I also drew the tag i have a fair amount of knowledge for the unit been hunting there for a few years we have been fortunate to kill a couple of bulls that scored well. It’s very steep but awesome area congratulations on the tag pm me to talk about the unit

Oct 21- Nov 3 And I am semi-familiar with the unit. Hunted the blues a bunch back in my college days. Nice to go back and revisit those areas. I am aware that the area has changed quite a bit.

Cougar Creek fire 0% contained >3091 acres already burned. Biggest hope is that the firefighters and residents of the area are all safe and continue to be safe. Looks like the elk season may end up being greatly affected for those hunting GMU 172 this year.
-
Such a bummer for you tag holders... my sympathies
-
This sucks, wished they would have got it when it was small. There are a few houses up there, hope they can back burn before their houses go up!!
-
Hopefully you will be able to get a crack at it, the little rain earlier in the week didn’t seem to help much. Fingers crossed for you guys, but doesn’t look promising.
-
Looks like they have been able to hold the line at Menatchee creek. If they can stop it at Indian Tom on the north and cougar creek road on the east, that would be be a big win for the tag holders. Still good habitat being burnt, but lots left that will hold bulls.
-
Looks like a wind shift overnight is really fueling the fire. It’s jumped Menatchee and heading up Lake Ridge and almost up to Indian Tom. At this point it looks like most of the big drainage is going to burn. Now it’s hoping they can keep it from jumping into any other units.
-
Hope it doesn’t go more west, lots of houses.
-
Anyone have insight on the fire? I am one of the 3 archery bull tag holders. Totally bummed right now
I talked to WDFW and they basically said your SOL. Looks like it’s 23% contain as of yesterday so maybe some hope.

you're not SOL. You can turn a special permit back in for ANY REASON up to 2 weeks prior to the opening of your season for points restoration.
But also, I've seen elk right back into burned areas immediately after fire crews leaving. Like still smoldering roots. They will be licking on the burnt stumps. A few well timed rains and that burn scar will have new sprouts coming up in September.
Point being, don't lose hope guys.
-
The fire that burned just to the north of there two years ago left little pockets of green timber through the burned area. The elk had no pattern to them but we saw lots of elk. They seemed to be just jumping from one green patch to the next.
-
I was there for a quality deer tag a couple years back… where I seen elk ain’t burned yet. Your g2g.

My wife's family has a cabin up mill Rd from anatone. So far as I can tell there is still area to hunt that we have seen bulls in this year. Would totally be down to point out where I've seen them or even meet ya down there when they open the Mt Rd. Pm me and exchange info. 👍🏻👍🏻
-
There will be pockets to hunt, the big question is if the unit will be open. As of now the entire area is closed. And unless they get a handle on it, it may not open by archery season.
Forecast for tomorrow is calling for stronger winds out of the west tomorrow and Friday. If they can’t hold the line at the road from Indian Tom, it could burn all of the NF in the unit.

like Karl said, you’re no where near SOL. I had a tag in there the last time they had a big fire and could turn it in until two weeks prior to the hunt. And that was before you could do that with any tag without a special situation.
-
They are still confident that it will be contained August 1.

:yeah: Best elk hunting I have seen in 162 was the year of the last big fire in there. They are so much easier to see moving across a burnt hillside. ;)

Good update from yesterday. It looks like that is a back-burn that is up along the trail from Indian Tom.

Banking on that... I really don't want to turn in a quality bull tag. The other HuntWA members on here who I am talking to have been very positive and helpful. Great community we have here!

Think long and hard before you turn that tag in as they are hard to come by. I put in for this unit for years until I got to old and never got drawn.
-
I've been watching the fire closely and it is in the big Menatchee canyon but they are really keeping it back well. Today could be a different story. I see some serious smoke coming up down there. It will still be worth hunting if you ask me. I would never turn that tag back in if I had it right now. :twocents:

A small teaser to keep all tag holder’s positive a small 6 with split brow times and a rag horn on public ground

I am following the Cougar Creek Fire 2024 on the Facebook. Wow. whoever is putting that together deserves whatever production award they give out. The page has been informative and professional providing tons of unique content. Well done folks!
I want to leave a comment to ask how the elk are doing, but I think that is the last of their concerns right now.

Must be a money thing now a few hunters and the 4-0 clan would have had this out in a few days. simple rolling hills on the 4-0 wildlife WDFW property WTH.
