Title: E-scouting
Post by: riggiesmalls on July 01, 2024, 04:24:06 PM
I'm from the East Coast, and very new to looking for berries as a food source. Besides big red patches on hillside, what do you guys look for when going through aerial imaging to say one place is gonna hold berries versus another? Just trying to make the most of my scouting time.

What are you targeting? Assuming bear, it’s really just boots on ground. It’s not usually difficult to find a source, just timing the ripe berries at the right elevation.

Yep! I hunted black bear last year for the first time but couldn’t go until October when everything was pretty much all burnt out.

October is a great time to find them in and around orchards and old cuts where they are looking for hives and grubs.  Elderberries usually hold out till October as well depending on your area.

Just look through hiking reports, there are lots of well known berry patches. Find them on maps and look for similar terrain/slope and look in those areas for the special pockets. I like to drive the road systems when apples are flowering and make not of where they are located, then check them in fall.

No Bait Just Bears, book is really good tactics to use in Washington and really anywhere. But, the author hunts Washington.

That’s a great idea - thanks!
