Too hot for hunting.

Bears still gotta eat and drink. My bro got one today at 3 when it was almost 100 out. Not a big one but he’s got a second tag for that
-
Sweet, congrats!
-
Too hot for hunting.
I have had my best success on the hottest days. If someone really really wanted to kill a bear I would recommend hunting the hottest day of the week.
My season starts today after work. Missed the best day of the week yesterday when it was 100 lol.

We actually saw a bear yesterday at around 1300 in the heat of the day. I was amazed.

any big changes how to hunt bears in the high heat?
-
Did some scouting, but waiting for cooler weather. Some of the places I hunt would take too long to get a bear out without it getting way too hot.

The last 2 hours of the day are the best regardless of the temps. If you kill a bear at that time you will be doing your work during the coolest part of the day (after dark).
I have killed a few morning bears but it’s not my favorite time to hunt. I always had a couple West facing slopes for the morning as they were the last to get the sun and the opposite in the evening as those slopes were the first to get the shade.
Now that I live in ID I do all of my bear hunting in the spring😂.

Filled tag #1 of 2024 with this little boar yesterday at 10:23am. 256 yard double-lung shot from my Browning X-Bolt Stalker Long Range 30-06 put him down. This is my 8th Black Bear harvested in my hunting career. Dropped off meat at butcher for Jalapeno and Pepperjack sticks. Time to get a 2nd tag and look for a GIANT. Good luck to everyone as always!
-
Congrats and good luck on tag #2!

That is a chunky bear D rock, it's been eating pretty well. Hopefully you got some nice fat off of it! The one I helped clean on the opener barely had a pound of fat.

Congrats to those successful so far! Nice bear D-rock and good seeing you last weekend. What time a day you take this one?
Got eyes on one yesterday evening but couldn't do much about it. Getting out in the AM so hopefully, have something significant to add to the thread...

Great bears everyone!
Pathfinder, I feel like we have watched your son grow up on this site. Its pretty cool to see that through lens of your hunts. Thanks for sharing!
-
Thanks for the comments everyone. Long story short; we've been hunting this bear for 4 years. First started getting him on our trail cams in 2020 and named him Victor for the large distinctive V on his chest. Never seen him alive until last week when he popped out in this old clearcut right before dark. Didn't realize how big he was until he was gutted and we tried to move him. Like I said, I'll try to get the whole story up this week.

Was thinking the same things as I looked at the picture, definitely a young man and not a boy anymore.

Little Pathfinder's growing up! But he looks too serious. I love to see that boy's electric smile with his success pics every year!

Cool bear! Love that white patch! Are you gonna do a mount? With a white patch like that, I'd hate to split it up the middle for a rug, and separate that pattern.
-
That’s an awesome bear! Well done! That kids trophy collection is no joke!!
-

Well, the problem is that his room is starting to look like the Grim Reaper of bears lives there. We had his first bear made into a rug because it was his first, and it had a beautiful white chest as well. Then last year he killed a big blonde boar and it looked like they were going to end the August season here, so I figured "probably the biggest one he'll kill. I guess I'll have a rug made." I killed a big boar two years ago that I had rugged. I called the taxidermist the day after he killed it and asked if it was too late to put a stop order on the blonde rug and switch it out for this guy, but he said it's already getting the felt sewed on.
So, as big and beautiful as it is, I'm just not going to rug a fourth bear, and a half mount is nearly 2K. Ill keep the hide in the freezer and sleep on it, but I think we'll just get it tanned and he can hang it off his door with his others...

Those white chest blazes really reminded me of the Asian black bear, closely related to our American black bears. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asian_black_bear
I've never seen a blaze quite like that on an American black bear!

Yes, bears LOVE the purple berries Dana. Not thinking those are huckleberries sir, were u above 4K? That’s kind of the line for hucks.

Red Hucks. I would figure bears would eat them. I was just reading about grizzlies loving the blue variety.

Red hucks? Didn’t know that, thanks for the course correction gentlemen. I stand corrected Dana and CT.

