Hello all , I’m sure this has been brought up before . Was just watching a YouTube video from backfire about cartridge wars . Just curious what is your go to mule deer hunting round . Honestly I have only hunted blacktail with a muzzle loader and shotgun. Thanks Jason

Got a few but my faves are 300wsm and now love my 6.5PRC

oh I know , strictly entertainment.

25.06, 100gr Nosler

7mm Rem Mag/Nosler Partitions

280 Rem with 140 Nosler Partition and
6.5 Creedmoor with Hornady 143 ELD-X

Which ever one I feel like pulling from the safe that day, but I'm REALLY liking my 7mm PRC!

270 win for all game
-
270wsm for me.
-
6.5X55 old like me :chuckle:
-
257 Weatherby or 300 Weatherby
-
22LR
Seriously though, I shoot a 7mm stw for everything from coyotes to bears.
-
Probably my Browning A bolt in 270 Winchester. I have a 30/06 that I like too but it's at least a pound heavier, so for most mule deer hunting I'm going to go with the lighter rifle.
-
.300WM or .270WSM typically. Couldn’t pass on a browning LR for half off so this year might be a 6.5manbun
-
300 wsm
-
270 win for all game
:yeah:
-
Really like my 28 Nosler
-
Jack O Conner was right 270.

Any big game I kill with a rifle is with my 1967 Remington 7mm mag

6.5 PRC/147 ELD-M.

6.5 PRC/147 ELD-M.
:yeah: My elk gun too

.280 Rem was great when the ammo was still readily available. I started with a .270 Win. Ended up buying another one a couple years ago. Tikka with 140gr Fed Premium Trophy Bonded Tip. Light and lethal. Love that gun.

Guess I'll just keep using my boring old 30/06 with 180gr Partitions.
Works for everything I hunt.

Right🤣
Any legal center fire caliber for deer will do it. 😉

25-06 tipped with a 120gr. Speer Grand Slam
-
it’s my 7mm rem mag with 154gr superformance bullets sent from my Montana Rifle Co ASR. They can do some significant meat damage if you punch them through the shoulders especially at closer distances. But as long as we put them in the right place, which is easy to shoot overlapping holes with my gun, they have worked great out to 550 yards on a bear and regular 400+ yard Montana mule deer shot that are almost always DRT. I also have 300 WSM that makes it out when I’m looking for something lighter. 165 grain bonded bullets for that one works on anything in Washington. Well Ive shot deer, elk, bears, and a moose with it
-
6.5 CM with 143 ELD-X has been good medicine for deer sized game.
-
Whatever rifle is in my hands at the time.
Probably the same rifle I'll miss the shot with.
Same story for me, can't find a mule deer or I find him and buck fever it.

260 Remington, 130grn Barnes tsx

270 win for all game

6.5-300wby, best deer rifle I've come across.
-
6.5 PRC/147 ELD-M.
I’ve killed 8 deer with this combination, I used to just use the 28 nosler for everything. The 6.5 prc is prefect for deer at mid ranges
-
Semi open timber 25-06 120gr, open county 6.5PRC 140gr.
-
6.5-300 wby 7 rem mag 300 win mag.
-
.280 AI with 150gr Barnes TSX or 28 Nosler pushing 175 gr ELDX.
-
I’ve used a few calibers from 270, 7mm Rem Mag, 308, 30-06, 300 Win Mag and 338 Win Mag. Not a lick of difference. It was the characteristics of the rifle that meant more than the cartridge. I don’t care for ultralight rifles when shooting far, so my Kimber Montana 308 wasn’t my favorite. But, I also don’t want a big heavy dedicated LR rig because that’s not my game.
The other rifles were all 24-26” barreled sporters with fixed 6x, 2.5-8x, 3-9x,3.5-10x, and 4.5-14x scopes. I don’t use scopes above 10x for big game hunting anymore. Mostly for eye relief issues shooting up or downhill.
-
My favorite caliber and rifle for deer and antelope hunting has been my .257 Wtby, it has even been used on bear, moose, and elk numerous times, but I now have a 6.5x300 that may take it's place, not sure yet.
-
Recently, .243win is what I've been carrying. 7mm-08, .270win and 30-06 have all been good to me. I couldn't pick a favorite, I don't like recoil, so the 7mm-08 may be the best for me. It's amazing how devastating the .243 is on mule deer. Its amazing how devastating any of the 4 listed is on mule deer.
-
I have three Browning BAR 270's and one BAR 300 mag. Seems to me that I am usually reaching for the 300.
-
It doesn't matter what cartridge I choose. I never bring one home.

