So my hunt opened this past Friday, Nov 1st. I had planned to pull up elk camp in the Colockum on Wednesday and head straight to Entiat to set up deer camp. We'd then scout on Thursday and start hunting Friday. The general season elk hunt in Colockum had been kinda tough for us. Rain on Saturday night/Sunday morning, followed by wind all day Sunday. Monday through Wednesday we had only seen a few elk here and there. The forecast called for snow on Wednesday afternoon, so we decided to stick around for one last morning hunt on Thursday. I'm glad we did. Finally got into a herd of around 40 with 1 spike in it. My daughter got her first elk. What a great way to close out elk season. After 2 trips for a total of 4 miles combined, we had her elk packed out. We were exhausted. So didn't head off the mountain until Friday morning. By then there was 8" of snow on the ground and getting down was a slow go.
We spent Friday dropping the elk off at the processor, refueling, grocery shopping and driving over to Entiat. By then it was getting late and we set up camp in the dark.
Over the course of Saturday, Sunday and Monday morning, we managed to see over 300 deer and 1 cougar. Yep, daughter kept a running tally. 30+ bucks, but most were young. We did manage to see 2 mature bucks over the 2 & 1/2 days of hunting. They both got my heart pumping, but after 19 years of accruing points, I had my sights set on something next-level.
Most of the bucks seen were cruising around in search of does and oblivious of any danger. I could tell this hunt was going to be a great experience.
So we had to get home on Monday night in preparation for work and other responsibilites this week. The plan is to head back over Monday, after my daughter gets off work, for round 2 of my special permit. This time I'll have 5 days to hunt. From what you guys familiar with the rut in Entiat have told me, things should just continue to improve with respect to buck numbers. Can't thank all you members enough, who have offered up assistance and advice.
Sorry the pictures are so poor quality. My phone camera sucks.

I passed up a 28” 3 pt on day 2 and regretted it. Hunted hard and never saw bigger than 170” four point which I almost got. Funny thing was I needed to check rifle after a fall so setup on edge of road on bipod and was just getting ready to squeeze off on rock 700 yards down in the clearcut when the biggest buck I’d seen stepped into the scope view. Billion to one odds I was too startled to shoot in that fraction of a second - had it paused a 1/4 second I would have had a miracle story.
-
Good luck out there! Enjoy your hunt!
-
Best of luck heck of a wait make it worth it
-
Tagging along to see how this turns out. Best of luck!
-
Good luck! Hope you find one you like!
-
Good luck.
Think I talked with you, we were in a SxS. Did you see a 2x4? I got fairly good pics of it.
-
Good luck, seeing lots of buck activity here right now.

Let’s see them.
-
Yep,
I saw the 2x4. One of the 2 mature bucks we saw. We saw him two different days in that same area with 7-8 does. Daughter thought I should shoot it, until we saw our second mature buck on the trip the next day, which was bigger. Then she wanted me to shoot that one. Its horns were tall and at least 2" wider than the ears, but I couldn't get past the crab claw on the front right side. Can't wait to get back over there.

Sounds rough :chuckle: couldn’t happen to a better guy! Go find your buck!
-
Neither of these 2 would be shooters for me, but kinda odd/cool to be a 2x4.
-
1 more of the 2x4, and a "lucky" rabbit foot in a small tree. Unlucky for the bunny though :chuckle:
-
Looking forward to what you can come up with... Good Luck!
-
Yep to small
-
Had the tag in 2016 and saw a big wide slick two by two, don't think there was so much as a bump anywhere else on either antler. Actually thought about shooting it because it was so wide, and the fact nobody else could shoot it with an OTC tag. Let him walk and shot a four point later in the day. Best of luck and have fun this tag is a hoot to have!

Just came back from our second trip to Entiat. This time for 4 days. Fog has been a challenge. Impossible to glass from up above. Seeing plenty of buck, but mostly younger ones. heading back for the last 4 days of the permit on Sunday. Hopefully some cold weather and snow up high will push some more mature bucks down.
-
Great pics! Good luck out there! Hope your masher shows!
-
That second buck ,with the cork screw point.
He is pretty cool.
Good luck on the hunt.

So we headed back over there early Sunday morning for the 3rd and final trip during this 20 day permit season. My last opportunity to fill the tag I'd been waiting 19+ years to draw. I had 4 days to get it done. Amazing how much pressure I put on myself to get a nice buck after waiting so long.
We started off Sunday glassing the same canyons we had been seeing good numbers of deer in on our first 2 trips over, unfortunately we weren't seeing much. Mostly does, fawns and really young bucks. I decided to head over to a couple other areas that we had been in earlier this month that showed promise, but didn't have as many deer. We weren't having to deal with fog for once, so being able to glass from the ridges was nice. We started seeing more deer and a few older class bucks.
-
Waiting……. You shoot this one?
-
You're passing some dandy bucks. That takes some serious discipline. I would have punched it on the one with the corkscrew tine.
-
Get'er done!
Good luck .👍

For sure!!

Corkscrew!!!
-
Couple really nice bucks pictured. Hope you put a hole in one.
-
Good to see your seeing a lot of bucks👍 It’s encouraging for the future. Good luck to you, looks like you’re also seeing some real good bucks. You’ll know when it’s the right one.
-
I believe it closed on the 20th so hopefully you have a success story to post? :dunno:
-
:yeah:
-
Yes closes the 20th, none of those bucks pictured are the quality needed for that tag so hopefully OP found a buck he’s really happy with or had a great hunt and saw lots of deer.

......for YOU. JS

Hoping to see the success update. My group of 4 drew the swakane late tag years ago. We passed solid bucks until the very last day when we were confident on shooting big bucks in the snow. Well it was completely fogged in and couldn’t see 10 ft. One buddy got a 2 pt on the way down off the road. Hope OP did better!!

