Title: Elk hunters save your capes PLEASE!
Post by: bucklucky on June 15, 2009, 09:02:18 PM
Charlies Taxidermy NEEDS elk capes. I will do horn mount trades or credit and possibly cash. If you kill a bull and are not doing anything with it save the cape, cut it long and dont cut the throat.

Here is a link of how the bull needs to be skinned for a good cape. You can also just tube the legs out so you dont cut the armpitts.

Thanks in advance and keep me in mind!!

By the way, I need good 3 year old (rag 4s or 5s) or bigger. No Cow elk capes or spikes, thanks!

Thanks, Charlie (Charlies Taxidermy)

Seeing as to how I'm such a pro at elk hunting, I can guaranty you a 100% possibility of 1 or 2 elk hides. :yike:
OK truth is I haven't even seen an elk the last three seasons and I've been out for the full season everyday.

I typically take 4 or 5 bulls per year across the west so I'd be happy to save...uh... :bs:

What do you need to do to keep the capes fresh if one can't be taken out right away, say for 4 or 5 days?

If posible keeep it cool and open to let the skull cool off. Ice would help or snow but that long it will be iffy if the cape would make it or not. Best thing is to freeze of course  ;) If you are by a stream a good place to put it would be in the water, submerged over the head and hide, that will keep it the coolest and might have a chance of making it for 4 or 5 days.

If people don't like a taxidermist's product and take their finished mount to another taxi, then it IS crappy work in their eyes.

Think Highly of myself, NO,  just re-doing crappy mounts that have been screwed up. Do you have a problem with that?? Did you here me say Im the best around ?? I do descent work buddy and its customers bringing me there mounts that basically suck and want me to re-do them, thats what most of the capes go on. Do I need to post some pictures??
Oh and I did not say ALL OTHERS WORK, just the CRAPPY work. There is a few real good Taxis In washington and I hope to be one of them some day. For now Im just average in my eyes.

Re-doing crappy mounts that have been screwed up?? I looked at your website says you have been doing this for ten plus years, that is called experience I am sure that when you first got into business you probably did some crappy work? So if I bring you a rocky mountain sheep to have done, how well can you do it? I see no pictures on your website of it?? In my mind someone that has done a ton of sheep may find your work crappy??? I am not starting a feud here, I think it is very egotistical for you to make a statement like that. I seen that there are other taxidermists on this site, I wonder how they feel??? But someone that has an opinion like yours will never get the true meaning of this statement so it is a mute subject.   So why don’t you list the FEW good taxidermists in Washington state, so we all know that only them and of course yourself are the ones we should take our trophies to.. Thank you and have a very nice day…

Egotistical...Dude come on. When customers bring a mount in they say is crappy, then it is crappy. I am not egotistical. Come on dude, . By the way, I have not gotten an oportunity to mount a Sheep. Would you like to see firsts, look back in the Taxidermy section and you will see pictures of my very first Cougar, mountain goat, Caribou, and I can post a picture of my first deer and elk too if you like. If you want to call me out be a man and call me out, Im not afraid to show pics of my first animals . How bout first Steelhead reproduction? Thats on here too. I have not down graded anyones work on this site by that little statement. They all do good work , and for some that have just started are doing well. See , you seem to think I am egotistical, but what you fail to see is that I have helped alot  of people (Taxidermists) with techniques and have invited them over to my shop.  If I was egotistic, I would not do this. I know a bunch of do-it yourselfers that come in too, and have helped out a few with my ways of doing things. Man, I am an artist and see things differently than others, I know what a great mount looks like. A great mount and Taxidermist can do work that can not be destinguished from the real thing. That is tough to do and there arent many that can do it well. I cant even come close, now is that egotistical?