I shot my spike elk at 500 on the dot with that combo last year

Whatever I’m carrying! Probably used a dozen different calibers over the years.
-
26 Nosler, 270 Win. Mag., or 7mm. Rem Mag.

6.5x284

Not trying to be a smart ass, I have never hunted MD (only killed WT and BT). Does it really matter?
-
Not trying to be a smart ass, I have never hunted MD (only killed WT and BT). Does it really matter?
Nope! Carry what you are most confident in and that you shoot the best. Deer aren’t that hard to kill if you do your part and put the bullet where it needs go.
-
Choosing between calibers is like choosing between blondes. brunettes, and redheads. Whichever is in my hands at the moment is my favorite. :chuckle:
-
I shoot the same gun for everything, that way there is no forgetting the ballistics. My .300 Weatherby has been in my hands every year since 1982, lots of Mule Deer, Blacktails, Whitetail and Elk have hit the dirt from this gun.
-
257 Roberts
-
Sako 25-06 rem with 117 grain soft points
I have other deer rifles but this is my go to.
-
Something light weight and pack a .22 because in this state you know your chances of getting a buck are slim so you might as well pick up a grouse or rabbit while out there,
-
7mm Rem Mag with 162 grain Hornady BTSP. It does everything well and isn't real bad on meat damage.
-
My favorite is a 100 gr. Shuttle T-lock.
-
264 Win mag and factory Remington ammo just seems to work.
-
270
-
Remington 30-06 165 grain Springfield core-lokt
-
243, 300 win mag, 30-06. Just whatever I feel like for the day lol.
-
270-270WSM-7mag
-
Been using a 7mag, taking a 6.8 western this year.
-
280AI mainly, every now and then a 6.5-06AI or .270 win. They all do the job just as well.
-
7RUM or 6.5x.284
-
25-06 120 gr. Speer Grand Slams

Currently a 6.5 Creed Tikka T3x Lite Stainless chopped and threaded 5/8-24 to 18" for a dead air nomad TI. Factory Hornady 143 ELD-X rounds and looking through a Maven RS1.2 mounted with UM Tikka rings.
.223 clone is in progress but with 1/2-28 threads shooting black hills 77gr TMK's. Looking for a 5.56 specific suppressor for that setup...then it will be used wherever it's legal.

This is a hugely important question. The consequences of your choice is absolutely going to determine the success of your hunt.
When I was a boy, the 30-30 was it. Back then, people thought it could kill a deer. The naivete of people back the was stunning.
But shortly we learned that the 30-06 was the only real way to go. For years people mistakenly believed that the 30-06 was the go-to deer round.
Thankfully, Jack O'Conner came on the scene and it was settled once and for all*: The 270 Winchester was the ultimate deer round.
I remember the day I brought my Winchester Model 70 in .270 home from the pawn shop. I knew I had the only deer rifle I'd ever need. I was 16.
And so it was. The 270 remained the ultimate deer round.
Until my older brother came home with a 7MM Remington Magnum.
I was suddenly horribly undergunned for mule deer with my anemic 270.
I scraped and scraped money together and got my hands on a BAR in 7MM Remington Magnum.
Not only was it a 7MM, it was Semiautomatic, making it impossible for a buck to escape. I could pull the trigger 4 times in almost no time.
I remember the 308 going through a popularity boom, but I knew it was a fad and that the 308 would never be a good mule deer caliber, so I stayed pat. The 7MM remained king.
Until one day I read about the absolutely magical 7MM-08.
There was no way I could hunt with that old outdated 7MM Mag. Using such an inefficient caliber on deer was suddenly downright unethical according to all of the magazine articles.
Finally we had arrived at the perfect efficient deer caliber. The universe was in balance.
And it remained in balance.
That universal balance lasted about 2 years, when I learned about and researched the 6.5 Creedmoor.
We all know that Mule deer live in open country, and the 6.5 Creedmoor was designed and purpose built to shoot those super high BC 6.5 bullets that kill deer just by zinging by.
What could I do?
I immediately began growing out my hair and buying scrunchies for my man bun, sacked up, and started shooting my 6.5 Creedmoor while looking down on other people.
Good times.
I knew I'd finally settled on the Creedmoor for good.
And it was for good, until the 6.5 PRC came along.
3,200 fps from a short action? Are you kidding me?!?!?!?
Do you have any idea how cumbersome a long action rifle is? There's practically no way you can wield one of those things on a deer hunt.
The physics don't lie. The 6.5 PRC is THE perfect mule deer round.
Unless you consider the 28 Nosler.
Sorry, but the 6.5 PRC just can't compete with the case size of the mighty Nosler. Efficiency is a metric used by the weak.
That's the kind of power that is required to cleanly kill a Mule Deer!
So, the only right answer is the 280 Nosler.
* Some perfect calibers were omitted, due to space limitations.
* In truth, I've shot the 7MM Remington Magnum at deer for the last 45 years.
*

