Well some how I managed to draw one of the Manson Sheep tags, only the 2nd tag I’ve ever drawn for anything in 24 years. I absolutely still can’t believe it and looking to enjoy everything about it from the scouting, to the actual hunt and to the pack out. Looking forward to sharing this experience with family and friends. Anybody have any recommendations on a taxidermist for a bighorn? I know it’s not going to be cheap, probably just looking for a shoulder mount as our house isn’t that big. Feel free to reach out if any suggestions or anybody wants to chat about this hunt.

Hit up Teejay at trapline taxidermy in cle elum. He will get you squared away. Congrats on the draw!

I second four point, he did my sheep. Look at using a boat charter to hunt from

Congratulations on the draw. I wish you the best of luck. Dan also did my sheep. He is a true artist. My suggestion for the hunt is enjoy the scouting. It turned out to be 95% of my experience. I had planned for 10 days to hunt and it turned out I was done 2 hrs after daylight on the first morning. It’s is incredibly fun to be in sheep country looking over these critters. Enjoy every second of it.

My buddy has a boat we plan on bringing over, we hunt the area for mule deer and bear, so we are pretty familiar with the area. Going to be fun actually sheep hunting instead of always playing the what would you shoot game if you had the tag game? Question for you guys that have had this hunt or are familiar with the area. How much more sheep do you see from the boat, or does it just depend on the day and weather? Sometimes we’ve seen 25+ sheep from grade creek rd and others we’ve seen only a handful in a day.

Congrats on your sheep tag. I put in for that unit every year. Look forward to your adventure

Thanks for all the replies so far, anybody know what’s a big ram for the unit? 160”, 170”? I’ve been reading a few articles on how to field judge them and have learned quite a bit on what to look for. Here’s one I got a pic of 3 years ago thru my spotting scope. I’m thinking he’s my baseline.
-
Sorry don’t know why they are sideways. Thoughts on this ram?
-
The Lady of the Lake or the barge goes by every other day. But a 3 year old picture the Ram is probably dead

This is the only person I would be taking a sheep to.

Never hunted the Mason, but have talked with several past tag holders. IMO, that's a solid ram for that unit. For some reason, the last few years hunters are harvesting younger rams in the 5 year range. If it was me, I would need my buddy to be holding my shells because i would cap off on that bad boy

It’s funny you say that, cause my buddy and I were just talking about that over the weekend. I told him I need someone to hold my gun until we see the one! If I see one like him, it will be hard to pass up but I will be completely happy. I’m going to set his size as my baseline. Hopefully not being to greedy?
-
If that’s the case with the last few being around that 5 year age mark, maybe there are still some ol’ boys wandering around the hillsides and canyons!
-
163-164" is realistic for Manson. Always a chance of something a little bigger showing up during the rut.
Good luck on your hunt!

Thanks for the response, looking forward to it! Hopefully I’ll be able to do a little scouting from the lake here in the next month or two and see if I can build a hit list! Few people I talked to said there’s always seems to be a few bigger older rams a little farther up the lake that hang out in the timber that might show themselves during the rut.
-
Big steep canyons. They could be anywhere.
Good Luck
-
Heading out tomorrow night to be there by daylight. Get a day of scouting in, than hit it saturday morning. Should be a blast!
-
Good luck, take lots of pictures, have an amazing hunt and find a brute!
-
Good luck, maybe you will find a bruiser muley up there too!
-
Pretty special hunt you have
-
From what I hear, 170’s are possible, but most kill rams in the 160’s.

So, how'd it go?

Tried to upload the story with more pics but my screen just turns white on my phone.

Was hoping for 160+ going into it but couldn’t be more happy with the one I got. He was really wide, had 15” bases and was 9 years old. His growth rings really stand out which we thought made him unique. According to the biologist, there’s supposed to be 2 full curls in the herd but there’s a lot of land in the Manson unit for them to hide. Now just have to wait the year and a half to get him back from the taxidermist.

Yeah, we scouted from the road the day before with no luck. So tried the boat in the afternoon and found a group of 30. Opening day we figured the boat was our best bet, definitely a neat experience hunting sheep from a boat!

Awesome! what a great ram