Monday morning we headed right back to the same canyon we'd seen a good number of deer in on Sunday. Steve, a member here on Hunt WA (and really good guy), lives in Entiat and informed us a big storm was coming Tuesday night. With our previous experience of dealing with fog when it rains or snows, I really was hoping to find a solid buck before the storm rolled in as the season ended on Wednesday. We found two decent 4x4s on Monday morning and got to within 150 yards of the bigger one who was bedded down with a doe. I was ready to punch my tag, knowing we had put in the time, seen well-over 100 bucks over the course of the hunt and had a major storm coming our way. That's when my daughter reminded me that neither of these 2 bucks is what I had hoped for prior to the hunt. She said keep looking Dad, we're seeing bucks every day and we've got more time. We'll find a better one.
She was right, we were seeing bucks every day. I told her ok, I'll pass this guy up, but if we don't find anything else this afternoon, we're going to come back and see if we can find him tomorrow (Tuesday) morning.
We hunted the rest of the day Monday and easily saw 50+ deer that day. We saw numerous small bucks, but nothing I'd shoot with this tag. The deer were up and moving around pretty much all day. Who knows, maybe they could sense the storm coming Tuesday.
As darkness fell on Monday evening, I told my daughter I'm shooting the 1st mature buck we see tomorrow. I don't want to chance zero visibility and impassible roads when the storm hits Tuesday night/Wednesday.

to be continued…….. ?

This guy has been taught well by Plat :chuckle:

Sheesh. Might be him in disguise.

Man the anticipation is a killer …….

So Monday night was a tough one. Didn't sleep much at all, knowing the hunt was coming to a close on Wednesday and a big storm was coming in Tuesday evening.
We were up and on the road in the dark once again Tuesday morning, headed to our first glassing point. Fortunately the fog was minimal, so getting up high and glassing down in the canyon was going to work out. At first light, we could see a group of 4 does with a couple of fawns. Throughout the hunt, if we saw a group of does together, there was a good chance a buck was near. Sure enough, a mature 3x4 was about 50 yards away, following another doe. This buck had the tallest rack we had seen in 11 days of hunting, but I bet his horns weren't even 12 inches wide. They just went straight up. My daughter said you're not shooting that Dad and I agreed. Before the hunt started, I had set my goals on finding a mature buck with thick horns and hopefully at least as wide as his ears. On to the next glassing point we went.
We drove over to the next ravine that we had seen 2 decent 4x4 bucks in the past couple of days. It was time to dig one of those boys up and hang a tag on it. After glassing the entire ravine, we only found a group of 7 does and fawns. I had a feeling a buck was close by, but nothing visible at this time. We'd come back to this ravine a little later and glass it again. By now it's 9:30AM and the fog is starting to move in.
So now we're headed to our 3rd glassing spot for the morning. My daughter is out of the truck and has started glassing already as I'm slow to get my spotting scope, gun and everything else needed for the next glassing. Before I can even get everything together at the truck, she's excited and says "Dad, there's a good buck across the canyon". She thinks it's one of the biggest bucks we've seen so far. Sure enough, even though he's almost 400 yards across the canyon, it's easy to tell he's a solid mature buck without even using optics. My daugther grabs the spotting scope from me as I find a solid shooting position. I already know I'm going to try and shoot this buck and I haven't even put glass on it yet. Within seconds, she has the spotting scope up and located the buck. Sure enough, he's a solid 4 point with eyeguards and horns just beyond the ears.
He's moving down through the trees, following 2 does. In and out of view, but as long as we can see at least one of the does, we know he isn't far behind. As the 2 does get to a little opening, one goes left and stops and the other begins feeding of to the right. The buck comes out into the open and turns broadside. Boom! I put a good shot on him. he runs about 50 yards and lays down. I can see him clear as day, so I take a second shot. Once again, we can hear the bullet make impact. He jumps up and starts running again, but this time only goes about 25 yards when he runs straight smack into a tree and then piles up. He was dead before he hit the ground.
It's all high fives and hugs now. He's laying there in plain view, but now we've got to figure out how to get to him. That is some steep and deep country. After using my mapping system to the best of my abilities, we've got him marked and it's time to drive around the canyon to a road we can see above him. As we drive over, the fog continues to move it. By the time we get over there and park above where we think he's located, you can't see more than 100 yards. Well, after about an hour of searching, we finally found him. Of course he was lower down in the canyon than I had expected. That just makes the packout that much more fun, right??? When it was all said and done, I was only parked 4/10ths of a mile above him. The packout was straight up a steep face with snow and ice. That was brutal. An hour and 15 minutes of literraly crawling up the ravine. As you all know, nothing feels better than when you finally make it back to the rig.
We made the slow drive out of the canyon, chained up front and back. Those narrow, icy roads are no joke! A big THANK YOU to all of you who recommended 2 sets of chains.
By the time we got back to camp, it was dark. Amazing how you can harvest an animal in the morning, but not get everything done and back to camp until after dark. By now it was snowing as the storm had arrived.
We woke up Wednesday morning to a foot of new snow and fog. The storm had come and in full-force. Man was I glad we weren't having to try and hunt Wednesday.

That’s a dandy

The buck you guys are referring to as "corkscrew" was harvested by another hunter we met during the hunt just a couple days before the season ended. We saw that buck 2 different times in the same canyon. I don't think that hunter is a member on here, but was hoping to share 1 of the really good photos I had of that buck.
-
Congratulations on a wonderful hunt and great buck!

Beautiful buck and great way to hunt the tag!