7mm Rem Mag loaded with Nosler 168gr Accubond Long Range. I use it for everything and it is deadly!

Last few years and years to come I’ll continue to shoot my 300prc with 215 Berger’s.

Boys and their toys!?!
I have to ask, there seems to be very little love for the 25-06 on this forum. Am I under gunned? Do I need to go out and get me something with a little more umph? Is the 25-06 already so outdated that it's considered retro and weak? I mean, every deer I've shot hit the ground within a few feet of where it was standing when hit. Most had very little blood shot, except the one I hit on the shoulder. That one was ugly, but not as ugly as that time I was present when a buddy shot a Mulie 3 point with a 300 WinMag, holy smokes, I asked him if he wanted me to just go grab the meat grinder now?
The 25-06 has done everything I've asked of it. Blacktail, Whitetail, Mulies, Antelope, Caribou, a few Grouse and a Coyote or two. You can load with bullets from 75 to 120 grain bullets that are getting out there at 2800 to 3200 feet per second. It's the perfect deer gun from 25 to 400 yrds and honestly, just a joy to shoot. I don't know what more you can you ask for?
It started out as my grandfather's Springfield 1903 30-06. Since I already had my father's Springfield 1903 30-06, no one needs two identical rifles, right? With a new barrel, new composite stock, nice Vortex scope, it's been my deer getter since 1992. I'm not sure how it would feel heading up the hill without it. Probably feel like I was forgetting something.
Anyways, just felt like the 25-06 needed a little PR in this sea of 6.5MM, 7MM, 8MM and 30 caliber lovefest.
-
25-06 is fine, I have one. It's just been lost in the "newer is better" marketing hype. The outdoor industry can't survive on letting people think all you need is the gun you got.
-
Though very capable to a degree the 25 cal has been largely forgotten and even dismissed because they lacked heavier high BC bullets but with Berger and Hornady finally stepping up and making some mid 130gr 25cals with G1 BC's of .650 they have become legitimate long range shooters. A 25-06 w/134 ELD-M vs 6.5 PRC w/147 ELD-M have nearly identical ballistics except the 25-06 does it with less recoil.
I think if Hornady were to ever do a 25 Creedmoor or 25 PRC and they got someone like Tikka to get on board along with them you'd see a pretty significant increase in interest for the 25 caliber.
-
BB gun in ear, while it's flopping, find yourself a rock or stick to the back of the head. 😂🤣😂🤣. JUST JOKING.
Whatever caliber that's in the truck.
-
30-30 because I'm stylish.

