Does anyone own and use a small metal detector to find bird shot in waterfowl, upland birds or turkeys?
Do they work well and do they detect both lead and steel? How about shot size. Do they find shot down to #8? Are there any specifically for game birds or do you just use the small handheld models you see online?
Thanks!

Teeth! I only run bismuth now so it’s like popping a tums with dinner! :dunno: :chuckle:

I bought one years ago to use on ducks and geese I believe it was called a wizard. I think they also sell them for finding nails in wood.

I have actually been wondering about this. I usually make a batch of bird jerky and goose pastrami and while I do my best to get all shot out I always miss some. My teeth arent the best so I cant afford any more damage. I just ordered one!!

Which one did you order?

I have a Wizard. Works pretty well. I'm sure it has saved me $ in dental bills. I've never tried it for lead but don't believe it would work there.

I have had good luck with the Garrett Pinpointer. I have a 2'x3' piece of Teflon cutting board and I lay the breasts and legs out on it and just go over each piece. Never nice bitting into shot or running it through my grinder.

I have a 25lb magnet I use to find pellets. It works pretty well as long as I use steel.

simple...headshots only :chuckle:

This is what I use as well, not cheap but a cracked tooth is more expensive.

This is not a bad idea. Plenty of them on the market, Garrett, Minelab even Hobofrieght.

Thanks for the recommendations guys. Just pulled the trigger on the Garrett Pinpointer

Anyone ever tried a regular stud finder?
Just thinking out of the box. :dunno:

I also run Kent bismuth but sometimes it’s tough to find. Does anyone know how the copper plated bismuth is on the teeth?

Never worried about it. Seem to seldom find a pellet aftet cooking.

I've been using my Garrett pin pointer for a couple of years for searching for shot, but still, look, and feel. Found six pellets the other day, and only one today. I bought it to use with my metal detector, but searching for shot after grouse and pheasant hunting this time of year. Just to make sure.
-
I only find a couple a year after cooking, but those couple aren't good as I get a bit overconfident since it's so rare. The detectors are only $99 for some of them so it may be a cool thing to have, even for some big game meat around the shot area if the bullet comes apart.

Anybody try one of the cheaper amazon ones? I've been eyeballing this (https://www.amazon.com/SUNPOW-Rechargeable-Pinpointer-Waterproof-Detection/dp/B0D7PGK52C/ref=sr_1_7_sspa?crid=3O852I7JY8AMD&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.9oEwk28Y9Ysh3ysGXjSQTcaxa-z-5588U0y-rkxgS_UNhNaUGSZA3EOhXd8I08HQc6ud10EsHY1Jz8Q9i5rDHdNmHdJNjCFy5Se7J4yC6ckxOUUeL2kR-1ftYQBJR7RsnXPXiGCdyEve6PDpbjdXawIiM60hyFZsMbX8K-FQosER7FtT0rhQ68ijsEbc2eEA2AP8f1C5z0DZZTvTcZr0VymsINM2n5ZBFpb4nuTyO2s.QMKFEQbCAMnxFWZviZ42p1tsfdmJnnaCWvlGyE7Sfds&dib_tag=se&keywords=handheld%2Bmetal%2Bdetector%2Bwand&qid=1732681477&sprefix=handheld%2Bmetal%2Caps%2C177&sr=8-7-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9tdGY&th=1)one on sale.

I always breast fillet my birds and chase any hole I see looking for feathers and shot.