Red Huckleberries exist on the wet side from sea level on up. I got them in my yard at a little over 300 feet in elavation.
-
The wife put a good one down last week during the lightning storm. Man was it raining hard getting it out. 190# gutted est around 220 total
-
Then I finally got a chance yesterday on a really nice bear. This bear had a solid layer of fat and good size. 253# gutted estimated around 290# total. Perfect bear. They get a little To hard to move around when they get bigger then this.
-
This is what we really get excited about. As much as we love our bear burger, our favorite meat. Having a healthy supply of good cooking oil is just as valuable.

The bears have not touched the red hucks in the areas I have been hunting. It could be because they prefer a different berry? Lots of cascara and black berries seem to be their targeted food source. I also noticed they never touch the mountain ash either on the wet side but get east and they eat them up??

After all the other berries are gone they eat the mountain ash berries.😉

I've seen bear scat full of mountain ash in the height of the blueberry crop. Someone should create a tv show, 'bears do the darndest things'

Shot this fat sow on labor day. Shot her at 30' when she stood up out of the buckbrush. Shot her while she was standing on her hind feet. Lots of fat on her. (No cubs, dry sow, not producing milk). Got her hanging in the newly minted walk in cooler. Time to make breakfast sausage and lard.

One of the fattest bears I have killed was a sow between birthing years. They must really stock up to survive childbirth in winter. Bear was maybe 5.5’ but easily 300# with the 4” of fat.

There was some really small scat nearby, so I’m thinking it’s a sow with cubs. Still would love to put eyes on it!

Thank you all!
That was my second bear ever in life. I'm thinking about getting a second bear tag just in case an opportunity presents its self.
That bear was shot with a .308 Accubond Trophy Grade and I was very glad to hit it right in the heart off hand at 70yds.
My 2023 bear was hit in the heart with a 300WM Accubond handload from 60yds. Both died in place. I'm not usually that good of a shot when it's go time. When aiming I had a quick thought back to Bearpaw posting about bears needing a solid vital hit to go down quick. Again, I'm very glad I hit him right where it needed to be.
I never heard such a death moan before and would have liked to record that moment.

Here is my 2024 contribution. Calling this the 50 mile bear because it was more about miles put in this time instead of just hours. The most interesting thing about this season for me on the west side was the berry crop. I was in a pretty extensive amount of real estate where the berries were virtually non-existent, while other large chunks of land had the best I've ever seen and they are still going strong even now. And it didn't seem to be an elevation or exposure difference, but rather just the difference in geography. Note to self; extend the contract with the bees to keep focusing their efforts on my favorite spots.
-
Ended my bear season yesterday evening. Stuck this brute at 20 yards. My heart sunk a little when I stopped him and he turned towards me with his front leg back. Made for a tricky shot and less then ideal angle but 466 gr arrow with magnum slick trick punched through and exited right infront of the hind leg. My second biggest bear weighing 274# gutted. Roughly 320# whole weight. Extremely pleased with our bear oil stash after shooting skinny big bears for years.

It did not touch bone. The shot looks more forward than it really was because its leg was back on the hit.

Was happy to see a bear thread here. I can contribute this year's photo. I have a strong color phase area so it seems through the years I have taken about as many chocolate and cinnamon color bear as I have black. With my upcoming spring hunt, I'm actually looking for a big black bear for a new rug. I have heard there are a lot of color phase bear in SE corner of the state as well though. it may not be easy, but that's my challenge.

In my time there hunting bears, I’ve seen way more colored than straight black. Killed all the color phases in the blues, you will love it. Gonna be tough though if you plan on using your crossbow, long shots there.

No I use that when I have designated funnels for them to travel in. I'll have a rifle just knowing I will have more open spaces.

Hope I can kill a bear! :)

2024 Bear. Rolled myself out of bed sick as a dog told myself I could be home sick in bed or up in the woods Hunting. Happy to spot this bear and connect with a clean shot at 200 yards drop and never moved again.