Has anyone shot a deer and felt they needed more gun?
-
Has anyone shot a deer and felt they needed more gun?
Yes
But it is a 25/223 caliber .
Pretty much a 25 caliber bullet ,jammed into a 223 case.
Muzzle velocity right around 2850,with an 87 -100 grain bullet.
If you throat shoot em ,it's perfect. Less than 100 yards, works pretty well.
-
I've done the 303 Brit, 30-06, 243 and 308. I settled on the 6.5X55 Sweed since I don't sport a man bun. :chuckle: It's been getting the job done since the late 1800's.
-
Tough call. Today I will say .280 rem. That being said, I will be carrying my .300 Weatherby this season. Depends on the country.
-
Win .270 every year since my dad gifted me the rifle as high school graduation present. One shot. One deer. Anything under 400 I’m very confident and I’m slinging 150g bullets out of it. Most factory deer stuff is 130 or less it seems these days but I like a little extra when it lands.

308 Winchester out of a Ruger American usually shooting terminal ascent. It's the sweet spot of power, recoil, cost and availability.
-
I used to use a .257 Roberts, but for the last 20 years I have just used a .270. Never had to put a second shot into one. I can also find the ammo at just about every store that sells ammo.
-
From Alabama to Alaska I've shot every big game animal with my Rem 7mm mag if gun hunting. Made in 1967 and given to me from my grandfather
-
I think the one rifle I'd like to build and use before I hang them all up is a 25-40. If I didn't already have 128 projects in process, 162 on the shelf and a wife, I'd have already started pestering my gunsmith about a barrel, begun working up loads and purchasing all of the rest of the parts needed to build the second best deer rifle ever.
-
lately i’m liking a 6.5 grendel for deer and bear.
it’s just a pleasure to carry and shoot.
-
280AI with a 145 LRX
If I start hunting areas without the potential for 400+ yard shots I'll use a 7mm-08 with a 139 LRX.
-
270wsm
-
6.5x284 140 gr berger hvld going 2940 ,but this year I might carry a 6.5 creed that we
ighs 3 lbs less cuz I'm old and the 127 gr barnes lrx are around 2840
-
06' either 25 or 30
-
7mm Rem Mag

.300 wsm with 180 gr. Accubonds at 2950 fps. Very minimal meat loss and farthest out of the 4 deer so far with it went about 10 yards. Suppressor coming next.

7MM Rem Mag for everything. Shot my grandpas old Model 70 chambered in that for years, that rifle has taken moose and caribou in Alaska and a number of elk (him), and mule deer, whitetail, black bear, pronghorn, bighorn, and one elk by me. After that elk in 2021 I hung it up and decided to buy a new rifle. After researching a ton looking for a new caliber I settled right back onto the 7mm with a new Tikka and better optics. Two deer last two years, two shots.
I’m liking the Federal Premium trophy copper in 150 grain.
-
270. Every once in a while my self, my son or brother will use the old 721’s that grandma and grandpa bought at Yeagers back in the early 60’s (both pre 64’s), beautiful rifles. Hundreds of game animals from Washington to Oregon to BC to Montana to Idaho and to Alaska. Mule deer, whitetail, black bear, cougar, caribou, moose and yotes. Those two rifles have dropped a lot of game animals and varmints. Both rifles have over 60 years of service, still are tack drivers and look new. We’ve been offered a lot of money for them as a pair and as one offs, nope! Never👍😆 As said, on a nice, bluebird day, they are on someone in the family’s shoulder from time to time, they have been in every hunting camp since they were purchased, whether it be a grandson, a granddaughter , a great grandson or great granddaughter or now, a great great grandson. A lot of the old pictures I posted years ago had one of these two rifles in it.

