Up around Sullivan lake area this weekend with my daughter for a hike in salmo-priest wilderness. Came across this guy eating grass. Barely got the one picture before he darted off. My first impression from color and shape, was definitely a young griz. But I haven't spent much time looking at bears to be honest. Would like to get some confirmation before we go telling everyone we saw a griz. Haha. Stay safe out there.

Color really means nothing in the bear world, so I don't use that to determine.
To me, the ears and head shape say black bear.
-
I'm far far from a bear expert so I'll defer to the folks on here that know more than me but if I had to vote I'd check the black bear box for all the same reasons 92xj mentioned.

Looks like a black bear to me.
-
Yeah ears are a little big for grizzly... When it turned sideways I really thought griz. Seemed larger than a black bear but it was kinda skinny, which made me think young griz. Plus the color and the fact it was in a known grizzly area I had my self convinced.
Probably a good time to go take some of those bear identification tests.

Looks like a pumpkin headed blackie to me. Nose contour / shape doesn’t appear to be consistent with a grizz.
You would know for sure when it turned its head. Did you see any tracks?? Tracks and claw length is another good way to tell.

Looks like a blackie to me…

Black bear.
-
Thanks for the confirmation, not a griz! I have some homework to do...
Cool bear though! First good look at a bear my daughter's ever had and one of my better looks as well.

Black bear
-
It's a brown bear ( :chuckle:) but Ursa Americanus variety.
-
I’d shoot it.

Black bear
-
Definetly a color phase black bear
-
Really nice black bear 🤙🏼
-
That’s a black bear.
-
Color phase black bear, nice one too. Our neighbor said he seen a grizzly in our neighborhood and I seen it several times and it was a portly shaped red colored black bear.
-
Black bear. Not seeing the flatter dished face of a griz and the ears are not right. Im seeing a dang nice black bear.
AND exactly where is this so I can go shoot it on opening day?
-
The "dog" might be a wolf. They collar them with black collars in Washington.
-
BIG BLACK BEAR
-
:chuckle:
-
Rounded ears really look like a black bear to me.
-
I am with the rest - looks like a nice pumpkin head black bear to me. Too bad you didn't get a side profile of the face but from that picture, 100% black bear
-
This is why there is a bear ID test. You should send in your pic for them to use.
-
Cool bear though!
:yeah:
-
It's a good reminder to take the test as well.
I need to do that.
-
100% black bear vote - Yeah I agree. it was a cool bear. super glad my 11 yo daughter got to see it with me!
when it turned sideways for whatever reason I got the impression it was a young grizzly. I should have recorded it instead of taking a pic because I would have got the side shot. The color and location (far NE corner) just had me convinced. after coming back to the pic though its pretty obvious with the ears - I think I got a little over excited and had myself convinced. haha.
thanks for the feedback!
