pretty generic, waste of effort imho pretty much moose are in the woods :chuckle:
-
I noticed in the regs it said moose tags were 109.50 but the game department charged me 110 so hopefully they charged me the right price. Sounds like I will have to break down and call them tommorrow.
-
It's .50 and you have a moose tag in your pocket. I wouldn't worry about it too much.
-
Yep Shane that is what they told me they were waiting for, pamphlets from the fish and wildlife showing where to find moose.
-
Went up scouting today off of highway 2. I did'nt see any moose but did see alot of tracks. I was pretty surprised I did not see any moose because it was a cool overcast day and all the other animals in the woods were moving sawabout a dozen deer, couple nice bucks. Also saw a bear and about 100 turkeys. The spot looks very promising for moose though so I think I will spend the first couple days of the season in that area.
-
Here's one :) You have to use your imagination how big!

Thats a cool picture wish I could have atleast caught a glimpse of something like that but I guess it will have to wait until the next trip.

Well here is the story. First morning we started a little late got to our first hunting area about 8 am. We got out of the truck and walked a trail that enden up overlooking a big overgrown clearcut. We immediately noticed fresh tracks on the trail in front of us and followed them until they went into the brush. About 5 minutes later we heard a bull grunt down the hill in the clearcut, so we went back to where we had parked and noticed a old gated road that looked like it went out into the clearcut we heard the grunting in. We ended up walking out the road and got about 500 yards in on it and a little bull went running down the road in front of us. We watched him bed down in the clearcut and continued to the end of the road. When we came back by the clearcut 30 minutes later we spotted another bull coming up from the bottom of the clearcut, he was quite a bit bigger than the first bull we saw and he walked right below us on a old drag road and straight toward where we heard the first bull that morning. He hadnt been out of our sight for more than 20 minutes when we heard a cow start moaning and that was followed by the craziest sound I had ever heard hunting, it sounded like there was a 3000 pound pissed off pnr bull on steroids screaming just in the woods. We went down towards the moose but we could not find them, found a chewed up bull pit and lots of rubs all over though. Later that day we seen acow and another small bull but nothing that said shooter. Day 2 we were driving up flowery trail road in the morning and my dad spotted a young really wide bull in one of the swamps off the road, we watched him for a few minutes and decided he was to small. We hit our road and didnt go a mile and seen a big cow out in a clearcut. After watching her for awhile we drove on to check out a lake we had seen fresh tracks at the day before and we got the same result fresh tracks and no moose. We started up the hill to where the road ys and my brother in law spotted my moose standing in a opening about 80 yards off the road when I saw him I new he wasnt wide but something said shooter in my head so when he trotted off I ran after him and took a fifty yard shot hitting him right behind the shoulder. I knew it was a good shot because right when the bullet hit him a huge cloud of steam blew out he opened his mouth and nosedived into the groud. He rolled over a couple times but by the time I got up to him he was done and had only went 15 yards from where I had eventually shot him. This was a awsome hunt some of the coolest stuff happened that I will never forget, even though my moose wasnt the biggest in the state it is a trophy in my book and there are no regrets.
-
Yep I know, yours looked a little heavier than mine but I got 537lbs of meat out of the deal.
-
Great story and congratulations on a great bull!!