I am not starting a feud here

It comes across that way though.  Charlie is extremely humble and extremely talented.  His statement was about as neutral as I could see it posted.  Generally people don't shell out that much cash unless they are fixing crappy work.   Not sure how the sheep came up.  H enever said anything about a sheep.  Though for certain I'd look at Charlie for deer and for Cougar even, and most certainly bear.  He does however have an incredible knack for elk. :twocents:

Now, someone bring him some capes so I don't have to listen to him whine anymore. :)

I have been watching this thread unfold and was debating on whether to say something or not. I have to agree that Charlie maybe made a mistake in his choice of words to some people, but he did not offend me, because I am not one of those Crappy Taxidermists he was talking about  :tung: :P  but his work backs it up. Charlie does an excellent job on all his mounts he makes them come back to life and that is what you are supposed to be able to re-create.

I have gone to Charlie's own business and called him on the phone to ask for his opinion, and not once has he turned me away or gave me anything other than a honest answer and for that it is always appriciated.

Egotistical I do not thinnk he is, as for crappy taxidermists there are truly a lot of them out there, it is a shame that some people do not realize what a mount should look like until they actually see one. Any one can slap a cape onto a form with a little bit of elmers glue and call it a mount. But when you can set the antlers, do the correct ear butts, have the definition in the eyes, make sure the tear ducts are correctly in place, the nose and the nostrils are anatomically correct and the mouth is lined up with the hair patterns then that is work of art and not a mount.

God, not another *censored* with only a few posts under his belt causing trouble. Livtohutn, if you have nothing productive to say, get the f- off of here or just shut the hell up!  Charlie is one of the best Taxidermists in Washington and far from being an ego maniac.
Charlie, I could have gotten you a bunch of capes that are hanging in the carports on the Skok Rez right now.  They might be full of holes though.

Damn Charlie!  Why do you have to always go pissing off the newbies that don't know what their talking about?

Charlie did not mean that the way it sounded.  More than likely didn't come out the way he ment.  He was telling the truth.  We use capes for all sorts of thing.

*Mounting Sheds that people have found.
*Replacing capes that hunters or guides  have messed up beyond repair.
*Remounting old mounts.
*Yes, remounting other taxidermists work.   Crappy or not if the customer doesn't like it and wants it remounted that that is what they are also used for.

People need to remember that no matter how good a taxidermist is every hunter has their personal expectations of what a mount should look like.  Just like each taxidermist has their interpretation of what an animal looks like.  Even when using  live referance photos.

As far a Charlies ego goes. . . . You really don't know what you are talking about!

WOW, it just amazes me how someone can read a written post without even meeting the person that wrote it and not even knowing anything about that person, and draw a conclusion like that!

livtohuntn, since you were so concerned about the statement Charlie made you could have just PM'd him.  I think you would have found out what type of a class act he really is, just like Michelle, Joe, Elkstuffer and all the other Taxidermist on here that share their skill and knowledge with anyone on this site that ask's for it.  John

I see nothing wrong with what Charlie said, there are a lot of crappy taxidermists, and there are a few good to excellent ones (just like any business). When you find one you like stick with him/her.  I have a mule deer mount that I had done in Wyoming...it's crappy.  I am going to have it re done by Sylvester Taxidermy some day.  Why have something on the wall that makes you mad every time you look at it?

Charlie is going to re-mount my hunting partners bull from 07. It was completely f&*ked up from the other taxi. He hunted 40 years to kill a bull like that and feels sick every time he looks at it on the wall. There are allot of crappy taxis out there. I feel 100% confident in Charlies abilities and recommend him to anyone who asks my  :twocents:. I hope to be helping pay his rent for a long time. :P :P The only bad thing I can say about Charlie is HE SHOUTS A MATHEWS!! :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL:  Go team Bowtech  :IBCOOL: ;)

livtohutn you are way off base here I for one met Charlie at the sportsman show a couple of years ago because of this site. He invited everyone to stop by and just say hi ... he didn't try and sell me he just wanted to BS and talk hunting and when I saw his work I fired my taxi in Montana and vowed my stuff would all go to Charlie from then on and that was based not only on the excellent work he does but also on the type of person he is. I for one have had a mount redone because it was crappy!!! Damn newbies causing trouble again anyway  :dunno: can you just contribute to the site in a positive way for awhile and learn about the members before you start bashing them!!!  >:(