As this thread has shown any gun can kill a deer.
Mine is a Remington 760 Gamemaster 30-06. Stainless camo synthetic stock. Been around the block that most of the camo is worn off the stock and yes stainless can rust when you carry/use it enough in harsh conditions for as long as I have. Topped with a 3.5 x 14 Nicon Buckmaster scope and an 24" old school Harris bipod.
Shooting factory Remington 165 grain pointed soft point. All I have needed for countless deer and elk, a moose and goat, and throw in random bears and cats. Add the abuse of years of harsh conditions it is still a tack driver. Give me a solid rest where I can get my quad focal glasses to align with the scope optics. BOOm done. Happens more that some would guess??
-
REM 22-250 to a 300 WM. Whatever you have and shoot we’ll 👍🏻
-
Rifle - .270 Win for everything these days although I have taken several deer with 7mm-08
Muzzy - .50 cal 340 grain Hornady Bore Driver
-
This year will be 270 win for me .
-
This year I plan on taking out either a pre 64' winchester 88 in .308 or a pre 64 model 70 in.270! Have not decided which one! Love both of them!
-
Been using my trusty 270 for the last 25 years with no complaints. I am not into long range or grizzly hunts, so this is gun that I will have until i hang it up someday
-
.270 for the win, no pun in intended!
-
3/4 pickup, full tank of gas, full load of wood. Going down a mountain with no brakes.
Lol 😂
Just joking.
-
I have used many calibers to hunt mule deer through the years, but currently carry a 270wsm with 140 grain hornady handloads because it is very accurate.
-
7.62 x 39mm
-
My favorite caliber has changed over the years. I’m more successful when I’m hunting multiple species with the same rifle. They all (pretty much) do the same thing. I love .300 Win Mag for everything larger than coyotes. With modern scopes and infinite choices in bullets you can choose almost anything bigger than a .243 Win for almost anything smaller than grizzly. Nothing is more important than shooting well. No caliber can compensate for poor shooting.
-
Last few years and years to come I’ll continue to shoot my 300prc with 215 Berger’s.
This for deer, and elk in a pinch.
-
When I was a kid there was a sporting goods store called BB&M's, it's where the cool kids hung out and debated the latest aluminum baseball bat. We never went in that store: It was too expensive, and everybody knows a Louisville Slugger is good enough for the job.
This thread reminded me of that store.

I’ve shot them with anything from a .223 to a 45-70 and everything in between. This year, I am using a 6 ARC.

My last muleys fell to 28 Nosler, .308win, 300wm, 25.06, and 257wby. I usually just grab the gun that I'm "feeling" that day. Next one will likely be 7PRC.

Some fun replies on here.
The last one was with a 6000lb projectile with a front hitch set up. No noticeable damage on said vehicle.
As far as firearms, 30-30, 25-06 which I still regret selling, 30-06, 7X57, 44 Mag and a custom 45/70 with 350gn SPRN.
One that I am tempted to use is my .256 Win Mag Contender.
It is interesting to me the number of the ‘newer’ calibers that are used here.
I have reloaded since the 70’s and have compared ballistics on nearly all cartridges at one point or another it seems.
I always get a kick out of the latest ‘magical’ cartridge shooting the same bullet at the same speed as an older one, but somehow the newest addition shoots flatter, further and harder even with the same speed and same bullet. Well, until reality and physics get in the way, that is.
Now the .17/25 ACP I made……..

I’ve got multiple, but sold on 6.5PRC for a bit now. Did the job on deer and elk this yr - all dropped straight down where they were standing 280 yrds - 320 yrds

Went through this quickly but don’t tell me I’m the only one that shoots a 7wsm???thanks to JJhunter, I’d like a 280 AI though!
168 Berger’s BTW

they are a rarity anymore. Do you reload? Factory is impossible and extremely expensive! I’ve got a model 70 stainless with 9 boxes of factory that I’m actually thinking of offloading to find another project. The ammo is almost worth the price of the gun!

270 Win Tikka T3 Hunter when it’s dry and 7mm-08 Tikka plastic when wet. Knocks them right down.
Always wanted a 25-06.

It's always been an arrow in reality, but if I had a dream situation and any gun it would probably be 25 caliber. I prefer 25-06 because I am familiar with it. But I could be persuaded to many other options available on the market.

Few years back I shot the heads off 9 straight grouse with my 300 wm out to 45 yards. With 215 bergers its solid on elk to 1000 yds. From grouse to elk it gets the job done.

you're definitely the only one :chuckle:
Seriously though, the 7wsm is truly a travesty as it's a phenomenal chambering. If only someone like Hornady would have developed it there would have been the support behind it to make it. With an 8tw, a case full of n565, and a 180gr Berger or eldm its a beast.

My mule deer caliber is .308 my daughter’s is .264
Poor wording on the question or poor wording on the answers?
