Title: Oregon Wolf Poisonings
Post by: Shawn Ryan on May 17, 2024, 03:08:05 PM
19 wolves have been poisoned in Oregon since 2015. ODFW just released the news of the latest three killed. Warnings, rewards, and details of other wildlife killed are included. I've not heard that anyone has been arrested in any of the poisonings.

Any guesses on what they're using for poison?

DDT.....carbofuran.....rural Cali ranchers used to hang old tires on fences indicating that poison was in use.....then the connection with unviable eagle and hawk eggs was made and they were banned. Target one animal and you also get a hit on the food chain.

Be careful what you wish for they are still looking for the people who did this.

DDT doesn't kill animals!  :chuckle: I have a can of it in my shed. I met an old man who said it's great for getting rid of lice and they used to put it in the kids hair! It has detrimental effects on amphibians and insects. It was found to cause eggs to become unviable as well. It doesn't kill any mammals that I ever heard of. The stuff I have is for treating cattle. The can is empty now.

I would rather people just shot them and left them laying. Not the torture and agony poisoning causes.

But which side of the border did it happen? It does matter, doesn't it? Can't they still be offed on the other side?

The LD50 for DDT is about 1,000 mg/ kg. So it certainly can kill an animal. I would not say that it is super acutely toxic to mammals but it is poinsonous by most standards. It's similar in acute toxicity to advil.

It has chronic effects and is very slow to break down in the environment. It bioaccumulates in fat. It has been shown to have reproductive effects. So just because it does not kill efficiently and quickly does not mean that it is not a threat to human health or mammal health or the health of any species.

I have a hard time seeing why anyone would use it to kill a mammal though. There are a whole lot of more effective ways to poison a mammal that is for sure.

Right! Thats basically what I meant.  You would have to force feed it to the wolf to kill it! There's a can of cyanide in the shed at an old farm by my brothers. That would do it alot quicker!

This is the most likely scenario to me...
After banning M-44 use in Oregon there are probably some sitting around and somebody bought some and put them to use somewhere.  But like the report states. You could possibly kill unintended targets with them. This is from the anti's website.

Having worked in the hazardous waste field, I can tell you that there are a lot of poisons including sodium or potasium cyanide that are out there. It is not all that difficult to get your hands on some really deadly poisons.

As hunters and outdoor enthusiasts I thought poaching and/or illegal killing of wildlife was something that we were collectively against. Silly me.

I'm against eating brussels sprouts for dinner, but I am against eating literal poop from a butt for dinner even more than that. Youll get a different reaction out of me depending on what it is you are trying to feed me.

I feel very different about wolves in WA or OR being illegally killed vs wolves in Wyoming or Alaska, mostly because there are significantly more mechanisms to legally kill wolves in some places than others which makes the number of understandable circumstances lower. And I mean understandable and not excusable. I actually really hate that they were poisoned. Poisoning is indiscriminate, the poacher could have harmed a large number of other beneficial predators and carrion animals because they had no direct control over the dispensing of the poison. Even if they had a reason to kill a single wolf, they could have taken out the whole pack, along with any vultures, badgers, eagles, cats, etc. that happened upon them.

That is not cool.

I dont think we could do any more damage to our group then poison any critter. Anti hunters dont see "wolf,"  they see hunters poisoning cute little fluffy creatures.

It's illegal to poison wildlife so I shouldn't be happening.
Just like no guns in "GUN FREE ZONES"
Put up a sign and I won't happen, simple as that.

Wolves don’t count, they rip the fetus out while mom is still alive.  They were killed in our region many years ago for a reason, before the wolves took over in most western states the elk thrived, not so much now.  Screw the wolf and any stupid laws that protect them. They will never be “an endangered species” as long as they keep pouring in from Canada.  Hope those so called “poachers” never get caught killing wolves.

Wolves have never been an endangered specie in North America . That term is only used in lower 48 for political reasons

Sometimes I think wolf proponents will do this type of thing to make hunters look bad, then act triggered about the killing.

Something has to be done to save what deer and elk the state of Washington has left.
We need a couple of ANIFTA and BLM wildlife groups to help us out.
They can burn cities down and never be delt with from law enforcement.

Sounds likely that they used xylitol artificial sweetner. Very easy to get and very poisonous to canines. Tell your friends.

So how much of the exlitol makes it lethal to canines?

Xylitol is so toxic to dogs that just 1 stick of gum may contain enough of the ingredient to poison a small dog.
