Title: Wall Tents
Post by: phildobaggins on August 19, 2024, 08:13:45 AM: Hey folks, curious what the market is like for your typical "wall tent". I had never stayed in a wall tent until last year in Montana hunting mule deer and it was freaking epic. I've either just slept in my truck bed, or was in the mountains in a teepee.

My wife drew an elk tag that is waaaaaay down in the middle of nowhere in SW Idaho and we were down there scouting this weekend and thought to myself... I think this is the year I buy a wall tent.

I am not entirely sure what the differences are, or what I would want to consider during this shopping adventure, so let this be an open discussion about wall tents in general!

Are the frames/pole kits normally not included in wall tents?? I think room for 4-6 would be really nice.

Post by: Mtnwalker on August 19, 2024, 08:40:06 AM: Hard to beat a wall tent with a rippin fire in the stove on a cold snowy night. That's my happy place right there. I'm due for an upgrade too so curious to see the recommendations, not really up to date with the latest and greatest.

My advice

10 x 12 is perfect for two people.
Cook outside or have a separate set up.

Buy too big and you will loose interest sooner, because you
will struggle to set it up yourself. The work doesn’t stop after you get home. You have to have a place to hang and dry it.

Keep it clean and protect you investment.

Two 10x 12 are easier than one big tent and more adaptable.

Stove pipe jacks through the roof, not sides or end.

If you can find a used tent between $500 - 800.00 buy it. White canvas with frame.

Both came with the angles and I bought the poles and cut them to the correct lengths. Also have a wood stove for the larger tent and just use big buddy propane for smaller one. We love them.

I take the 10 oz most the time when I only need one as the weight difference is noticeable.

Post by: follow maggie on August 19, 2024, 09:07:12 AM: I use a Davis tent, 12*14 and I love it. It’s pretty easy to set up by myself. Had it 10 years now & getting close to the 200th night. If you get any of the well known brands- Davis, Montana Canvas, Rainier etc, I’m sure they’re very similar in terms of quality materials & workmanship. I bought mine with he frame angles & Davis sent a cut list for each piece of pole. Use the heavy duty electrical conduit from Lowe’s or Home Depot.

Post by: Mtnwalker on August 19, 2024, 09:18:39 AM: To each their own, I personally would not go too small. Ours is 14x16 and I have never once wished it was smaller, even with 2 people. The wife and I can have it up with a fire burning in about 45 minutes and the extra space makes for a comfortable camp when drying clothes, making food, setting a couple camp chairs around the stove etc. If your wife will be sleeping in it regularly she will really appreciate the space, they like accessories. I also don't wall tent if I'm by myself, so maybe that's the difference. :dunno:

My elk group has retired. Our wall tent (14x16?.....Davis?) would sleep 5 with plenty of room....3 on one side, 2 and the wood burning stove on the other. We bought the inside fittings but cut the metal poles to fit.....which was cheaper than buying them from tent company. We also cut poles and made fittings for a kitchen extension and a campfire shelter.

That package is going up for sale.......PM if interested and I can provide contact info for the guy storing the tent system.
